Well, with 360s you should be good to go with Elite models and all those made afterward. Especially X1 with its venting freaking everywhere.

Hopefully when mine is repaired, there won't be anymore problems. The place I brought it to said they've fixed red rings many times before, so I'm feeling good about its chances.  ^_^

I won't be getting the X1 for other reasons (online connection requirements), but I agree the extra vents were a good move. I had a laptop with that problem, didn't have it too long before it overheated even with an extra vent attachment underneath. I noticed my 360's vents were kind of poorly placed too, right on the bottom surface when it's standing vertically. Maybe when I get it back I'll have to keep it on its side.

The X1 has no online connection requirement. Also, ALWAYS keep a console on its side. I don't know why Sony advertised the PS4 as being able to be kept vertically while simultaneously saying its not advisable.

It requires one at set-up and for updates, right? I keep my consoles offline all the time, so if I can't do that with a game/console, then it's just not for me.

The way gaming is going, you're gonna wanna start. I believe both X1 and PS4 require one time online start up and online for updates. I'm always online anyway so I never really notice these things. I'm basically the opposite of you, hahaha.

From what I've read, PS4 doesn't require it. Not that I can afford one right now anyway.

If gaming ever does completely go in that direction, then I'll just stick with the generations I have and the huge backlog of games that's enough to last a lifetime already. I'm still finding some old classics that I missed when they came out. Just started my first playthrough of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on N64 this month.

It's my understanding that the PS4 can technically play games right out of the box without ever connecting to the internet ( so I hear anyway, I don't know anyone who hasn't connected thier PS4 to the net ) but it is strongly recommended that you download the day one patch since it isn't capable of doing anything else without it ( and most PS4 launch title require a day one patch as well ). The Xbox One needs to be connected to the internet to download the day one patch, without this patch it's just a brick.

Sorry to hear about your Xbox 360. I think we've all been there at one point and stage. I cried like a baby when my first 360 died. Hopefully the guys at your game store can repair it.

I was the same way when I saw the red ring. Actually, my mom saw it first when I was behind the Xbox 360 plugging it back in after the second static failure. I wanted to try out another game to see what was glitching, the game or the console, and then she asks if the lights are supposed to be red. "No, no, no! They call that the red ring of death!"  :crying: If it comes back in working condition, I will honor its repair with another Mass Effect playthrough.

As for PS4, this article gives two options - download it to a USB flash drive first, or just call to have a disc sent in the mail. I'll probably use the second option if I'm worried about my lack of tech skill messing things up, but there are instructions here in case I need to use them. Or maybe it'll end up pre-installed on the next wave of PS4s by the time I can afford one.

Also, ALWAYS keep a console on its side. I don't know why Sony advertised the PS4 as being able to be kept vertically while simultaneously saying its not advisable.

I must have missed this earlier. Now I'll have to get creative with my console placement to make them fit on their sides on limited surface space. Does that advice go for PS2 as well, or just the newer consoles?

Okay, I'll be sure to move them before the next time they're used. What about the Wii though? It actually comes with a base attachment to stand it up... I figured it was meant to be that way.

So that's how to judge it. Thanks. Already moved my PS2 on its side.

They should really stop advertising the consoles that way if they don't want them to be stood up. I guess I'm just lucky that this red ring was the only problem I've ever had with any of them.

Seriously?

****, my PS3 and my PS4 are currently in the vertical position in my bedroom since there is not enough room to arrange them horizontally. I could stack one on top of the other but I am afraid that would cause over heating issue for what ever console is unfortunate to end up on the bottom.

Every console ever.

When you say it like that it makes perfect sense.

Back in my PS1 and PS2 days, I had them both flat(well, a vertical PS1 would just be silly). I think I had my PS2 vertical a little bit.

In my 360 days, for a time I had it vertical, but then rightfully made sure it was flat.

Now I have an X1, and Microsoft straight up came out and said that you better keep it flat because its not meant to be kept vertical.

I don't have enough space next to my TV to have both my X1 and 360 flat and in use simultaneously, so when I want to use my 360 I'll place it on top of my X1. When I want to use my X1, I'll remove my 360 and put it down somewhere else. /always be mindful of heat, venting, and space

I know that Microsoft recommends that you keep the Xbox One in the Horizontal position and that they have said it is not meant to placed vertically so that's why my Xbox One is the only console in my house in the living room and it is the only console in the horizontal position, it currently hogs all the space under the tv in my living room.

Microsoft acknowledges the xclamps issue or RROD they usually will repair the unit or send you another one. I sent mine back once, got it back worked fine, sold that to buy a newer one with the HDMI port, which once hooked up got the RROD on day 2, took it back to Best Buy, they let me return it as it had been less than 48 hours, used the money from the return; spent an extra $100 bucks for the Elite and I still have it to this day with no issues, it sits below Xbox One in HDMI port 2 on the tele.

If you don't send it back to be repaired I would suggest the elite or heck move up to the xbone.

Edit: I didn't realize it was an elite. Kind of surprised...haha after actually reading the last two pages my info here is kinda useless.

I'll probably have to move my consoles to face sideways in order to fit them on the same tabletop. That's what I did with my PS2, the only one currently in the living room - had to shift the TV a little to allow the PS2 to lay on its side.

@ Lunch Box: The advice is still appreciated.  ^_^

I called Microsoft first and ended up talking to two different people, who each seemed to think there was something different wrong with my 360 and each quoted different prices which seemed kind of high. After that, I checked with the local game shop because I figured a place that sells used consoles might know how to fix them. Their prices were much better too, $50 if they can fix it (which they seem pretty sure they'll be able to do) and only $20 if they can't.

I remember the jokes on BSN after the first pictures of the Xbox One were shown, that those fans are powered by the souls of a thousand airbenders.

Wow, that's some coincidence. Was yours an Elite too?

Actually yeah it was.  Guess these things are prone to fail after a specific time, in this case at about six years :P

My Xbox 360 has been repaired!  :D I just got it back yesterday, played it for an hour and then another hour and a half today, and it's in perfect working condition. My saves are fine as well. I have the console on its side, with a wire rack under it because the bottom side was getting warm up against the table (my laptop is the same way) but it's all good now. Thanks again to everyone for their advice and encouragement.

If you decide to get yours fixed, mine went through a process that they called a "reflow", no new parts needed.
