So after watching and reading about other people's platinum solos, I finally decided to try one myself. Tried a White/Collectors with a PPR TGI, but got picked up by a crab on wave 4 (being stupid), then figured I should up my scrubbiness factor a bit so I whipped out the Flamer GT on Giant/Reapers, only to get targets on waves 3 AND 6 and just bleed out on wave 7 because I had used up all but 2 of my gels on those two waves alone. Even though they were fails, I was encouraged because I realized that I could definitely do it- just had to go for Maximum Scrubbiness (i.e. armored compartments). Naturally, I didn't get targets twice the second time so I didn't even  need all those missiles, would've been better off with omnicapacitors or expert package or something.

Now, I'm not especially pleased with the time, but I'm glad to have done it, and will definitely try another in the near future with a less cheesy kit/map, and maybe try Collectors again.

photo_zps0b0c8386.jpg

Objectives were Hack/Targets/Escort. Flamer GT (66644) with acolyte and collector SMG, armored compartments, cylconic 4, pistol amp 3, phasic 3.

My question, for any more seasoned platinum solo artists, is how the heck do people get their times down so low? I definitely could shave 10-15 minutes off of this time (I was playing fairly cautious), but I honestly doubt I could've done it any faster than that. Any tips on getting a better time?

(oh, and yes, this is an e-peen thread; even scrubs gotta stroke their e-peen every now and again...)

Gratz dude. Plat solo is plat solo, I wouldn't pay the time a bit of attention  ;)

Edit: to address one of your questions above, 1 of the best things you can do to lower your time is to play Glacier, White, one of the small maps. Also realize you're talking about the best of the best here, so it might be better to glory in your victory rather than try to reach Zeus status.  :)

Congrats. For us mortals a 60 minute Platinum solo is nothing to be ashamed of.

Congrats.

In order to start lowering your times, it's best to focus your attention on enemies that deplete more of the spawn budget but take less time to kill (a few ravagers go down faster than 1 banshee, for example). Not only that, but it means you'll very likely only have to put up with killing a few boss units in every wave. In fact, Cerberus and Collectors are probably easier in respects to getting fast clear times, as Abominations net a decent point value, take so little time to kill, and always rush right towards you. And phantoms can be scoffed at thanks to the almighty acolyte.

The thread in regards to this

I still have yet to finish one in under 50 though. Your time is really good, however (my first solo on the same map/faction w/ Cabal was ~70-75 mins)

Congrats! I still haven't done a plat solo and yours was faster than my gold solos, so keep up the good work!

Geth White is what I do for easy mode ~34min plat solos. There are only 3 gears, AC, GC and GS and AL for a NR run I guess.

Speaking from experience:

Ditch giant and go with white. White is generally faster and easy to funnel the enemies too. Lots of places to abuse RHA and a couple of helpful ladders to block enemy passage.

If you want quicker times, don't combat reapers. Reapers are annoying as hell and the constant banshee pressure and screams makes it slow and a bore imo. Collectors are probably the easiest if you go by 'least BS' rule but sadly too many bullet sponges make them slow. The fastest factions are geth and cerberus but you need to be willing to put up with the enormous amount of BS they throw at you.

Also, if you want fast times, don't save all 6 missiles for wave 10 or something like that. I usually save only 2 missiles going into wave 10 and mostly use rockets for spawn nuking rather than on objectives.

Why I enjoy collectors? Only one wave with phantom DR nonsense, and even that wave has abombs, which can be farmed to drain the wave budget. Waves 4 and 8 are the only tough waves on collectors platinum and making use of nukes on those waves can help with speedrunning collectors platinum.

Oh, and congrats :)

Yeah, this is one reason why I'll probably try a different faction next time- I was trying to target units like Brutes, Ravagers, Pyros, Hunters, and Phantoms, but the Banshees constantly chasing you around the map make it sort of hard to do that. Especially on the waves where there's a frickin' Prime strollin' around staggering you everytime you pop out of cover...

Normally I'd want no part of a Geth solo on platinum (so much stagger... gives me the willies just thinking about it), but looking at the enemies per wave breakdown, it actually doesn't look that bad. When you run a Venom kit soloing plat, do you bring a backup for boss units (hurricane or something I guess)?

I suspect Venom QME wouldn't be too bad to do Geth White- give 'em a taste of their own medicine with that stagger, and its not like I'll be hurting for grenades... although I think I'd feel sort of naked without Geth Scanner or HM.

Yeah, will do- which will actually make it more fun since I actually sort of hate Giant, and White is one of my favorite maps, and probably one of the ones I'm most comfortable on (if not THE most). And my only problem with Collectors is that Scions are such trolls, but otherwise very manageable (crabs are waaaay less of a PITA than banshees are, IMO)... But White/Collectors was what I tried first (yesterday), and will probably try it again, maybe with a more interesting character this time.

Anyways, thanks for the tips everyone. May try another one tonight, probably on White- just have to decide on the faction and kit.

Oh, and I'll just note that the whole thing almost came to an abrupt and tragic end on wave 9- RNG troll spawned me, spawning the phantom I had just killed behind me, and she snuck up on me and melee'd me from behind; I managed to hit Ops Pack just in time, as she sync'd me about .0001 seconds later. Whew!

Congrats OP, well done. About the time, I was going to advice to equip geth scanner, but then I saw that you had the HM. So, just from my experience :

-fight Cerberus. Phantoms and dragoons can be killed very quickly, represent a good part of the budget, and don't force you to run away constantly as banshees can do;

- bet on your luck (i.e not getting targets wave 10), so don't keep 4 missiles for wave 10. Against Cerberus, I usually fire 2 missiles wave 5 (I no longer stand waves with double Banshees), 1 wave 8 (Prime + Atlas) and 1 wave 9 (Atlases + Banshee). Having 2 missiles or even 1 for the clean up of wave 10 after the completion of the objective is enough IMO;

- Giant isn't the fastest map, as you're almost obliged to camp the LZ for a good RHA. White is better for that.

Good luck for your future attempts.

Congrats :) !

If you go for fast time i guess you have to keep trying the same setup until you get lucky :), which is why I'll never care too much for fast times.

On this one, banshees should melt quite fast with acolyte/phasics + flamer ?

Congrats OP!

As some have already said, don't worry about the time. Especially for your first Platinum solo, you just want to get the job done. Faster times will come with experience. Some players - of which I am a prime example - just don't have a playstyle that will lend itself to speedrunning a solo. Are you an aggressive player? If so, then it's just a matter of time before you get a sub-45 min solo.

As for saving 4 rockets for wave 10, that's personal preference. I usually try to get the solo done on my first attempt, so I don't want it to fail because of "Targets." I do try to nuke at least one spawn on wave 8/9 depending on the faction. That leaves one rocket for a wave 10 cleanup. Since I like to solo against Cerberus and the Atlasses have a ton of shields, I just can't get tje objective done by normal means with most kits - when there are 8 enemies trying to kill you, and the target is usually shielded by the rest of them.

First plat solo is always something to feel a sense of accomplishment about, q5. No need to downplay it. I've been working on lowering my times too, but I couldn't tell you anything more than what Ribo and Slasher already covered.

Grats!

I never bring a secondary with Venom. Atlas are the only PITA and Geth only have Atlas on w5 and those get nuked.

Congrats, q5tyhj. This tip is a bit late so I'll make up for that by choosing a particularly classless one -

I'm definitely going to do White next, and will definitely take this advice (mentioned by others as well) about not being so miserly with my missiles- I just have to decide whether I want to do Cerberus, Geth or Collectors. I'm sort of leaning towards QME vs Geth or Cerberus (because I love that guy, and he dominates those factions... also, f$#% banshees), but I also want to do a GI plat solo, because, well, GI.

I never bring a secondary with Venom. Atlas are the only PITA and Geth only have Atlas on w5 and those get nuked.

Fair enough. I suppose its not really necessary with how slow Atlases and Primes are compared to Banshees, making them waaaaay easier to save for last.
