There is nothing weird about it. Some people don't think like you do and don't just see pixels. It is like telling people they are weird for displaying certain emotions while watching a movie which is obviously not real either. Don't you ever display a single emotion watching a movie, playing a game, reading a book?
And there i thought i had a vivid fantasy, but ok. I can see the logic in there... even though i never experienced tis kind of fondness with a fictional animal.
There are plenty of gamers who have a hard time killing something which looks cute (what is cute is a matter of opinion but it is often non-aggressive animals or most young animals). For example, in AC3 I had a hard time killing beavers (I still killed them anyway) because of the sound they made and how they were trying to flee the scene and failing to do so. It is a sensory perception. Maybe you can turn this off but not everyone can. It is not weird, it is human to have emotions, pixels or not. If we wouldn't care about nonexistent beings I believe we as humans wouldn't even have any type of entertainment. Why care, it is all make believe anyway.
Alright, that's fair. Maybe i'm not as sensible as you guys or i can only empathise with humans but i get your point. It seem high-end graphic has it's downside for some. Somehow i find that amusing.
Now, I have no problem being able to kill the foxbeings, but I also have zero problems with it being completely optional (as it having no part in the main questline).
Also, why should it matter that people have issues killing wildlife? Not sure what it is to anyone. I don't need to hunt for my food. And even if I am forced to do so if something goes horribly wrong in real life, then maybe but probably not. I am perfectly fine with the realization that hunting is just not for me and may never be for me. Nobody needs to justify him/herself for having issues with hunting. At the same time I do eat meat. Yes, I am a hypocrite but I am one by choice. As long as I don't have to do the killing, nor have to see it I will continue to eat meat because I happen to love meat. I am glad I don't have to make the choice between having to kill in order to eat meat or not eat meat at all. Not needing to make that choice is one of the perks of living in this day and age. In games I feel the same way. I do think twice about killing "innocent" wildlife or cattle. It is just the way I am wired and I just doubt I am the only one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this.
And yes, at the same time a lot of us can kill humans in the games we play but this can have different reasons. It could be because of the Uncanny Valley and humans not quite looking realistic enough yet in games. Or it could be that some of us only care about something which looks like it can't defend itself, ie a baby or young animal. It is good for you that you may not have this emotion though but others do. It is not weird, it is just different from how you approach games.
Well i guess in some way every human is a hypocrite but... this "innocent" feels still like a misplaced term to mel Like, how do you divide between innocent and not innocent? When is it alright to kill these formal "innocents"? Where's the border? Yeah, it's mostly a personal thing but it's because of this that this term feels too vague to me.
Reminds me of a quote from captain america 2 movie: "If they shoot at you, they're the bad guys". Ah well, if only the world would be always just this easy...
Anyway you made yurself clear and i can understand and follow your argumentation. I guess overall it just comes down that - to me - it seems and feels wrong to care morefor "cute","innocent" animals than for humans. Reminds me of an oooold gag i heard back in schooldays : What does the captain of a sinking greenpeace ship shout? Everyone to the lifeboats! Pandas, Koalas, white tigers, gorillas, chimps (and so on) first, then women and children. I didn' laugh back then and i don't laugh now.
