I am surprised how many people post about needing realistic armors and weapons . I don`t need them i just want the gear to look good so i guess i am on the fence . Post away if you do or don`t need / want them .

I like a balance between realistic and stylized, but if I was to have to lean more towards one than the other I'd choose realistic because full stylized looks really bloody stupid half the time tbh.

I'd say I'm pretty pleased with what I've seen in Inquisition so far, in this regard.

I balance definitely but if i could have it my own way, id go for realistic all the way. The Witcher does a great job with realistic weapon designs. From the weapons we've seen so far, they dont see as stylized as before which im really happy about

I think there should be the option for both. And since we can customize armor, we may get just that.

To me, it almost without fail does not look good when it is not realistic. I spend too much time wincing and inwardly laughing at oversized weapons with near-impossible to grip hilts or armour that would do a poor job of protecting the wearer to appreciate any coolness it might have.

I also tend to think that realistic designs for both simply look better. I'm just not fond of the way in which either is typically stylised. It looks less serious and much less functional, and that detracts from it looking cool.

I want style.  If it is style with function- great!

I'm really most concerned about how mages are dressed, that seems to be where the design crews dim a bit.  The crazy hats in DAO and the abundance of robes didn't make me feel cool.  The champion armor and some of the others (including the dlc) was nice- not too warrior-y and not a dress.  I felt the same about the rogue gear.

I don't know. This is actually a tough question for me.

I feel like overly stylized armor and weapons gives games more of a JRPG feel. Like I'm about to go into turn-based combat mode with my emo men and busty ladies.

Though I love playing as a mage, and staves aren't exactly "realistic" items no matter how you look at it in the first place sooo.... I would be very happy with crazy, over the top, badass staves.

I feel the same way. The horrible hairstyle options really added to the crazy homeless man look for my male Warden.

Realism, schmealism. Give me ninja stars and a spiked chain I can spin above my head to achieve temporary flight.

well you can have realistic weapons and Armour as long as the fighting style do not follow reality.

Two handed weapons and full plate trumps any other combat style.

IE  IRL,the typical rogue with light Armour and two weapons is at much a disadvantage. Even without Armour a two handed handed sword gives a significant advantage.

so fro teh rogue tow win, he nee to have a large skill delta in his favour, we could say be several level higher and the higher the level of the THW the bigger that delta needs to be.

That being said, the gaming fighting style do can stick to reallity, and balance could be preserved by giving bonus to a particular class.

Im on the realistic side. They do not need to be 100% medieval accurate. Just avoid **** like this in da2.

Weapons I really dont care either way, though I expect magical weapons to be a little more ornate than non-magical weapons.

Armour, it completely depends on the class i'm playing. A warrior needs armour that is 100% function over form. A rogue can get away with being a little more sleek and stylish, and a mage can pretty much wear whatever they like (IMO) so I would like to see a choice of robes and hats that can reflect a chosen personality. I think it is more 'realistic' for mages not to rely on their robes for protection, but rather as an expression of who they are. Sultry, prudish, good or bad :)

Ninja stars and spiked chains are also real, bro. Can't have them in fantasy because it shouldn't emulate reality right? ;)

Well, that's the ridiculous conclusion that you extrapolated from something else I said.

What else was I supposed to draw from your statement? You clearly don't like realism in your fantasy games after all.

Do I want realistic weapons? No.

But there is a certain level of "over the top" I don't want to see them cross. DA2 flirted with that line.

Realism doesn't actually exist in fiction anyway.

But I said that I don't think fantasy stories should try to emulate reality. Which is not the same as saying that there can't be any "realistic" aspects in them ever.

I think you are being willfully misunderstanding.

This game and the whole series is about magic. Realistic gear is awesome but only on the static armor sets we see at museums. The actual combat ones were dreadful. The best looking ones have no practicality (western wise) and are far too heavy for any adventurer to wear on travel.

I'm a huge fan of the medium/armored sets for berserkers. Punctual exaggerations with a vast majority of well fitted, plain armor and magic associated with the exaggerations to justify me being able to carry them.

For the lighter classes i love the assassins creed look, tough bulky leather with a slick stealth look. Nothing like what the actual assassins would wear but its just brilliant

I've always preferred "plausible" over "realistic".

If I can buy that it works visually and within the setting, it's fine. Stuff like the uber-pointy Champion Armor and the Hayder's Razor and all is just silly. If it looks like something out of the mid-90s with all points and angles everywhere, or has pauldrons that would make a 40k Space Marine jealous, they need to go.

I don't need "realistic armor", but "belivable" armor. It's quite different.

It's really not. People always frame "believability" in relation to what they think is possible in reality.

I don't know about "realistic" weapons and armor, but they should look functional.

As in, daggers shouldn't look like claw hammers (like the dagger version of The Hawke's Key).  And armor should look like it's designed to protect someone.  Not like the female version of leather armor in DAO, which mysteriously develops a scoop neck when switched fro Zevran to Leliana.

I'm a bit on the 50:50 side. i like a bit of realsim, but since it's a fantasy-rpg, it shouldn't be overdone.

And a bit of variety in weapons can't be bad... better than using the same looking swords over and over. I even appreciate, if they look a bit different and more unusual... but no neon-candysticks or other absurd-looking things.

And @ Zered: I liked the bone-weapon. Maybe a bit spikey  but hey, that's what our ancestors in the stone-age used as well. To me, it looked far better than Hayder's Razor.

I prefer that it not be completely over the top but otherwise I am not concerned about a fantasy game not following the laws of our universe to the letter. or even the spirit of the universal laws either.

I think, HR was only an homage to the Ashbringer in WoW.
