Today, I spent a few hours trying to aquire Mass Effect. The first game, not the yet-to-be-released Mass Effect 2.

I was unsuccessful. It's almost like Mass Effect have been completely discontinued. All-in-all, it's not an enormous deal. I'm a long-time pirate. I have played Mass Effect already. But I make it a point to buy all of Bioware's games legitimaly. In preperation for Mass Effect 2, I decided that if I started today, I'd be done with Mass Effect before next Thursday (release date in Sweden).

Instead, the game is impossible to find. After visiting several stores, two of them Gamestop stores in the biggest malls in my entire region, ALL of them completely plastered with Mass Effect 2 posters, cut-outs and pre-order-now-or-your-firstborn-will-be-eaten-by-grues leaflets EVERYWHERE, I come to the conclusion that it simply cannot be found.

Why, I ask myself? WHY? There are several years older games, some released just last year, already sold as "classic" or cheaper versions. Why wasn't Mass Effect (1) re-marketed or re-released in anticipation of the long-awaited sequel?

For the record, I blame Electronic Arts. Everything has been going downhill since they took over.

Addendum: Last thread was derailed by trolls and people who didn't read past the title of the thread. Online downloads are utterly useless to begin with, but just to make everyone understand this; If I could get Mass Effect without leaving the comfort of my cozy abode, I would.

Edit: Copy-pasting gets messed up on these boards. Fixed. Also, I'm not a Consoleboy. PC all the way.

Wow way to be an arse about it. Sorry for trying to help I didn't see the last little part about you not wanting it for download which you gave no reason for. Also stating that you were a pirate sickens me so your lucky I was even kind enough to post anything.

Is it possible in Sweden (That's where you're from right?) to try and order the game from a store on the internet, have them mail it to the nearest post office where you go get it and pay cash there.

That way you would get a box like you wanted, and you wouldn't have to pay online or use a credit card. If this is somehow out of guestion then I can't really come up with anything else

PC version was on sale for 5 bucks on steam. You can get Mass Effect GOTY edition in most stores for $10-$20.

So, because I've pirated something, that completely invalidates the fact that I want to pay for it?

Say, if I were to buy something first, and pirate it later, would that be just as a heinous act against the gods? Because functionally, there's no difference.

For fun, you might want to actually post a reason why you have no credit card, bank account, etc. and are unwilling to order a copy online. You know, if you want to make the huge discussion you seem hellbent on having actually worthwhile.



Honestly, I can sympathize with wanting physical copies. I'm the same way, I don't like paying for data either (and I've never pirated software). But dude...just order it. From a store. Get it delivered. Takes a couple of days. Or keep trollin'.

Most stores don't allow 'Postorder'/'Postförskott' anymore, with most of them having shifted over to Credit Cards or 'Faktura', both of which are no option.

However, when you suggested it, I decided to check Webhallen, and they do actually allow it again. A year or so ago, they didn't.

So you've gone from bragging about your game piracy prowess to insulting those that give you absolutely valid adivce?  Is it fun to be so dense and closed minded that you haven't realized that a 2 year old game will NEVER be on the self at a retail store?   I read your post...and the one that got locked an hour ago.  Your agenda is still not clear, but if you seriously WANTED to purchase the game, you have been given no less than half a doze methods to do so.

So after these multiple alternative options are presented, you still persist at being a jerk and trying to tout this absurd ideal that because you can't walk into your local retail store and purchase a 2 year old game, we should all agree that pirating a copy of it is ok and your only logical choice.  And you seriously have the nerve to suggest anyone trying to seriously help you is mentally inept?  How freakin' ironic.

Sure, why not. It's not much of a secret, anyway. I'm just going to go through all of this really quickly, since it's not really related to the thread, nor is most of it relevant to anyone but myself.

Over a year ago now, a guy pour beer over me at a bar, as I follow him outside to ask him what the hell he's doing, he punches me. I naturally punch back. The difference being that me, not thinking, have a glass in my hand. Cue arrest. (Here I want to make something clear - while the guy I punched started bleeding, he took no permanent damage whatsoever and immediatly after punching him I realized that I had punched him with a glass in my hand. My own hand absorbed most of the glass).

Fast foward a year, sentenced to pay money that simply doesn't exist for a crime I refuse to acknowledge. In my mind, he punched me first and the punch he recieved was reflexive and he sustained no permanent injuries. I'll be dead and buried before I apologize and pay money for doing something I'd do again. And again. And again. If that exact situation arises again, I'll do the exact same thing. Punishments should be rehabilitative efforts to show people that they've done something wrong; But in my case, I only reacted naturally.

This in itself is indirectly related to my current situation. They want money I don't have, but they are willing to take the money I do have in the meantime. If I put money in the bank, the bank steals it, gives it to a firm (I don't know the english word for it), that then give it to the douche. To protect my money, I can't have them in the bank. Without a bank, I can't have a credit card.

The problem here was that I couldn't order it. I have managed to find a place where I can order it now, though. So it's all resolved. I'll be back in my Mass Effect shoes come Monday or Tuesday.

I do mind. Otherwise I wouldn't have complained about not being able to find the game. I would've just continued to play a pirated copy. Which would've sucked, because then my collection would never have been complete.

Try asking the people at Gamestop if they can look around and see if there are any stores in the area that have it available. They might even be able to order one for you - after all, you're a customer willing to pay for it, it's in their best interest to get it in your hands and get your money.

And there's no reason to blame EA for it; really, it's starting to become a bit of a cliche to assume that everything Mass Effect related that you don't like is automatically EA's fault. Yes, they didn't re-release the game. In most places, the game is easy enough to find, so there's not much reason to. It seems like you're just unlucky enough to live in a place where the game is rare, for whatever reason.

The worst part is that I thought that it'd be easy. If I ran a store, in anticipation for a sequal, I'd find it natural that the demand for the original game would rise at least a little (especially if it was previously dead), with a few exceptions - some games are basicly just an upgrade of the previous game. But in the case of Mass Effect, there's a continual story.

I'm still hoping for Bioware to one day release a "revised" edition of Mass Effect, incorporating Mass Effect 2 goodness into the original game, for a seamless playing experience when the triology is finally completed.
