Wynne was a great character. She was very unique, compared to the others and I really enjoyed the conversations with her about being a Grey Warden. I really missed someone like her in DA:2. Maybe the Grey Warden in Inqusition can fill the spot as an elderly advisor. (never saw her as the mother or grandmother type myself, more like a mentor.)
Wynne what did you think of her? Spoilers

I was 15 when I first played DAO. I didn't "hate" Wynne but I found her attitude grating. She spoke a lot of responsibility and duty, yet she didn't experience it. She knew nothing about being a warden, she was fixated on a fairytale idealistic view. She spoke to the warden (a mage herself) as if she were a child, while she was fully aware of what was at stake and the sacrifices she would have to make. She seemed blind on several issues and her "wisdom" seemed a bunch of clichés and banalities with little real foundation.Wonder if there is a correlation between player age and disliking her "sage" advice.
Her tantrum on Zevran and condescending attitude in the Broken Circle quest while I was doing all the work were the icing on the cake.
She seemed like a good person on the whole though, but very sanctimonious.

For the most part I liked Wynne, she did grate on the nerves at time. My female human noble really got peeved at her, in the end her advice regarding the son of king was spot on. I can forgive Wynne her preachy attitude at times for having lived in the circle all of her life, therefore not knowing how the real world actually worked. Big difference reading about legends in a library vs actually fighting a blight. Still tapping my fingers on how the darkspawn are connected to the fade according to Wynne.
It's been awhile since I read Asunder, the only thing I remember about Rhy's father is that he was a Templar. Don't forget the Ferelden Circle was the kissing circle according to Anders! If this was actually the case why did he want to leave? Boggles the mind.
I think it would be cool to see her and Anders in the fade.
I'm really surprised that Rhys will not be in the game that we know of so far.

I'm in my mid 30s. I don't like it. A person a couple posts above was in their teens. Half my age.
I don't know what age has to do with this. Not many people like platitudes and being "mentored" by ignorant shut-ins.

I guess it is just me, but I never mind folk like Wynne who give advice as a mentor. Wynne truly cares and admits that she may be wrong, and that's a kind of wisdom not every person has, unforunatelly
Or maybe that's just because I adore preachy grandparent archetype. A good advice is never a waste of time... especially from a person who has seen much more than I have

Wynne really liked pushing her moral standards on you, in terms of what your own role in the world should be. I don't like that very much about her character. She had very defined ideas about who a GW should be, and really got in your face about it.
Other than that I liked her character and her story arc in DA:O a lot.

I don't mind mentoring in itself. I suppose I just limit it to family in real life. I'm close to family. So I've always found it weird when strangers randomly come around and try to act like them. And when it comes to employers and such, I respect them, but it's all professional. Not a parental type of relationship.
This is just a game though.. but maybe it rubs me the wrong way for similar reasons.
Other than that, I don't like the Grey Wardens. So that puts me at odds anyways.

I really disliked her in Origins. I don't think a lot of people notice this, but she was pretty hypocritical in demanding that all mages go back to the Circle except herself and expecting the Warden to have no life outside of stopping the Blight. Unless you were a mage, in which case you had to go back to the Circle to help it. I also got the feeling she couldn't see past the surface: in her "romance talks" she refers to Leliana as a "sweet, innocent girl", which shows how much she actually knows about the Orlesian bard/spy/assassin. She also implies that, if the Warden is dating Morrigan or Zevran, they're just being a hormonal foolish teenager, when in reality the relationship will be affectionate at that point. She gives bad, used-up advice, preaches to everyone, cannot accept being wrong, and tries to be everyone's therapist whether they want it or not.
Her sacrifice in Asunder is admirable, but the fact that she supports the Chantry-mage-enslavement is just. Ugh.
So, no, I don't really like Wynne. I don't hate her--I think she's a great character--but I really dislike her, and I wish the Warden got more chances to call her out without sounding like a petulant child.
Right, this captures my feeling on her really well. And I agree that make her a good character while being intolerable.

To me, mentoring has to make sense. if you give me advice, I don't care who you are, but it has to be logical. If you're old you can rely on experience, but you have to tell me why that experience supports your mind. Wynne preferred to abstractly talk about your role.

Ignorant shut-in about describes her. However, she would have irritated me less if my character had been allowed to put her in her place a few times. She's in no position to dispense either relationship advice (especially considering she's been institutionalized most of her life), or advice on how to be a Warden.

I only kept her alive so I could have a healer until Morrigan ranked up a bit

Yeah, that's another thing. You can't dispute much. That might've actually been fun, and made her more endearing to me. Hell, the other characters get to do it. Oghren, Zevran, Shale, etc.. Instead, I'm forced to act like a child with her, like Alistair and Leliana do.

I know what you mean. It would have been more fun to challenge her ideas.

I loved Wynne, and most of my wardens will be sad to hear she's gone. Yes, she was a little preachy, but in a way I found understandable and I took her advice as it was: advice, not laws handed down from On High. My Wardens were (mostly) thrust into a position they were never prepared for (only my dwarf nobles, in my mind, were really taught to lead), and it was comforting to have an older person to at least talk to for advice, even advice I might not follow. She wasn't a mentor, exactly, but it was nice having a companion to semi-lean-on instead of the other way around (I love Alistair, but man! I can't make every decision for you!).
