I believe Celene is the only viable candidate right now, as all other contenders have been killed but Gaspard. It'd have to be some other noble.
Well, random noble it is.

True. I want anyone else but them. I think it would be great to give it back to the Elves. Wasn't that their original homeland?
You wan to give all of Orlais back to elves? Pretty sure that's not happening. The elves original homeland was all of Thedas. You can't really give it back to them.
The key word is trust. You have already been lied to for decades. It is not like you can read minds. It may also be too painful for Briala seeing that she may have loved her parent. I wouldn't advise anyone to do this to a love one ever.
Briala was so good at reading Celenes actions and emotions that she could often tell what she was thinking and whether she was lying or not.
What I found most heart-wrenching was that Celene did genuinely plan to make Briala a lady and support the elves when she got back, just as she had promised, and Briala knew that.

Well, the entire continent was at one point. But I don't want to punish Orlesians for what the nobility does. Heck, most of the commoners hate them as much as non-Orlesians do.
Well, random noble it is.
But...what if it's another Chevalier?
I guess Orlais burns to the ground then. Except for maybe the Palace. I'd like to sit on that throne.

Nope. Nevarra would be knocking on the door very soon and the elves cannot afford another war.

Then the first runner up will take their place, and so on and so forth.
1- You talk like Briala was a trophy, like it was part of some private joke. Celene never wanted any harm to come to her, and tried to save her. Nobody is denying what happened to her parents was wrong, but acting like them falling in love was part of some evil scheme is reading into the text stuff that wans't there (especially considering half the problems celen runs into in the book are a dircet result of her being in love with Briala.)
2- HOW? How are you going to kill your rival? You have no support structure, they are actively coming for you and they know where you are. Do tell how you, a 16 year old are going to do this with no one to help you?
1: Were I to do what Celene did, which I wouldn't, and I proceeded to fall in love with Briala, I would like to think that I would have enough human decency to feel enough guilt over what I had done to her that I wouldn't be able to live with myself letting her be with me. I'd send her away, I'd break her heart if I had to, but that would still be kinder than what Celene did.
2: With a knife, probably.
Elves are also a disenfranchised minority in everywhere except Halamshiral (where they are a disenfranchised majority), they can't really rule the largest human nation in Thedas.
Then the first runner up will take their place, and so on and so forth.
Keep chopping off heads till we find a good one? That...could take a while.

I got time. It's for a good cause.

You make it sounds like we are doing acts of charity...which I suppose we are in a way.

Murdering everyone until you get someone you like is pr standard for succession crises, tbh.
Celene and Briala together would definitely unstoppable, as much as I love Celene and want her to remain Empress, I worry how she'd be without her.
She'll be dry, like the dessert without rain.
I'm personally hoping C,B and G bite it in the fadespolsion
.

The pattern I see in Celene is do whatever it takes to keep the throne. If that means throw the people you love under the bus, she will do it. This is a no go for most people. It was a one-sided relationship from the beginning. Briala was her spy, servent and lover. Key word servent.
Briala deserves better.
Briala didn't know Celene was going to cross her when she was going to do the assassination job. I believe Briala had enough and she is free.

The Breach explosion in the beginning of the game is at a peace conference for the Mage/Templar War, not the Orlesian Civil War.
So unfortunately, I'm stuck with characters I like being killed.

If Adrian goes up in the blaze, I'll be making popcorn.

Same.
It's almost as if BioWare was like: "Hey! You know what would be funny? Let's really ruin Hinata and Justinia's life. Let's just.. let's just take everything they like and crush it."

Briala was always free. She was not Celenes slave, she could have left whenever she chose to.
If Celene had ever been forced to chose between the Orlesian throne or Briala's life... I honestly think she would have chosen Briala's life over the Throne.

Really? Imo when she had Briala arrested that showed otherwise.

I don't really know that a second-class citizen is ever really 'free' to dump the leader of their country. Like, I don't think Celene would have gone after her but let's still not discount the inherent extreme power imbalance in their relationship.
eta: assuming she dumped her 15 years in and not in the middle of a city-elf-focused play for power
