The Mage Champion armor was actually one of the best designed armors in the game. It was reasonably armored, had a cool sharp aesthetic, and amplified Hawke's badassitude and sexiness. I do not approve of your judgement.

Anyway, you are allowed to wear heavy armor in inquisition as a mage. I don't think playing a knight-enchanter in melee with robes makes much sense, so they let us wear what we want.

I, for one, can't wait to make a "paladin"-type armored healer/tank . I was able to do it in DA:O (Arcane Warrior + Spirit Healer) and I can't wait to do it in DA:I since it seems to be possible with the Knight Enchanter specialization.

Just thinking about this is making me ambivalent between having my first character be a sword&shield warrior or a paladin mage. Aaah!

I am more concerned about the combat and dialogue in general. I would take ugly clothes and good general aspects than the other way around.

No floor length dresses please.

It looks like they're heading the right why with robes for Solas:

I hope the shape is something that will be available to the player character as well

Personally I prefer a well crafted long robe to any kind of short one. Having both is good but so far the only mage robe for the player looks like a rogue-ish smuggler. If people like that, that's fine. But some form of long robe need to be included and they have to look nice, not like the awful robes they had in DA:O and 2

What is an example of a nice looking long robe then?

I've seen few floor length mage gowns that I liked.

Mage armour should reflect who made it.  If it's Circle-made it'll probably be robes, and serve to mark out the wearer.  If it's apostate made, it should be plausible as ordinary clothing for ordinary people.  And then you've got elves, both ancient and modern, and chasind shamans and Rivaini seers and even Qunari Saarebas I guess.

To the OP, I would think if you expected a Dev to take your opinions into consideration I would reccomend not ripping on their hard work and criticize. Instead post examples or describe what you'd like to see. Three sentences in and your post is one giant "nope".

Would it have killed you to look though the whole thread before making a post that has been answered twice already?

Your initial post was so atrocious I thought I'd point it out. That's the first thing everyone else is going to see. Maybe you should edit it so you don't sound like you are trolling- as that's how it reads.

I think a trolling post would be more like 'Da magix stoof sux balz, plez change'

I like what we've seen so far. Just plain old robes are kinda dull, but incorporating trench-coat/pants combos and such is neat. I don't care for the heavy armor personally, but I don't mind it. Huge advocate of mage pants, though. I thought some of the DA2 armors were actually pretty cool, though some were awful--I hated the more traditional robe-y ones.

I want outfits like Anders's and Merrill's, though--they struck the ideal balance imo.

Yeah, I like that they're incorporating more 'real clothes' type stuff into the mage armor. I just hope it isn't ALL pants+coat. Throw a couple dresses my way, even if they're primarily tied-up skirts over leggings for that authentic medieval farmwife practicality.

I think the 'Vow of Pride' robe mod for Dragon age 2 does a great job of mixing a robe with an armour look. While i'd love something like Orsino, something like VoP would be just as good as I think it really captures the essence of a 'battlemage' without resorting to the typical battlemage stuff which looks more like a wanderers tatty garments. So long as there isn't any of that 'fake skirt' type robe. The ones where the skirt is split down the centre so you can see the characters legs. So some reason that really bothers me in robe design.2819-4-1306032721.jpg

To other people who have pointed out that the Mage champion's arm isn't that muscled. Have you looked at Hawke in other clothing options? Take the Rogue Champion armour, same character, normal arms. Even that picture I licked above shows Hawke with slimmer arms. The mage warden robes is the same.

I like robes just because I like robe-style clothing (whether it be medieval or The Matrix-style overcoats).  Upon thinking upon this, though, why are mages restricted to robes?  I can see if clothing is infused with an enchantment, you'd want to wear it.  But what in a robe makes a mage more powerful in its mageyness?  Warriors are walking plates because they need to protect themselves from melee.  Rogues, by nature, are sneaky and agile, and therefore less built and need lighter armor and armor that makes them more stealthy and agile.  But enough armor so they don't become meat shields.  Mages.... what does flimsy cloth protect them from, other than the lack of armor making them to use their magic-waving arms/hands better?  It's sort of a fashion-statement, moreso.  I assume the Circle Mages have their traditional "uniforms".  Apostates don't want to attract attention, so why would they wear robes?  They should wear armor that is light enough for their generally more scrawnier forms and give them enough movement for casting.  If anything, they should have clothing similar to rogues.  Enough protection but doen't bog them down.

That being said, I like robes.  So my mage will wear robes.  Make them stylish, though.  :)

The problem so far with the floor length robes is that they all look the same, just color palette swaps.

Also, could you imagine trying to battle in one of those things?  Constantly tripping on the hem and lighting the sleeves on fire.

I think that armour looks nice as an armour, no doubt. But idk if i'd want my own mage wearing something like that. Even that 'Flames of the Inquisition armour' looks fantastic but is way to warrior-like for my mage type characters.

Btw, that top pic looks like Hawke is wearing Hubcaps for a belt.

Mages have really gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to their equipment. DA:O had the most awful looking robe design i've ever seen. DA2 has the same awful looking robes in terrible colour pallets to boot. I don't even know what they were thinking of when it came to Hawke's champion robe, how much steroid did he inject into his arm exactly? Ohhh the headgear, I don't think I need to mention how bad that was. The only robe in the series i've liked so far is Orsino...and it's not even a freaking robe, it's his damn body therefore making it unwearable >_<

It's early days and we need more pics but so far all i've seen is stupid hats and trench coats. It seems all the creativity goes into the Warrior and Rogue for their stuff and then mages gets some weird rags dyed like a rainbow. It would be nice to see some decent looking mage stuff which doesn't look like it belongs to a travelling circus or smuggler.

Traditional robes are absolutely fine, but they have to at least look good AND wearable for the player (looking at you again Orsino).

Some gear like Hawke mage wouldn't be so bad but it has too look more natural, that bulky mess of an arm was...quite something but the robe itself just looked to 'thrown together'. However, the idea of a 'battlemage' robe is cool (armour+robe) but the only real examples of such garments I can think of the Hawke mage and Fugitives Mantel aka tatty, thrown together at the last minute thing and a makeshift chantry robe.

Come on now.

I think this pic kind of sums up why i'm concerned about DA:I's Mage gear.Three_classes_of_the_inquisitor.png

Looks kind of familiar, hmmmmmmmmTrooper_and_smuggler.png

When it comes to robes i'd love something like Orsino (which is the only robe so far in the DA series I've liked)

Agreed, I think Orsino looks really good on Hawke and is in general a really, really nice robe design. Hopefully we'll be seeing more of those in Inquisition.

I added more example to the first page. Having my fingers crosses that there will be good traditional robes for the Inquisition.
