From that site, ME3 is also categorized as needing a permanent online connection. So most likely DA:I will have some sort of online component that has not been announced yet. If I remember correctly, the announcement of ME3's multi-player was just a couple of months prior to the release date. It doesn't mean that you won't be able to play the non-online portion of the game if you don't have an internet connection.

I'm pretty excited to find out what this online component is. After all this game is built on top of the engine that made Battlefield 4.

IT would be best to hold off until an official statement is made and either dismisses this or clarifies what it means by.

IT could be like Steam were if you want achievements, even in a single player game, you have to be online and connected to the servers but you can still be offline however lose this feature.

I think that's a problem with digital games, what happens if the Steam, Origin, Uplay etc servers shut down will we have access to the games that we purchased? Or do we own them until the servers die. It's a fundamental flaw with the digital market.

Speaking specifically for Steam, part of the terms you automatically agree to, and of which existence they remind you of every time, when you purchase a game, specifically states that your ownership of the game only extends for the lifetime of the service. When Steampowered is canned, your ownership over the games purchased through that service dies along with it.

Edit: Steam Subscriber Agreement
Edit2: This specific section in the agreement is what I'm referring to:

10. TERM AND TERMINATION
C. Termination by Valve
Valve may cancel your Account or any particular Subscription(s) at any time in the event that (a) Valve ceases providing such Subscriptions to similarly situated Subscribers generally, or ( b ) you breach any terms of this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use). In the event that your Account or a particular Subscription is terminated or cancelled by Valve for a violation of this Agreement or improper or illegal activity, no refund, including of any Subscription fees or of any unused funds in your Steam Wallet, will be granted.

Cmon Allan, please rub that lamp, or whatever it is you are doing. I'd like to see an answer to this asap. Persistent-online DRM is a non-starter for me. Just ask SimCity and Diablo 3.

I think it's just GameFly saying that for all games that require Origin. Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3 have the same message. I played Crysis 3, and I don't remember it requiring a permanent connection.

Edit: And Mass Effect 3 has the same message. Its DLC verification was a pain in the butt, but you could still play in Offline Mode.

Better not be true. I won't be getting the game if that is the case. Diffrence between activation  and always online, and a SP game should NEVER always be online. After Diablo 3 and Simcity 4 EA really can't be that stupid.

Seems the console "peasants" have a feature they're glad isn't coming to the console versions.

In all seriousness they can't really be thinking of doing something like this so soon after the Sim City 4 debacle, right? They wouldn't want to come across like they've not learned a single thing from any of the backlash surrounding always online single player games.

Great, gives me more of reason to save my money for the Witcher 3 and just play Inquisition through 'other' means.

But srs what is EA smoking? I hope someone confirms this b4 the Uber edition is announced, i was really looking forward to that.

I always think it's funny that EA receives cries of "ruining games forever", while other game publishers do the same things, sometimes even worse than EA, and nobody comments on it.

Then again, hating on EA is the everyday pasttime for gamers around the world.

Every evil needs a face, right? Ea drew the shortest stick. Yeah other companies are just as bad, but doesn't make EA any less deserving.

I'll wait for official confirmation before jumping to any conclusions.  But if true there isn't a chance in hell I'm buying this.  As Sylvius mentioned, when I buy a game, I expect to be able to play that game whenever and wherever I want.  If I want to play it on my laptop when I'm traveling, I should be able to.  If I want to play it 20 years from now when the Origin platform is dead, I should be able to.

I know a lot of big companies are trying to change the paradigm of major software being more of a service or subscription rather than a product that you own but I'm not interested in following that path.

"Can`t connect to EA`s server. Please try again later"

Nothing learned from the Sim City embarrasement.

I look forward to the day when all games are digital downloads and the whining over most of these issues has gone down. When the people shrieking they'll never buy a game digitally because they want to 'own' it inevitably still play modern (as in, modern for the future) video games. Always online connections are indeed a concern, but most of the other things aren't.

I'm curious which big publisher will take the initiative and just stop selling boxed games entirely first.

And I look forward to the day when a company inevitably goes digital only they will get so much backlash they are forced to go back to offering boxed games. It is beyond ridiculous entertainment companies are allowed to move towards a future with zero pricing competition.

Offering boxed games is silly as a mainstay. DRM has nothing to do with using a much more sensible mode of distribution.

What are you even talking about?

How does digital distribution remove pricing competition?

This only occurs in a walled garden, like Xbox Live. On PC, there are more than a dozen retailers that are competing for digital sales, like Amazon, Steam, GreenManGaming, etc.. but on Xbox Live, there is no competition. So really, its just a matter of not doing business in a walled off ecosystem.

Uhh...yes there is. Not between services, but between games and publishers. There are expensive games and cheap games for sale on Xbox Live. Publishers and developers set the prices for the most part. That's competition.

In any case, nothing changes in that example with boxed games. Microsoft could easily just decide that all boxed Xbox games need to generate $10 extra for every sale as opposed to Playstation and PC games. So long as games aren't used, Microsoft controls boxed games just as much as Xbox live games.

This is a deal breaker for me, if true of course.

I mean I have other problems with the game, like to little female companions and they going back on their policy for romance but at least I would buy it on sale, this nop, no buy.

Let's wait for confirmation, but if true... well I guess they still haven't understood that people DO NOT want this permanent connection bullcrap companies are now trying to force on us at every turn. Microsoft tried it with the One... see how it turned out. Rebellion and backlash is all they'll get.

People HATE the idea of not truly owning a game, or that we sort of ''own the game'' only if some requirements are met at one point in time (ex: your internet connection must be up or else...).
