I am hoping we run into him! I wounder what he will look like in the game though?? hmmm (besides as a wolf lol) Perhaps he is one of the agents of chaos we have to put down? It should be interesting to say the least.

Fen'Harel = Loki

      Or

Fen'Harel = the ultimate troll

Or BOTH lol

I gotta say, there are some strong parallels between Fen'Harel and Loki the Trickster God. But I don't think he's the Maker, Merrill said he was "...kin to the creators." He got tired of their battle and trapped them in their realms. I think, if anything, Fen'Harel is an agent of the Maker. But that's just my interpretation.

I think with the Breach opening a portal from the Fade to Thedas that we might interact a little with the Creators, but i have no evidence other that the fact the Fade is considered a sacred place where the Creators are presently (i think), just think it could be cool, i guess we'll find out come October.

Do you mean Marvel Loki or real Loki?

Real Loki would be interesting.

I'd say as far as Norse mythology is concerned,I see Fen'Harel being more like the equivalent of both Loki and Fenrir(his son).These two figures play a major role in Ragnarok(fate of the gods in old Norse)which, is pretty much the end of the "old"world (as it's supposed to resurface and be repopulated) in Norse mythology.

Who knows,maybe Fen'Harel will play a role in the events of Inquisition as well,after all I think he was mentioned in TME for a reason.Although this is pretty much speculation, since I can't possibly know whether the writers were indeed particularly inspired by Norse mythology as far as Fen'Harel is concerned and even if they were,I couldn't predict the way they'd want the story to evolve either.

Loki, Cocopele, Coyote, Ananzi, early non-Manichean versions of Lucifer; you've seen one trickster god, you've seen 'em all.

When I think of Loki, I think of god-like creature who takes the form of a horse then gets raped by a stallion (didn't this produce Odin's steed?).

That's not exactly what i think of when i think of a fox trickster god.

loki is a good comparison, both the marvel and norse versions; but really fen'harel is mostly a generic trickster trope.  playing every angle to benefit himself, and those he protects, or manipulates.

tricksters are the best gods though, so much more colorful, and amoral.

the lokis are good examples in classical mythology (yes plural), or even a good written John Constantine (yes i know, he isn't a god, but the trop remains); or a great private detective setting all of his suspects against one another.

fen'harel is there to change the world, but we do not know for what reason.

sorry if this makes no sense, i just woke up

Huh... I can't say I've heard that particular myth.  Any reason why he couldn't just shapeshift into something else?  Assuming this is even legit, obviously...

And as for the topic... I guess they're pretty similar.  When I saw this topic, though, I actually started wondering if there's any proof that the elven gods exist.  People always put the Maker under a microscope, but not the Creators for some reason... If there was some evidence that the Creators were real, that would explain it, but I don't remember anything like that.

Holy thread necro!

Interestingly enough, near the beginning it says Loki is the father of "the wolf Fenrir," which sounds a bit like Fen'Harel.

Coyote is not really a trickster, especially not really in a blanket statement like that. In the tradition of my people, he's be closer to a creator god than a trickster god. In fact when Christians tried to convert my people, they used Coyote as a synonym for Jesus, and I don't think Jesus is considered a trickster, for most people.

Edit: I realize this post I am quoting is old... but I couldn't let that misinformed statement slide....

Growing up, in the mythologies I came across my impression was that it was consensual, and deliberately done to create Sleipnir?

And after the destruction of Arlathan, when the gods could no longer hear our prayers, it is said that Fen'Harel spent centuries in a far corner of the earth, giggling madly and hugging himself in glee.

I like his style.

I definitely did not get the same impression, but it could be you're right.

Being a polytheist myself, albit not an Asatruar, the thing to remember is that there is no canon for the myths. Myths are stories often told by poets, and there are often different versions. As a polytheist though, the fact that there are different versions is not really a cause for concern. There isn't really any need to get everything written down and exactly 100% right.

Side note: mythology was not all that there was to the ancient polytheistic religions.

As for Fen'harel, he is a trickster wolf yes, but is he like loki? well the only myth we have of the dread wolf is that he locks the gods away. LIkely he is a typical trickster deity though. Hopefully Inquistion will give us more information.

He's Loki only to the Elves.

To the Norse, he's Shor (much like Thor).

Cool twist on the old theme. Both Thor and Loki, depending on who you ask.
