I dont see why that would take them away from their previous design though, why not elaborate and diversify those features for CC instead of just making them humans with horns and pointed ears

Because if you had to design entirely new CC features that only applied to this one race that only a subset of players you pick would use, you'd be wasting your time. The rig is the same as the human-elf-dwarf one, or closer to it, because it saves work. There were only 2 qunari faces in all of DA2.

Also, honestly, the only difference I see in the two pictures you posted is that the qunari has really eyes and a very low brow and thinner lips.

And the jaw structure and the ear profile and the area where his horns meet his forehead. Plus those things alone can make a significant difference in appearance

Bioware, you give me a bald vashot (whatever horns could work for me) with a cool beard and a decent war paint or tattoo, and I'll be a happy camper with my vash-saarebas inquisitor.

Qunaris could have beards? first qunari I've seen with a beard.

Sten had one in the (non-canon) Sacred Ashes trailer, as well as being shown to have grown one after becoming the new Arishok in the Those Who Speak comic.

Considering that most players will choose to wear full suits of armor or robes, body paint would be a waste of resources as it almost always be covered.  However, I do think that we will have a selection of face tattoos or face paint to choose from.
