there were so many people that achieved a high level of play over this games lifespan.  Definitely too many to determine who is the best.  Having played with a majority of the people considered top tier on Xbox, I can confidently say it would be impossible to pinpoint one individual that clearly dominates the rest.

Lots of excellent players on PC to take names. I haven't played with some of the earlier players, but the ones I've played with are all pretty nice people.

I realize I have not actually responded to the question of who are the best players, not based on N7 or challenge points. Because I have played through all of the (relevant) versions of this game, I can offer input on all platforms: PC, Xbox, and PS3.
 
PC: Heldarion
 
Possibly the best player of every platform. Heldarion is a total monster.
Honorable mentions: razrblack, Ohnenick, kouzrah
 
Xbox: Max Dmian
 
Too good. Kind of inhumanly good. Has spurred several rumors that he has multiple accounts to mess with us.

Huge buttface, but totally great at this game.

I had understood (though it wasn't clearly said in your post), but it's not necessarily needed to play with someone to know how good he is.

It's tough to judge who the very best players are without playing with them often.  I do remember some particularly awesome games by people though.  I recall a game on FB Ghost with Leland Gaunt when the Venom 1st game in vogue and he was bouncing the enemy all over the friggin map.  Had a game on Vancouver in which mega beast was playing a strictly melee AIU and he just cleaned up.  Just a ton of great players out there though. 

 

I have to say the games I really like is when I get some person who doesn't appear to be a bsner who I've never seen around that is just a killer player.

I agree with this.  I've played with a reasonable number of good scorers who I did not consider to be good players.

I'd add Leland and kaxas too, actually, but I feel like the xbox list was getting too long. Maybe I'll have to boot some people, because Leland and kaxas truly are great players. I've duo'd with them both a few times and they made the experience very easy and enjoyable considering how new my manifest was.
