First off, I'm really excited about DA:I, I'm trying to figure out on which platform I'm going to pre-order on.

But, with the new trailer and the semi-reveal of all our companions surrounding our Inquisitor, I'm left a little disappointed. I know that it's a new main character in a new land and I guess they need their own new squad of new characters, but I can't help but feel like we're diluting the waters here and getting less interesting characters this time around.

Mass Effect 3 only added one new playable companion to the mix with Vega and brought back most of our favorite characters as either cameos or squad-mates. That's the formula that I was hoping for DA:I as well.

I suppose we have Varric from DA:II and Morrigan and Liliana from DA:1, but aside from Varric & Morrigan, Liliana seems (at least to me) to be there more for story reasons than fan love.

I would really like to see Alistair, Anders, Aveline, Bethany/Carver, Fenris, Isabella, Loghain, Merrill, Nathaniel Howe, Oghren, Sebastian, Sigrun, Sten, Velanna, Wynne, or Zevran again sometime. I'm nostalgic for old characters.

But, again, if it's a completely new group for new protagonist. Cool. I'll get used to it. - I just hope we get a chance to play as The Warden or Hawke again to see some of our old friends. I wouldn't be opposed to a Dragon Age: Origins 2 or a Dragon Age II: 2.

I think it's a little early to declare all the new companions uninteresting, since we don't actually know much about them and haven't seen how they will be like in-game.

Why do you think the new characters are less interesting? I think they're more interesting, since many of them likely have perspectives we haven't experienced before.

We usually get the argument for less cameos, not more. :P

As for the new characters, don't discount them until you play. All those people you love were in their shoes and look what happened.

Alistair has been confirmed to return, the others you listed remain to be seen(but I doubt atleast half are gonna show up). I'm all for returning characters as long as it make sense for them to be there than "just because"

Its hard to grow the franchise if Bioware focuses too much on the old characters and doesn't look forward. There is a lot of world left here that we haven't even touched. This looks like a good bunch of companions, so while I am excited by the (entirely implausible and unlikely) prospect of a Leliana/Morrigan/Alistair reunion scene done purely in the interest of fanservice, I'm much more interested to see what new relationships and dynamics evolve with my new companions to make them as memorable as those 3 :)

I'm honestly kind of hoping Inquisition is the last of this sort of 'arc' of returning characters, and the following games will be completely fresh.

There is actually lot more returning characters than you mentioned:

From games: Leliana, Morrigan, Varric, Cullen, Cassandra, Dagna (rumoured). All of these seem to play rather big part.

Then from novels there is Cole who is companion and probaply many other characters from Asunder and The Masked Empire (Celene at least) but I haven't read the books so I'm not sure.

Most likely there will be cameos of other characters as well. I'm excepting to see Flemeth and Sandal at least.

I don't necessarily need a clean break, but as time goes less and less characters from Origins should appear then DA2. I mean, if Alistair is in Inquisition, he hasta be getting closer to his calling. Leliana can't be a master spy forever because she is getting older, same with Zev. I like these reminders that the world is aging and growing and that things are happening 'in between' our visits to the world as a protagonist. But I definitely prefer quality reappearances over sheer quantity.

You just gave the primary reason for the new characters, being the third game in the series has a totally different PC in a different region of Thedas.

Mass Effect 3 only added one new playable companion to the mix with Vega and brought back most of our favorite characters as either cameos or squad-mates. That's the formula that I was hoping for DA:I as well.

ME was a saga based on one PC that continued over through the series and played a very specific role that s/he has insight of the main enemies intentions throughout, DA doesn't do this. The Grey Warden's story ended with DA:O as did Hawke's with DA2. I think that suffices it to say that having a completely new PC for DA:I would entail having different companions for the most part. Also, if one has the "From Ashes" DLC for ME3, they get another squad-mate named Javik outside of just Vega.

I suppose we have Varric from DA:II and Morrigan and Liliana from DA:1, but aside from Varric & Morrigan, Liliana seems (at least to me) to be there more for story reasons than fan love.

Morrigan is not going to be a companion from what I've read (unless there's an update). Leliana, AFAIK hasn't been confirmed as a companion. She seems plausible considering her bit part in The Exiled Prince DLC for DA2 and her exchange with Cassandra (who is confirmed) in the ending cut-scene of DA2.

Keeping with the flow of having different PCs in the first two games, I personally don't want them , even if it is just to reminisce. This is mostly because my PC would have little knowledge of them on a personal basis aside from having little in common.

I like new things. If the roster of faces was nothing but new characters, I'd be pleased.

Having Cullen and Leliana is nice. Cassandra counts as 'new' in my mind. Morrigan makes sense. I suppose there's nothing wrong with Varric - he's becoming the Garruslike broromance of the series and I look forward to seeing how he develops.

For me, that's quite enough call back to previous games.

Old companions should be only cameos

Most of them shouldn't even be cameos if they have no business being there in the first place, like Zevran or Alistair.

I like seeing a few returning characters here and there and im really excited for varric to be back, Cass as well though she wasn't a companion before. But for the most part I want new characters, except this time most of them don't really interest me. I mean, im super duper excited for Cole and a bit for Sera but only because of her hair at this point. The rest don't really interest me....

If there is a new protagonist then I would like to see that there is also new companions as well. It's nice to have some old companions as well and some cameos (I think cameos are the best like seeing Alistair in DA2 during the Demands of the Qun) but I rather have new ones because the story is different and I want to get to know my companions and what comes to old companions. Well I know them already. I also like the thought that my old companions have been retired so they don't have to fight anymore.

No way, having to many of the old companions be companions in the next game would be annoying, Glad they didn't make Nathaniel one of them in DA2 (Great character dont get me wrong, but having Him AND Anders..geez)
Anyway tbh I disagree with you, I feel these companions look to be the most interesting ones we've ever had

Apparently Alistair was looking for allies...Considering he didn't even ask for any type of Alliance and clearly didnt do his homework before coming to Kirkwall his presence was really strange..They could have come up with a reason for being there but since all he said was "Protect Kirkwall...from something, idk what" He could have easily just sent a letter...Or even Teagan even though that would still be strange.

And Zevran just felt the best place to kill Antivan Crows was the southern Free Marches...Mmmk rightio then

WIth constantly changing protagonists the game needs returning characters to give the game world consistency. If EVERY single character was a new character, the game might aswell be a new IP. Had we had the same protagonist throughout the series, the game could ahve introduced brand new characters exclusively, since the protagonist would be providing the world consistency.

I love new characters. I am not a big fan of the legendary 3 ( Garrus, Tali, Liara ) tbh.
ME was the journy of the Shepard, it makes sense that there are returning characters.

But we are getting quite some returning characters as well.

Leliana and Cullen as advisors.
( Espionage/Military)

Morrigan will have an impact on the plot.
Cole from Asunder.

Varric and Cass as companions.

I think this roster could be the best yet. The same people coming back can be boring or you might hate that guy from the past game.

I like for there to be as little amount of returning characters as possible, at least in terms of party members. I loved Alistair, Morrigan and Leliana and I'm glad they'll be making a reappearance in DA:I...as NPCs. As much as I enjoyed Varric in DA2 (probably my favourite along with Aveline), having him return as a companion makes me feel like I have one less to experience, since I'll likely very rarely make use of him when I have Sera and Cole there - two characters who I haven't gotten to experience or get to know yet (in-game at least).

To me it's like getting Pokemon Red and Super Mario for Christmas one year, and then Pokemon Blue and Super Metroid the next. Pokemon Blue is fine, but I'm going to be pretty much ignoring it until I've gotten my fill of Super Metroid because it's game I've basically already played, fallen in love with and moved on from. Weird (and very 90s) comparison, but it's the best way I could think of to relate it.

Well, there seems to be a trend about companions in Dragon Age:

-DA:O: All original characters (obviously; fitting for a game called Origins).

-Awakening: Oghren from DA:O + others

-DA2: Anders from Awakening + others

-DA:I: Varric from DA2 + others

Who will be the DA:I companion that will join us for the next installment in the series?

Apparently Alistair was looking for allies...Considering he didn't even ask for any type of Alliance and clearly didnt do his homework before coming to Kirkwall his presence was really strange..They could have come up with a reason for being there but since all he said was "Protect Kirkwall...from something, idk what" He could have easily just sent a letter...Or even Teagan even though that would still be strange.

Yeah, they could have justified it better, couldn't they? Alistair could have come to visit the Fereldan refugees or something, since there were many in Kirkwall.

It's tough to say which is better because we barely know any of the new companions. I believe Viviane is the only one we've never met before that has been introduced to us. I had that same thought that I'm underwhelmed with the new cast and have to constantly remind myself otherwise.
