I have a soft spot for Fallout 3, mainly because it was the first RPG that I played but also I really like the post apocalypse setting. That being said I still prefer FNV by a longshot.

I agree New Vegas is lacking too (I never said it's the best RPG/game ever) but I still think it's the better RPG & Fallout game.

Yeah, that's System Shock 2. Haha.

I don't actually have any problems with people claiming something is the best thing ever as long as they can explain themselves without ripping on other games. But yeah, Fallout New Vegas is one of my all-time favs.

I think FO3 and FO:NV have very different sets of strengths and weaknesses. For me, I prefer FO3 by a small margin, but I can understand why some people would disagree.

What FO3 gets right is the overall atmosphere of the Capital Wasteland and the way that exploring locations usually leads you to something interesting even if it has nothing to do with the main plot or any sidequests, e.g. all the different tape recordings and computer entries that you can find. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, the game makes it easy to identify with your character - not only do you play bits of the LW's childhood, but you're discovering the Wasteland at the same time that (s)he is, and there's an obvious motive to find your father. Even if you assume the two didn't get along and the LW resents James, you're given some strong hints early on that the story of your birth was a lie. Most people would at least want to find out what really happened. What the Brotherhood asks you to do after that, i.e. help them establish and gain control of a pure water source, is pretty sensible and straightforward, and even a selfish or evil LW probably doesn't want to drink irradiated water.

FO:NV does a much better job at sketching out the backstory of what's happening and creating multiple factions where even those with somewhat similar ethical outlooks may not be on the same page at times. While the atmosphere wasn't as compelling as FO3's, its fictional society feels more realistic and complex. On the other hand, the Courier seems to be pre-programmed as having (a) very little knowledge of the factions beforehand, (B) something of a ruthless streak, even in the non-Legion paths, and © either enough faith in one of the factions to anoint them as the new leaders or the self-confidence to try to outmaneuver and displace all of them, or else you'll hit a point where the game just doesn't progress. So even though much of the writing in FO:NV is better, the bottom line for me was that playing the Courier just wasn't as enjoyable.

I didn't find either PC all that identifiable, both of them where my vessel into that world but that's about it. And Fallout 3 did have better exploration I guess, but they also had to make enemies pretty weak to do so. And "atmosphere" is such a vague thing, that's by and large completely random depending on the individual. I think I would say that both of them had equally good "atmospheres".

I'd like to see FO4 have a weapon/armor arsenal that's as expansive as FONV or larger, item customization,  new enemy types, a pet gecko, lvl 50 cap for the vanilla game, and FONV styled companions.

For all those claiming FO3 has a better atmosphere, that's because the settings are different .

Despite being hit by the bombs 200 years prior, FO3 has the atmosphere of a game clearly post-apocalypse. Whereas New Vegas is in transition to a post-post-apocalypse setting. The post-apocalypse being the stories of Fallout 1 and 2. NV isn't a post-apocalyptic game in the traditional sense. The driving motif isn't "how do we rebuild society?", it's " what kind of society do we build?"

It's one of the reasons I firmly believe Avellone used nukes as a plot device in Lonesome Road. It's an admission that the Fallout setting cannot continue as-is and still be "Fallout" without a literal reset button - it's progressed too far to be about the "fall out" anymore.

All I hope from Fallout 4 is that it's not set on the West Coast. Bethesda can make a pretty environment and fun game, but they know next to ****** nothing about the themes and ideas that underpin the Fallout universe beyond superficial plot elements.

LOL. I'm assuming you meant that as "Fallout 3 is not an RPG", well that is true.

^This is an RPG. They are very common in games like Call of Duty.

No, I meant that as "the first RPG you played came out in 2008?"

Oh. Back then I did not play a wide variety of games. I would say the vast majority of games I have played have been from 2009 to now. And if you think that's bad the only reason I ended up playing it was because my brother bought it under false pretences. And I happened to be bored one day and it was sitting around collecting dust.

^Somehow that trailer reminded my brother of Gears of War.

@Dermain

Basically. But as you can see, the trailer doesn't show the game at all. Just some ruined buildings, a soldier guy, and with a catchy song playing (so Gears of War). LOL.

I go one step further and say Fallout Tactics has better gameplay than both FO3 and New Vegas!

Same here; I've only really been into gaming for four or five years (basically since I was legally allowed to buy M games), so most of what I've played has all been from the last generation.

Fallout 3 was actually one of the first RPGs I played too.

Hard to believe that last generation launched almost a decade ago.

I remember getting a 360 (RIP) around the time Oblivion hit, where did all that time go?

I loved Fallout 3, but the crafting system was pure shite. FONV may have had "issues" but they got that one WAY right. And that's a big one with me

100s of recipes with 4 major crafting interfaces + being able to reload ammo vs. 7 (and 5 of those were shite).

I'm a total FO3 fan, but its crafting mechanic is hard to bear on subsequent playthroughs after spending even 2 hours in the Mojave.

Recommendation: Keep New Vegas' mechanic (or improve it) for FO4.
