Mages have really gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to their equipment. DA:O had the most awful looking robe design i've ever seen. DA2 has the same awful looking robes in terrible colour pallets to boot. I don't even know what they were thinking of when it came to Hawke's champion robe, how much steroid did he inject into his arm exactly? Ohhh the headgear, I don't think I need to mention how bad that was. The only robe in the series i've liked so far is Orsino...and it's not even a freaking robe, it's his damn body therefore making it unwearable >_<

It's early days and we need more pics but so far all i've seen is stupid hats and trench coats. It seems all the creativity goes into the Warrior and Rogue for their stuff and then mages gets some weird rags dyed like a rainbow. It would be nice to see some decent looking mage stuff which doesn't look like it belongs to a travelling circus or smuggler.

Traditional robes are absolutely fine, but they have to at least look good AND wearable for the player (looking at you again Orsino).

Some gear like Hawke mage wouldn't be so bad but it has too look more natural, that bulky mess of an arm was...quite something but the robe itself just looked to 'thrown together'. However, the idea of a 'battlemage' robe is cool (armour+robe) but the only real examples of such garments I can think of the Hawke mage and Fugitives Mantel aka tatty, thrown together at the last minute thing and a makeshift chantry robe.

Come on now.

I think this pic kind of sums up why i'm concerned about DA:I's Mage gear.Three_classes_of_the_inquisitor.png

Looks kind of familiar, hmmmmmmmmTrooper_and_smuggler.png

When it comes to robes i'd love something like Orsino (which is the only robe so far in the DA series I've liked)

Oddly enough I also think Star Wars can be used as great inspiration for good mage robe designs. Keep in mind that I say inspiration, directly copying them would look out of place but as a foundation I think they look good.

I think the 'Vow of Pride' robe mod for Dragon age 2 does a great job of mixing a robe with an armour look. While i'd love something like Orsino, something like VoP would be just as good as I think it really captures the essence of a 'battlemage' without resorting to the typical battlemage stuff which looks more like a wanderers tatty garments. So long as there isn't any of that 'fake skirt' type robe. The ones where the skirt is split down the centre or into segments so you can see the characters legs. That really bothers me in robe design for some reason. It just doesn't feel 'mage-like'.2819-4-1306032721.jpg

To other people who have pointed out that the Mage champion's arm isn't that muscled. Have you looked at Hawke in other clothing options? Take the Rogue Champion armour, same character, normal arms. Even that picture I liked above shows Hawke with slimmer arms. The mage warden robes is the same and so it every other outfit except the mage champion.

More robes I think look good

That wasn't steroid abuse. Hawke is just left-handed.

the gameplay trailer has something about the mage colthing you might like

As for clothing in the game, the customization is said to be totally different from the two games, you can actually wear heavy armor as a mage but obviously it will slow you down as well. basically how you dress in inquisition is up to you.

TBH, you'd think mage robes would almost be easier, since it is just clothing, not armor.

Lol. :) Agreed. I'd just like some kind of nice light armor-looking clothing for mages. "But robes make it easier for the wearer to access their magic" NO. SHUSH. Magic is not real. There shouldn't be any "rules" that picky governing it. :P

Maybe if, like, magic required elaborate full-body-and-staff-formed sigils. But even then, chainmail. Unless you're a lightning mage I guess.

Actually I would be more prone to playing mages if I interpretive danced my way through the game.

Agreed. Maybe it's time to experiment with warriors a bit and give mages some more traditional armor  ;) just one at the very least.

In all seriousness though, it seems like we will have more variety this time around. I like what we've seen in the trailer and while funky armor shown on DAI website is not something I would use every day I can see myself giving it a shot once in a while for the heck of it. Who knows what else is out there :P

I liked the robes of unblemished cleanliness that looked like a chantry robe <3 also the ones with fluffy fur I like. I hope we get more style options though in DA:I.

YES. This idea I could get behind. :D Bwahaha.

Or maybe you could wear some simple cotton clothes and then, whenever your LI is around, cast a fire spell and pretend like you didn't burn your clothes off on purpose.

burn all DA:O mage cowls

The Warden robes in DA2 weren't that bad. But of course everything pales in comparison to the anthracite robes, those had to be the most gorgeous garments in all of kirkwall. I'm more concerned about staves. I honestly can't recall a single one I've liked besides maybe parlathan

'Burnin' Love' is required to be the soundtrack for that scene

I am liking the direction of a lot of the concepts for armor this time around. I don't like bulky, heavy armor on mages, even melee mages. I just want some nice, sightly armorer slightly robe-like clothes. Honestly I mostly like the mage outfit shown on the official website. I would just replace the leather and fur shoulder pieces with metal ones, add a chain-mail shirt under the coat, and replace that ridiculous hat with a hood. If what they are saying about customization is accurate then I think it will be possible to really make our gear  look the way we want .

I liked the champion robes but anyway.I hope they do a more armor look to mages.I just hope they also keep clothing options like Varric,Isabella,Sibling(Act 1).I want to look like a badass rogue.I might even rock that feather hat in one of those screenshots.Armor in general needs to look slick & smooth. Some armor need to look bulky though.Have options for everyone. One last thing, make the hoods at least look badass(Assassin's Creed style).I didn't like those stupid cowls.

That explanation is such BS anyway lol. 'OMG this otherworldly, mystical force is so dangerous and UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!...except iron stops it....and steel...leather....pretty much every metal...yeah.'

Maybe the templars should just make mages wear armour, problem solved, no circles required. I'm brilliant.

The mage warden stuff in DA2 is odd to me. The one Bethany and Janeka wears reminds me of something, someone would wear to bake....idk it looks like oven gloves and an apron. Also yes, Parthalan is the ONLY good looking staff in the series.

I think it's the work of the Chantry. They purposefully make mages look awful as a sick form of bigotry.

I liked the Champion and the Grey Warden armour for mages in DA2, it looked quite badass, imo.

In fact, anything will do but DAO robes and cowls.

Also a little concerned over weapons as well. I mean sure, a staff is probably the best weapon for a mage BUUUT, my character is still intelligent, still has HANDS. What is stopping my mage from picking up a dagger, or a sword/greatsword etc.

The constant stream of dress wearing, stick twirling mages is getting old fast.

I loved the Regalia of Weisshaupt from the Legacy DLC. It looked like proper attire for a mage who goes on the kind of adventures and takes on the kind of battles that you do in a Dragon Age game. It had the whole "robes" thing, but it also had bits of armor on it too and looked unique and striking. After putting it on I couldn't imagine ever wearing anything else on my Mage Hawke (note: I keep helmets turned "off"). It may be because there are variations of it that can be worn by Warriors and Rogues too that makes it stand out compared to other DA2 mage gear, but I think it fits best for mages to begin with.

More mage gear like that in Inquisition and I'd be very happy.

This reskin of the Mage Weisshaupt armour is nice, even it I don't feel it has enough of an 'armoured' look, but that is the fault of the Bioware model not the mod. Some armoured should plate and boots would make it perfect.3017-1-1313989178.jpg

Hey, out of the 3 champion armors, the mage one is truly badass, I LOVE it. Warriors, and specially rogues, got the short end of the stick

And about the left arm of hawke..well...

That wasn't steroid abuse. Hawke is just left-handed.

this.

I hope we get something similar to the mage champion armor on inquisition.

But yeah, I HATE that mages get to wear the same skirts over and over on most games (including DAO and DA2). Everytime I see some actual pants, I'm so happy :D

Yeah no the Champion Mage Armor was freaking awesome. The overpumped arm was perhaps the only imperfection in what was otherwise one of my favorite designs for mage gear. I had long since gotten tired of the "mages wear cloth gowns" confinement I see in a lot of places and that armor was a breath of fresh air.

The pic is... troubling.

But at least it's evidence that mages get pants. That's all I have to say. I can handle a lot so long as I have pants. Pants are important. Support the pants.

I prefer the original, to be honest. I definitely do think somemore "Armoured" mage gear is needed, though.

With class specs like Knight enchanter..why we don't get more mages armors? we need moar armors like the champion armor from DA 2. In fact, if they bring it to DA:I , I'll use it the whole game!

DA:O had one good one and DA2 had a lot. Mages were bad ass in DA2, so I see no complaints there for armor since most of the DA2 Warrior armor dlc looked ugly as F*ck! I like the look of the armors in the Inquisition a lot and hope they keep up and or surpass DA2's robes and armor.
