I agree with the OP. I do like the companion specific robes that the other posters mentioned (except I use the Sacred Ashes robes mod for Morrigan), but overall the basic mage robes could go for an update.
Concerns over mage gear.

sigh as i said do not limit mages to robes why?? because it then opens up all other armor in the game thus levitating the problem of "oh i dont like these robes but im stuck with them"
There was plenty designs in DA2 that was either leather or heavy that i liked the look of but because of the antiquated system that is "mage needs to wear a robe" i couldnt wear them, thus the second part of my statement
so i say again tri-class and armor restrictions are that restrictions and for me rpg should be moving away from it all to give ppl more freedom and choice in there play throughs
If all armor is open to all characters it makes it more possible you will actually get something you like albeit with perhaps a penalty for wearing, restrict it all an without doubt as your thread has proven there is more a chance of ppl not liking the design
Again as you see the question was perfectly fine in a topic about mage gear but you took offence where there certainly was none found an now we find ourselfs here, so hopefully this explains it, if not well tough

I think mages should have "light armor" (as it was labeled in DA2). These need not be robes. Even the trailer/champion's armor aren't "robes". Among others (like that pirate garb or battlemage chestpiece).

Yay, I use the same mod. It looks nicer and is less booish for the cold climate of Ferelden.

Don't let Games Workshop see the new mage robe design! That is ripped right out of Warhammer.

Wouldn't most good looking armours (especially light and medium ones) look good as mage armour by simply adding a hooded cloak? My first mage will probably be a night enchanter, so I am looking forward to some nice mage armour. Those star wars robes do look pretty sweet if you don't want your mage to be wearing actual armour though.

as much as i agree with the robe problem ; yes i would like something more manly like hawke champion armour, with more steel,something really badass, and not just as a final equipement ;
yet i think am from the few that actually do like the muscles of hawke as a mage .in fact i liked it more as a mage ,i think i've seen what they tried to do in bioware , the official looking hawke is a grown up fierce and manly man ,and its not because he's a mage ,that he need to be skinny. he will have the same muscles a rogue or a warrior hawke gonna have and personaly and honeslly i liked the contrast of how a mage can look so powerful and not just with his gears !! am gonna say i loved it yes !!!
am hoping to see more muscled mages around inquisition !

I think we will get both robes and pants in the game, there has to be more than one outfit. Perhaps something half and half like the champions robe.
And I for one hope that the "hide helmet" option from DA2 returns.
All the goodness, none of the ugly!

It's amazing how good the hide helmet function worked in DA2 and completely failed in ME3. But yes, hide helmet from DA2 needs to be back.
