Where in the story line is this? It's been a while but I think I missed that.
Anyways, a favorite quote of mine is on the Citadel DLC, Silversun Casino - there are is an Asari Vanguard talking to an Adept and the Vanguard says:
"We'd finished off a wave and were regrouping, and this justicar and I set off heavy biotic blasts...And then the drell just wades in and starts kicking the air for no reason."
I laughed when I read that, it brought back a lot of memories during MP when I or teammates would just run around using their heavy melee because it was fun to do (even more so during the beta), sometimes hoping to use heavy melee to finish the kill but getting their a second too late and like with the drell just end up kicking the air a bunch of times.

It depends on the routes and decisions you take during the party. If you've always gone a certain route always, you are missing a lot, and this is a very likely situation for Grunt to fall into.
