Ideally I wouldn't want any returning characters within the party.

In my mindset, The Warden's Team is the Warden's team, Hawke's team is Hawke's team, and the Inquisitor's team is the Inquisitor's team.

I was as little overlap between those three groups as possible.

Just go the Isabela route. She was a bit player in DA:O and completely optional in DA2.

Mass Effect 3 only added one new playable companion to the mix with Vega and brought back most of our favorite characters as either cameos or squad-mates. That's the formula that I was hoping for DA:I as well.

I wanted to bad to kill that douchey frat boy. I'm having a party here with my friends Tali and Garrus and YOU are not invited!

Story is a million times better a reason to bring back a character than fan love.

Why do people so love to make claims about characters they know next to nothing about?

I like all of the new companions so far, Solas is the hottest so far...Cole and Dorian (moustache guy) look very interesting.

Because Dragon Age doesn't focus around any one protagonist or any one organization (like the Grey Wardens), I would prefer that old characters stay out unless they're related to the story somehow.  Leliana's recurrence, for example, I can easily see.  But if, I don't know, Velanna shows up in Kirkwall, it's a bit "why are you here".

Thedas is a big place with little advanced communication or transportation available, so, I'd prefer new characters.

I am the complete opposite. I'm actually bummed to see like 4 people we've met before. I want new people and new characters to either hate or enjoy. Returning characters always come with your previous experience attached to them.

I like a mix of both, with it being weighted towards "new," so this line up is pretty exciting for me. With returning characters, there's always the chance the companion returning is someone I am not particularly interested in seeing again and it makes me pessimistic. To be fair, though, when they've brought back someone I didn't particularly care if I saw again (Anders, Merrill), they were interesting enough that I wound up being glad to have them. Still, if it's ~all new~ people, I have an easier time getting excited than when I'm thinking "blaaaaah, I don't give a crap about Leliana" or whatever.

That said, I am pleased Varric is returning. <3

One redeeming quality of like 4 returnees is that only two were companions. Cassandra is still pretty new despite having met her before, and Cullen and Leliana are apparently agents vs squaddies.

However, how did Cullen get to become the speculated military advisor? Dude was a Templar. Not a knight or commander or leftenant  of a military or anything.
