My Xbox 360 seems to have randomly stopped working. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

I wasn't having any problems with it before (it's about 6 years old), and in the 20 minutes today that I tried to play a game, it started making loud static noises and the game froze with a lot of vertical white lines across the screen. After the second time this happened, when I tried to turn the system back on, nothing would show up on screen and instead of the usual ring of green lights, the top left and two bottom lights were red (with the top right light not on at all). The console doesn't respond to controller commands anymore either.

So, is this RROD? Is there anything I can try that might fix it?

Update:

My Xbox 360 has been repaired and is now in perfect working condition! Thanks again to everyone for their advice and encouragement.

Not much you can do, you can just send it to Microsoft (i'm told they have good costumer service), or your local game store to get it fixed. After that, this usually happens when the console overheats and one of its components has melted - So once it's fixed, you might want to put it in a warmer/colder place, somewhere with air condicioner or something like that.

Wow, the components can melt? I don't play for too long at a time, usually around an hour or two, and I don't leave it plugged in after I've finished playing. Have they been known to have a delayed reaction like this to overheating? My air conditioners broke last summer, so there was a week or two when the Xbox 360 would have been in an 80+ degree room for several hours during those days before it was fixed, but that was... I guess 8 months ago.

You got a RROD alright.

It has either overheated or there is a hardware failure, Since you have a 2008 model I can't rule out one or the other. (Elites were better than original, but could still Red Ring, but Slims are awesome because they hardly ever have that problem)

But I wouldn't suggest the Towel Trick, as that could burn down your house. Let it sit overnight to cool down, and if it doesn't work after that then, yeah, you got a Lemon on your hands, so it's best just to replace it. Or get it fixed I guess, but I've never had any luck with getting my 360s fixed in the past (I think I've gone through 3-4...yet I've had the same PS3 since 2009, go figure)

Thanks, I'll try it again in the morning. Definitely won't do anything that could burn down the house. (I've never heard of the towel trick. Sounds dangerous.)

I don't remember the exact year I got it, but 6 years ago seems about right. It's a black Elite, 120 GB. This is the first game system I've had any problems with, so it was really surprising.

Yeah, I figured it was an Elite.

They have less of a chance of Red Ringing then the original model did, but they were still prone to it. 2 of those 4 I had were Elites, and One Red Ringed, the other I gave to a friend when I got my Halo Reach 360 Slim which is my current one.

Slims rarely have a red ring problem, but it comes from overheating and not significant Hardware problems. And they auto-switch off so they don't melt something important. Took Microsoft long enough to figure that out lol. Only 5 years.

Like I said, let it cool off, then go from there. Best of luck man.

Keep the vents clear, 6 inches minimum

The early 360 models did not have proper ventilation, which is why Microsoft added DEM FANS to the Xbox One.

Thanks again. Hopefully this one can be fixed, but if not then I'll check out the Slim. It would be quite some time before I could afford a replacement though, so I'd like to save this one.

Okay, will do. Is it best to keep it upright or on its side?

There are loads of videos on repairs you can make, should you wish to attempt to fix it yourself. It's already broken, so there is little need to worry about whether of not you'll break it. One of my favourite YouTube channels is a guy that fixes consoles and mucks around with electronics.
Anyways, here is the URL for the first of a multi-part repair. May or may not help you, depending (mostly) on your error code.

Xbox 360 is currently unplugged from everything and lying on its side on a wire rack (for cooling food, so maybe it'll work well for game consoles too) with plenty of space around the vents. It feels cool to the touch, so hopefully that's a good sign. No chance it would be a fire hazard at this point, right?

@MoonSpot: Oh, I wouldn't try fixing it myself. I have no tech skill. By error code, do you mean the ring of lights - color, which ones are on and off, etc. - or something else? Last time I tried, it wouldn't turn on to give any other info.

Check the error code. Send it to MS if you want it fixed. If not, and you still want a 360, attempt fixing it yourself or purchase a new one as they are running for much cheaper these days. If you've got money or save some up, you could get an X1, but thats brand new with a MUCH smaller library of games. Best bet(this coming from someone with a 360 and X1) is to get a 360 Slim like I have. Extremely quiet and lasts forever.

The video I posted shows you how to find the (potentially) more specific error code. However, since you're not going to attempt to repair it, there's no point in worrying about it. As prince said, 360s are fairly inexpensive. Buy a new one.

@ObserverStatus: Exactly, the same three lights and nothing displayed on the screen.

If it still doesn't work when I check it again in the morning, I'll definitely give Microsoft a call - I've already located the booklet with their number. I really hope they would be able to fix the one I have, and that it wouldn't cost too much. I don't exactly have the money to spend on a new game system (if I did, I'd have bought a PS4 by now) so any replacement would have to wait, and in that case the Slim does sound best if there haven't been any problems with it yet.

Update: I found a local game shop with experience fixing the red ring problem and very reasonable prices, so if all goes well my Xbox 360 should be repaired in about a week.  :) And they said my saves should probably be okay too.

Thanks again for all the help, guys.

Like you my 360 is six years old and I got the three rings shown above about two weeks ago.

Its had a good running, but even if I repair it I think it would only be a matter of time before it goes again.  I will just buy a new one on payday I think.

Wow, that's some coincidence. Was yours an Elite too?

Man, 360 Elites are tanks when it comes to lasting a long time. S Models more so, apparently. X1's should too with all the vents.

Solid Snake could fit in them if he'd jump ship.

You got the RRoD? Here's how to fix it!

Step 1. Find a hammer. Any hammer will work as long as you can hit things with it.

Step 2. Find a dumpster that is large enough for you to fix the Xbox.

Step 3. Get a 9mm pistol and keep it handy.

Step 4. Set Xbox inside the dumpster.

Step 5. Take hammer and hit it until the Xbox is all smashed up into pieces.

Step 6. Take 9mm pistol and shoot the pieces.

Step 7. Stomp on the pieces.

Step 8. Shoot the pieces even more.

Step 9. Fill the dumpster with garbage.

Step 10. Let the garbage guy empty the dumpster and take the crap to the local landfill.

You have successfully fixed your Xbox.

@ LPPrince:

Now I'm curious if six years is the normal lifespan before they just give out and need to be repaired. My Elite survived a few things in perfect working condition, so when this happened out of nowhere after I had only been playing for a few minutes, it really came as a shock.

I wouldn't know what the average is for Elites but its certainly far longer lasting than the original 360s were because they went ahead fixing their problems. My Elite model I gave to my stepbrother a couple years ago still works. I gave him that for free when I bought myself the 360S.

That's nice. I still have all of my original game systems, and normally don't buy the upgraded versions. The only time I did is the GBA and GBA SP many years ago, because the SP's flip screen makes it easier to carry in a pocket.

It would be interesting to see the stats though. I've heard some electronics are only expected to last a certain amount of years.

Well, with 360s you should be good to go with Elite models and all those made afterward. Especially X1 with its venting freaking everywhere.
