Some of you may remember my first topic, where I inquired as to how far people roleplay their Shepards. I was curious to see how many others create more malleable Shepards, as opposed to simply playing a pure paragon or a pure renegade (i.e. a ruthless Shepard who becomes more compassionate as the story intensifies, or a kind Shepard that reacts violently to racism). This topic is in the same vein.
Now, we know that Bioware has implemented a lot of new mechanics as well as refining some old in order to increase immersion and allow us greater roleplaying opportunities. They've added the new Interrupt system, condensed Charm and Intimidate to the Persuasion skill, given us many new endings (including at least one where Shepard dies), and of course they're going to throw in the usual delightful Bioware plot twists. But they've also added more subtle mechanics- we have the ability to change our character's class and appearance upon importing an ME1 save file, as well as obtaining additional scars that we can choose to keep or heal. We now have much more in the way of armor customization, though for the sake of this thread I'd like to focus more on the cosmetic side of things than anything stat-related. I'm sure there are more that I've missed (I've been trying to remain as spoiler-free as possible), so if anyone knows of them feel free to mention it.
The Devs have said time and time again that Mass Effect 2 will be darker, grittier, and more dangerous than its precursor. My question to you is:
How will you use these mechanics to embellish/alter your Shepard's personality and physical appearance? Lets assume for the sake of argument that all of these mechanics will be included in Mass Effect 3.
I'll use my characters as an example. (post a picture if you've got one!)
Alandrus Shepard

ME1 Stats:
- Soldier (+Throw)
- Earthborn
- Sole Survivor
Most decisions leaned toward the paragon side of things, though he deals with deep-seated anger issues brought to the surface by PTSD from Akuze. Fights in a similar, though more exaggerated fashion to the Zweihander users of German and Swiss fame, cutting through the front line's defenses, then breaking huge lines through their formations. Very much a brawler.
Changes in ME2:
The events of ME1 have left him with a steel resolve and heavy soul. Since then he has studied the Reapers intensely and trained obsessively, searching for ways to stop them and preparing himself for their return. His cheeks have become gaunt and his eyes sunken in from exhaustion. His eyebrows are permanantly raised slightly, giving him a constant expression of desperation to reflect the tone of his work, and his skin has tanned over the course of his travels. If Bioware allows it, I'd like his beard to have grown larger and more unkept.
He remains a soldier through and through, and he keeps his armor neat and symmetrical, keeping the patterns and coloring of the Colossus armor. He favors large, bulky armor, to the extent that he appears to be a human tank when he enters combat. He always wears a helmet into battle (safety first!).
Changes in ME3:
Should he survive ME2, the events will likely drive him into even more of an obsession with his mission. His already exaggerated features from ME2 will become even moreso, his face becoming almost skeletal in appearance, and his browline becoming low and stern. He'll start balding and once again, if Bioware allows it, his beard will be even larger (I am aware this could make him look like ZZ Top). He'll be much more aggressive in battle, and depending on how Bioware tweaks the classes that may be reflected by making him a Vanguard.
Zaire Shepard

ME1 Stats:
- Infiltrator
- Colonist
- Ruthless
Highly loyal to the Alliance, but understands the value of good business. Something of a mercenary, but with a devout work ethic- he doesn't approve of the double-cross and will complete his objective as efficiently as possible. The shortest path between two points is a straight line, after all. Very reserved and very merciless, he keeps to himself and often disturbs those around him. He seems to have a soft spot for others with his background, though he notices quickly when it surfaces and does his best to supress it. At the center of it all, his biggest focus is on composure- in another topic I mentioned that he's almost the antithesis of Thane. He can't kill up close, he can't look his target in the eyes- because he's too afraid of what he might see, or how he might react. He keeps his scars because they're reminders of when someone got too close.
Changes in ME2:
Very little will have changed since ME1, due to his distancing himself from the emotional impact of things. He'll likely have a few more scars, and he certainly won't make any effort to heal the "renegade scars" that he gains early in the story. His armor will be asymmetrical (if possible), with limited armor on his arms to allow for maximum mobility. The camo pattern and colors will change depending on the mission environment. Like I said- efficient. He'll likely die in ME2, I think. He'll die in a bitter way as a bitter old man, cursing whatever happens to cause his end.
Changes in ME3:
Should he somehow manage to survive ME2, he'll be severely scarred and look many years older. His skin will start to sag in places and his eyes will lose their determination.
Gale Shepard

ME 1 Stats:
- Adept (+Assault Rifles)
- Earthborn
- Ruthless
A powerful biotic from a very young age, Gale never learned much about modesty, or selflessness, or not getting her way. She was like a sick, twisted child all through life- treating people like dolls, destroying what she disliked, pulling wings off of flies biotically, punching mental patients, etc.- until she touched the Prothean beacon. The experience of thousands of years of culture and thousands of years of systematic genocide being forced into her brain shocked her to her core. She was able to exert control over it, due to her extensive experience with biotics, but as the events of ME1 unfolded she found herself increasingly unable to repress the visions. Those visions provided a check for her, and forced her to grow up. By the end of ME1 she still retained her bratty, cruel personality, but in only manifested itself in combat. In the end, she did the right thing and saved the galaxy, at least temporarily.
Changes in ME2:
Her face will have thinned out slightly over the years, and her general expression will be somewhat softer. She's still going through her personality change, so she's very much still the same Gale; just a bit less quick to judge. Her armor will be sleek and form-fitting as ever, but she's certainly going to play around with colors and small pieces to make herself more menacing. She'll continue her "path towards elightenment" during ME2, but I have a feeling the nature of the Collectors might make her revert a bit as she builds up a vendetta against them. She'll also have a violent reaction to the renegade scars, as they break her feeling of invincibility, and obsessively research how to rid herself of them.
I've been debating whether or not she should change classes. I think it would fit if she started a change towards a more passive class, from Adept to Sentinel to Engineer, but at the same time I'm not sure if she'd become less of a passive person, and Vanguard is simply too aggressive for her. Ideally, she'd be a Sentinel with most of her biotic powers remaining, but I'm unsure as to how much freedom with class-based abilites Bioware has given us. Most likely, she'll remain an Adept in ME2 and become a Sentinel in ME3.
I've also been trying to figure out how to explain the lack of Biotic Barrier, seeing as it's a key skill that made her who she is. I think, for now, I'm going to run with the idea that since she's a more open person, that's reflected in her decision to stop using Barrier. We'll see.
Changes in ME3:
Because so much of Gale's personality lies in what she does with her supernatural abilities, I'm not sure what she'd be like in ME3. I think she'd continue getting slimmer and softer, but I'm sure she'll be just as aggressive as ever. My end goal is for her to be a much kinder person with less regard for her "invincibility." I want her to epitomize the change from reckless, dangerous child to kind, old wise woman. I'm hoping Bioware makes that possible, but hey- there's always fanart.
Your turn!
