Is this going to be a true RPG like DA1, Icewind Dale, and Neverwinter Nights or a novel like DA2 and ME2?

If it's going to go the 'My name is Hawk no matter what and this is my story' then I won't be making this purchase come relase date.

Also, is it going to support mods like DA1 did?

Thanks.

Icewind Dale is not an RPG; it's a D&D combat simulator where you control - via hive-mind - a bunch of multi-classed faceless mooks.

Considering the amount of choices we got in a 30 minute demo let alone a 100+ hour game, im pretty sure we'll be making enough choices to shape and mold our character

What is a true RPG? I believe that both ME2 and DA2 fit the bill as far as the "standard" definition of crpgs goes. I would need to know OP's definition of a rpg to make a comparison. I know my definition. Also some gamers on this forum would say that DAO was a novel compared to earlier crpgs like BG1, BG2 Planescape Torment, the Ultimas and a few others.

It'll have a voiced protagonist, so i suspect you may consider it to have more in common with the second class of games you mentioned

Good. We were overdue for a "what is an RPG" thread.

Well, I think most of us can at least agree that Icewind Dale was crap.

Oh look! Another thread that tries to define what an RPG is.  I'm sure this will be productive.

It's a party RPG. Meaning our choice is limited to the companion we'll take as date to the great Orlesian Ball.

I'm thinking on Bear, if he charms me in game.

Is that what you wanted to hear, OP?

The tale of Dragon Age: Origins (from the perspective of the human noble)

  • Your surname is Cousland, this cannot be changed
  • You are in a position of authority, granted special rights to do what you need to do, you are a grey warden!
  • You are tasked with gathering allies and an army to defeat an enemy, the Darkspawn.
  • You reach the end of a long journey that spans the kingdom of Ferelden where you defeat the arch demon!

The tale of Mass Effect 2

  • Your surname Shepard, this cannot be changed
  • You are in a position of authority, granted special rights to do what you need to do, you are a spectre! (or agent of the elusive man given a ship to get the job done, take your pick)
  • You are tasked with gathering allies and the tools to defeat an enemy, the collectors.
  • You reach the end of a long journey that spans the galaxy where you defeat the Human Reaper!

I'm sorry what was that about DA:O being this totally open RPG where everything is wildly different depending on your choices and ME2 being a "novel"?

I may have taken liberties there, i realize you didn't actually say that, but i think it is what you meant.

Is your definition of an rpg based on how grindy it is?

I think the question is not 'What is an rpg?' so much as it is 'will our choices matter or we be railroaded as transparently as we were in DA2?'

I don't think ME2 was anywhere near as bad as DA2, but I do agree DA2 would have worked better as a novel. Anders always completes his mission, that one anti-Qunari sister always screws you over, and the serial killer is always given free reign until it is too late.

Will DAI do well? I hope so, but I'm still going to wait until after it has come out to see.

They've had a much longer amount of time to make the game than DA2, and initial gameplay demos look promising. Hopefully this time we will be able to do more with our character than simply act as a soundboard responding to unalterable events, but we will see.

You get to create your own character, and the game has noncombat skills, as well as combat skills. That makes it a proper rpg.

A game, with full fledged "novel quality" characters and plot, where my own character is the protagonist and the one who shapes the story through his decisions doesn't sound like a bad idea to me.

I'm more likely to invest more time and appreciate a game with interesting complex lore and characters, than one with superficial decorative characters and plot that are simply there to give you a reason to hack and slash your way throughout the world. In few words I wouldn't mind playing "a novel".

I know your point might be different, but no offence the comparison is rather poor.

Don't all Bio games do this?

I thought this was going to be a dating sim! I'm cancelling my pre-order!

On a serious note, I'm sure this is going to be an RPG of some type.

The railroading in ME2 was actually worse. You died no matter what, and were forced to join the organization that was clearly an enemy in the beginning, and for at least one background, was responsible for killing most of your squad. Your alignment in the entire game basically hinged on everyone else in the galaxy being fatally incompetent. Shepard's optional objections were for naught.

I do hope they cut the auto dialogue down to a minimum. I felt like the warden was very much my creation but Hawke definitely wasn't.

I think it was already mentioned that auto-dialogue will be limited this time, apart from some generic phrases like "go on" etc..
