Probably one of the only times I'll agree with Plaintiff on anything.
I don't think you'll get a responsible, looks like Plaintiff got himself banned again.

I almost never kill animals. In Far Cry 3 where the whole point of the game is to kill animals and climb towers, i attacked only Crocodiles and nasty stuff like that. If i am presented with a choice to kill a human being i do not know or kill some animal ( dont have to be dog, for example pig, zebra, squarrel etc...) i will choose with great ease the human.
I don't think we have to. It doesn't make sense for the player to be forced to kill them. I wouldn't do it.
Ever play Dark Souls? The game goes out of its way to make you feel like a heel with one boss (arguably others as well, but those are more pity and less "look at what you are doing, you disgusting monster!"). 'Course, nobody in the game is really good, and the game really wants to stress that you are no different: just an actor in the play.
Demon's souls is worse. The game totally takes you on the guilt trip while you beat the valley of defilement boss.
Oh geez... another guy that would never have survived in ancient times. "Me hungry. Me wanna eat. There pig. Won't kill pig - to cute. Me starve." - lol.
WE ARE TALKING ABOUT GAMES. Do you really feel guilty by killing pixels and polygones? So you rather shoot Humans than animals? That's sooooo awkward.
How did humanity ever achieve getting on top of the food chain? Beyond me.
Since we don't live in ancient times, what is even your point?

I probably wouldn't survive in ancient times either. Mostly because I don't live in ancient times and don't need to have the same skillset that they need.
No need to get on a poster's case because they prefer to not kill animals in games. This type of agency is what I love about video gaming.

what i meant is this increasing behavior of treating animals like humans - hell, sometimes even better.
And what we're talking about here ain't even a real living beeing. We're talking about a part of a game... a programm an artificial thing consisting on 0 and 1.
So why are there people flipping out about something which is usual in real life and even more in a mevieval society, which Dragon Age expresses?
The same kind of people who buy their leather-shoes and jackets not thinking about the animals which died for it in real.
The same kind of people who angers the noise of children playing in the afternoon but not the barking of their dog at 3:00 oclock in the morning.
The same kind of people who don't care shooting a bazillion of humans in Far cry 3 but don't like to kill some deer for it's leather.
So i don't care what sort of animal it is in the GAME. If there's meaning in killing it (for crafting or XP) i do. And i won't feel bad because i know how to differ betwen reality and a virtual world inside a game.
Like I said before, humans aren't cute. I care about cute things.
Maybe one of the quest requirements to continue a romance subplot is to kill some foxes or rabbits and make a fur coat for your LI.

Is anyone suggesting that you should feel bad? Are people flipping out or was this thread mostly created for fun (because I took the OP to be more playful in nature).
I'll admit I went over the thread stupendously quickly so I may have missed some of that.
You could argue that the the indifference towards killing people, but not cute animals, is perhaps a result of our desensitization towards violence towards people. Or we feel that a human's are less innocent than animals? There's a host of reasons that someone may not want to kill cute animals in a video game. Those reason's are theirs alone and shouldn't affect you. I don't think appealing to the realism nature of medieval society is particularly relevant either.
You're right, it's just a game. So if people don't want to kill cute critters that's up to them. Note, I'm not saying that we have (or have not) taken this feedback and adjusted content to fall in line with it.

I think it's one of those things that's hard to take into account because you can't always just account for everything like not putting in spiders or snakes for people with those phobias. It's also pretty common to have hunting side-quests in games like this such as Dragon's Dogma though I was hunting animals before I even got those quests to practice my archery, especially with birds.

Yeah, I don't much like the hunting aspect in video games. Killing weird, evil creatures (goblins, aliens, monsters) is one thing, and killing people who intend to harm you is another. But killing innocent things, or innocent people, that is not fun to me. I went ahead and did the Dark Brotherhood quest in Skyrim, but I must admit that it was a little tough. Sometimes talking to my targets made it easier because they ended up being jerks. But still. If others want to hunt in their games, then I guess that is their thing. True, it's not real. But some people are just not entertained by doing it, simulated or otherwise. Reasons I can't play things like GTA.

Cougars aren't innocent. Those things hunt you down as your prey while you do everything you can just not to get hit once. ![]()
If people have issue with killing something innocent in a game, it probably means the game has successfully sold its illusion. Since that is one of the biggest things it's trying to do, I don't understand what the issue is. Nearly everything we discuss on these boards relates to virtual content. If pixels don't even matter within the context of the game, what's the point of participating in the illusion, discussing the moral/political issues it puts forward, or making roleplaying decisions that define our character?
Re: People Are Hypocritically Okay With Killing Humans: The humans I kill in videogames are usually attacking me. The animals we're discussing here are not. I wouldn't be any happier if there was a sidequest to collect ten skins from innocent humans, if that's what you mean. Though by your reasoning, I shouldn't have any qualms with doing that either because they're just pixel people and it's just a game.
Re: None Of You Pansies Could Hack It In Ancient Times "Oh Don't Let Me Kill De Wuvly Foxes" Wah: Hey hey easy there Iron John. One, we left ancient times behind for a reason: they were awful. Worst fad EVER. If you're living your life as if you could at any moment be teleported back in time to the Bronze Age, you got problems. Two, Dragon Age isn't really hard dry medieval realism. It certainly doesn't force us to survive off the land. Moral and character choices (like, whether or not to kill things that pose no threat to us
) play a much bigger role in our experience than feeding or clothing ourselves. Killing a peaceful woodland creature provokes the question "what does this say about me?" not "how many days will this feed me for?"

We cougars aren't innocent, and -true- we'll hunt you down. But damn if we're not sexy.
Don't make me break out the holy water!
Innocence... a strange word to differ between animals in a functioning biosphere and a very subjective impression of a being called "human" which thinks of himself as higher placed.
A fox might look sooooo innocent...but put him into a henhouse and you got yourself a massacre. The rats which brought the pest 1347 were also innocent even though not as cute. A doggie might look cute, but can also bite children to death (happened more than once). And i've even seen cats eating the 4-days-old cadaver
of a runover bunny. Innocence...pff!
And for all of you i have a request. Bioware add an enemy type: A white murderous bunny like seen in knights of the coconut.
I actually think choosing NOT to kill innocent creatures either IRL or in a game is an incredibly good thing and says a lot about a persons character. I avoid it at all costs because that's how I am and an awful lot of me carries over into games that I play, that's just how it is. I'm not saying that everyone that does choose to is an evil sh**head either, but I'm glad that I react to it the way that I do. I'd never want to experience being an evil btard for instance, I do however love the opportunity to play at saving what I can...
There wasn't a Whale left in the ocean by the time I was done with Assassins Creed 4.
Although it helped that Edward took his shirt off to hunt them.
If the Inquisitor takes their kit off to hunt then I'll kill everything in Thedas as well.

Amusing is it not?

Hehehe same, I killed enough digital Orca and Humpback whales to ****** off Sea Shepard.

Even though I don't swing that way, I have to admit Edward looked quite handsome as a whaler.

My friends wife got super upset when we were playing the game and I showed him the whaling parts. Especially when they were hauled up the side of the boat.
On Topic: If there's a crafting resource I'll hunt the animals, I love the hunting mechanics in RDR and AC3 favorite part of the games for me, even if the animals are cute. If the animal has no use though I won't touch them, like the foxes in Skyrim, there's plenty of wolves for leather, or the rabbits in Skyrim. Now if those rabbits had dropped a lucky rabbits foot to help me get more loot, they'd all be dead.
I found the whaling aspect of Assassin's Creed IV to be extremely distressing, even though I accept its inclusion on a basis of historical accuracy.
