Nah it rapes Star Wars, the lore and universe is far more well thought out and just.. well, it's just so much better. I've nver found myself so fasinated by a fictional setting haha!

im not a star wars fan boy, just a fan of the OT and a few games, but you cant possibly think that a game thats been out a few years has "far more well thought out" lore than a universe thats been around for 40 years

Yes, why?

Two words:
George Lucas.

I'm a big fan of LOTR and a huge fan of Star Wars, and I wouldn't compare ME to either of them. Personally, I think Mass Effect is Mass Effect. You don't compare Star Wars to, say, Star Trek, unless you want to get shanked, and visa versa. Those two franchises stand on their own. I don't see why Mass Effect is any different. It doesn't have the history behind it as the previously mentioned fanchises, but that doesn't mean too much. It's not the new anything. It's just...Mass Effect. It doesn't have to aspire to anything beyond what it already is, at least in my opinion.

exactly! LOTR, Mass Effect, Star Wars, (and to a lesser extent [its just not my cup o' tea]) Star Trek all have great universes and lore, theyre really not comparable, theyre all different.

I much prefer Mass effects universe and lore to star wars, star wars was too fantasy like for a sci fi, leave that to LOTR which blatently beats Star Wars

No, why?

There's more to Star Wars than the prequels and George Lucas.

Star Wars is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy elements. It's not hard sci-fi, but it is nonetheless. I kind of got sick of the whole series though after the diabolical Phantom Menace.

i said original trilogy. and maybe revenge of the sith, that was pretty good compared to the first two prequels.

and i presume you can make one movie that spawns two sequels, three prequels, a whole host of comics, books, action figures, video games, etc.? lucas is great dude. fcking star wars AND indiana jones? gtfo

You are right. I just find the type of science fiction so much more interesting and believable. So many science fiction IP's have so my holes in them, explaining technology by stating it's just 'futuristic stuff' As someone previously mentioned I find Star Wars to be more of a fantasy setting than sci-fi and do't get my wrong I love Star Wars.

They are individual stories that should not be compared. Leave it.

this thread needs to get locked. i love mass effect but there are too many bioware fanboys on here, if you started this in a star wars forum im sure there'd be a few ME fans there, but you'd all just get overwhelmed by all the facts and logic that prove star wars is one of the best fantasy universes ever

Until BioWare makes languages for each species that you can become fluent in, then no, I won't say it's the new LotR.

So, do you people just harp on series based on their weakest material?

"Yo dawg Star Wars is for ****s, those prequels and that cartoon s*** is for babies"

"Yo dawg, LOTR is lame, it's got fairies and lady-lookin dudes in it, ****s"

"Yo dawg, Star Trek is boring s***, stuff is for ****s"

I suppose that I'm overwhelmed being a fan of those things as well as Mass Effect and there isn't much to say against console-shooter primitives who just love to trash anything they don't know anything about or don't care for.

The extent of the lore in Mass Effect doesn't even scrape the surface of Tolkien's epic legendarium.

Don't get me wrong, I love Mass Effect. Hell, I wouldn't be on these forums if I didn't. But still, Tolkien's legendarium will always remain at the very plateau of epic fantasy, if not story-telling in general.

Comparing it to star wars i would say is pretty dull, as in my opinion the star wars universe does not have the same depth and appeal (atleast not to me personally). Also i find Me a lot more plausible, since this event is set in the "near" future you get the feel that this is what can happen.

Star Wars has a depth beyond the scope of Mass Effect in its infant state.  You obviously aren't interested in Star Wars and don't know much about the EU.

Actually i am a big fan of star wars, but to be i just find the universe...well not booring, but not as interesting as the Me one. Just matter of taste i guess. What enoyed me about star wars is that i never really got interested in any of the races, not like in Me. The reason for this i think is that Me is an RPG, you make choices and everything, you conntact the people you want and ask around. Star Wars however is not an Rpg (yes Kotor i know, and to be honest it was Kotor that really got me into star wars).. All in all i find it hard to explain what attracts me more about Me, but both are good in their own way.

But as people are saying, comparing it is not very easy, as they stand seperate in most ways.

To answer the question in short: No.

ME is a very good franchise, but honestly, it can't keep up with any masterpiece that Tolkien left to us.

it's called the hero's journey or monomyth. probably the best story ouline ever. LOTR, The Odyssey, Star Wars, Harry Potter, even ME borrows from it a little bit.

edit: shepard was gonna be just a normal spectre until everything with saren and the beacon goes wrong, his call to adventure and supernatural aid, though most of the first part is spent in the known universe, simply thinking he has to stop saren and the geth, it's not until virmire that shepard begins crossing from the known into the unknown, learning about the reapers that know one else knows about, he crosses the threshold. the second Mass Effect is more into the unknown, recruiting his helpers and squad in the wild terminus systems

Both LOTR and Star Wars have stood the test of time. They're both extremely popular across multiple generations and have expanded beyond their original format. ME has only been around for a few years. If in ten, twenty years people are still playing, talking about, making movies, making books, making TV shows based on the original triology then you could compare ME to LOTR or Star Wars. ME may have put out books and a comic but that's more of a marketing plan. If books/comics etc are being made well after the triology then it may be in the same upper echelon as LOTR and SW. But very few games, other then Dungeons and Dragons has reached that level of going beyond 'just' a game.
