Agreed, I think Orsino looks really good on Hawke and is in general a really, really nice robe design. Hopefully we'll be seeing more of those in Inquisition.

oh i love that cow boy mage outfit hell yeah.

I'm actually just really hoping for non-chapeau hats. It looks well redicilous, even if it fits Orleasian fashion and I couldn't imagine a female wearing something like that.

/still rooting for tiaras and coronets

Personally I'd love to see articles that are more in line with the Tevinter fashion shown in World of Thedas. Or the more unique/stylised DLC robes in DA2, those are superb.

I'm not against full length robes, but I prefer if they look more like overcoats. Maybe also with a breastplate worn over the top like the Disciples of Khaine from Warhammer: AOR.

I like robes with some shape to them. In DAO the only robes I really cared for were the Tevinter ones. I felt the circle mage robes were kind of ugly and shapeless.

The robes were...okay in DA2. The longer ones were certainly better looking than they were in DAO but I wasn't particularly crazy about them.

I'm not opposed to full length robes as long as they're not monkish looking.

If I could pick though I'd like some really pimped out robes that looked more like fancy dress wear than anything else.

I like my mages to look impractical.

tbh they were just stuff i found on google with qualities that I like, I'm not saying I want those exact outfits in game, just stuff with that kind of style.

i don't want all the mage armours to actually look like armour.

Mages have really gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to their equipment. DA:O had the most awful looking robe design i've ever seen. DA2 has the same awful looking robes in terrible colour pallets to boot. I don't even know what they were thinking of when it came to Hawke's champion robe, how much steroid did he inject into his arm exactly? Ohhh the headgear, I don't think I need to mention how bad that was. The only robe in the series i've liked so far is Orsino...and it's not even a freaking robe, it's his damn body therefore making it unwearable >_<

It's early days and we need more pics but so far all i've seen is stupid hats and trench coats. It seems all the creativity goes into the Warrior and Rogue for their stuff and then mages gets some weird rags dyed like a rainbow. It would be nice to see some decent looking mage stuff which doesn't look like it belongs to a travelling circus or smuggler.

Traditional robes are absolutely fine, but they have to at least look good AND wearable for the player (looking at you again Orsino).

Some gear like Hawke mage wouldn't be so bad but it has too look more natural, that bulky mess of an arm was...quite something but the robe itself just looked to 'thrown together'. However, the idea of a 'battlemage' robe is cool (armour+robe) but the only real examples of such garments I can think of the Hawke mage and Fugitives Mantel aka tatty, thrown together at the last minute thing and a makeshift chantry robe.

I agree with you, although I do not play much with mages, I do not want to devalue the work of the creative team of DA, but the mages equipment are very ugly ...

I think pretty much, covers, coats, cloaks and why not use chainmail together these pieces, wizards, witches and witchs has its mystic and mysterious side, and not be packed as a sausage ...

I must confess that I wasn't too keen on the long robe look for the mages in DAO and DA2.  If anything, I prefered to put my mage protagonists in something more practical, so I ended up using the more rogue type armour for my Xbox play throughs. That's why I love the PC version of DAO, because of the mods.  In particular I do like the Grey Warden outfit that was taken from DA2 and modded for DAO -

Skyrim had some cool gear to wear.

The problem I always had with the robes in DA:O and DAII wasn't the fact that they were robes so much as they went STRAIGHT to the ground.  So one, even when walking normally you could start stepping on the hem but could you imagine wearing something like that in battle?  Lighting your sleeves on fire and getting the robe all torn up and junk.

So, all in all I really enjoyed some of the non traditional armor gear you could get in Skyrim:

Funny enough, I never liked Skyrim's robes. I guess they are practical given the weather there but they felt less mage-like and more wandering traveller.

The robes in DAO were painful to watch, I can give you that.

Some robes in DA2 were okay. Some I liked better. The Legacy DLC armor looked cool but I didn't like the coloring. Shame that you didn't have in-game dyes.

I really don't like that cowboy look which we had a preview off... Seems a bit too goofy and would suit a bard better in my eyes. Though I have to say, that metal helmet doesn't look good on a rogue. Though, the helmet doesn't look that good in my eyes... Perhaps it's the texture they use? Seems too bland. Sure, not all armors should be shiny or colorful but I think that helmet needs a little bit of shiny or different shade of gray.

Alas, I'm not happy with the rest of the outfit either. Though it might be because of the character's face. Overall the outfit looks good but not for a mage. It looks bard-y. I also prefer long robes with high details or robe/pants combination, like the OP linked on the second page IIRC.

Other robes which I like is from Dark Souls:

Perhaps the face could be shown partly instead of being totally hidden, add some color here and there and it would be perfect! Looks cool like that too.

This got nice little details, the hood has a mask and I guess it can live without it. The robe part is long enough, doesn't look silly.

Of course direct copying isn't good but those are simple and good looking.

I could imagine a Knight Enchanters (or whatever it was) using armor similar to this, and why not regular warriors too:

(The picture is quite large, that's why I left a link)

Though Artorias is pretty iconical character in Dark Souls, it's probably better to leave it at there.

On a side note, I did enjoy the Champion mage armor. It looked good in my eyes.

Yeah no the Champion Mage Armor was freaking awesome. The overpumped arm was perhaps the only imperfection in what was otherwise one of my favorite designs for mage gear. I had long since gotten tired of the "mages wear cloth gowns" confinement I see in a lot of places and that armor was a breath of fresh air.

The pic is... troubling.

But at least it's evidence that mages get pants. That's all I have to say. I can handle a lot so long as I have pants. Pants are important. Support the pants.

I'm with you.

Something I really liked in TERA:

yOz2.jpg

Coat+trousers=pure win (for me).

Hope those DAO mage-hats are history now...it was something so awful that my mages never wear anything in their heads. Robes were not a sight for sore eyes either. DA2 did it at least somewhat better.

I think the 'Vow of Pride' robe mod for Dragon age 2 does a great job of mixing a robe with an armour look. While i'd love something like Orsino, something like VoP would be just as good as I think it really captures the essence of a 'battlemage' without resorting to the typical battlemage stuff which looks more like a wanderers tatty garments. So long as there isn't any of that 'fake skirt' type robe. The ones where the skirt is split down the centre or into segments so you can see the characters legs. That really bothers me in robe design for some reason. It just doesn't feel 'mage-like'.

I think you missed the point of alot of those robes. Since outside of tevinter being a non-circle mage is not something you advertise there are only 2 groups that would make 'mage armor. The first is the chantry for circle mages. as for circle mage stuff. from a lore perspective it makes complete sense for them to have robes that identify them as mages and part of the circle. The other group that would make mage clothes is tevinter and we only really see that in DA2. I for one really like some of the mage armors I have seen. They are don't look tattered or bad they just look like some one took mismatched pieces of armor to make somethign that works for a mage instead of the warriors the pieces were made for. Now as for the split skirt stuff not being very mage like That is just ridiculous. Just because your a mage doesn't meant you love running around in frilly robes and twirling around an eight foot staff. For my mage I want molded leather armor and chainmail with a hood and segmented leg pieces to make it my own. I want a sword staff made of black wood with a glowing orb on one end and a three foot blade on the other. There is no more circle people, we don't have to look like the chantrys bitches anymore. I really like the one mage armor they have shown for DA:I. Personally I think your just whining because they havn't had the exact armor that exemplifies what a mage looks like. They have talked about how many different armor and clothes there will be. I am confident they will have plenty of set to make most people happy. As for those who still aren't happy. It's just an outfit and they can't please everyone so just calm down and enjoy the game.
