I never sided with the Templar. What are the conditions of my companions turning on me? Who do I have to fight? I'm thinking Merrill and Anders I guess or is there a way to keep Merrill?

Even if you take the templars' side, you can convince Anders to turn against the mages but only if you have maximum rivalry with him and all of his companion quests completed. Otherwise, he must die. Merrill will side with you no matter what as long as you secure her loyalty by completing all of her associated quests (goes without saying that her romance quest obviously need not apply here). If Bethany is in the Circle, she'll join you against Orsino; she cannot in good conscience defend the person who learned blood magic from her mother's killer. She'll be able to join your party if you prevent Merideth from executing her.

Isabela: She'll stay with you either way. (if she didn't abandon you in Act 2 of course)

Aveline: She will join either side. Unless you rivaled her and did not hit max. Then she just wont go with you at all. ( she literally just...leaves)

Fenris: Max rivalry to side with mages.

Merrill: Max rivalry to side with templars.

Anders: Max rivalry to side with templars.

Varric: Meh

Sebastian: He'll side with you either way.

Carver/Bethany: You wont have to kill them if you join the opposite sides, they'll join you to fight their ..."faction leader" when it happens.

Actually, you'll need to meet two specific conditions to get Merrill to leave the party (siding with the Templars). I played a warrior who blew off Merrill's last couple quests - she still stuck around.

Merrill: Max rivalry to side with templars.

In most cases Merrill will immediately agree to help Hawke who sided with the templars. However, if the following conditions are met simultaneously, she will refuse:

  • Anders is a 100% rival and his Act 3 Questioning Beliefs quest was completed, i.e. he can be potentially persuaded to turn against the mages.
  • Merrill's Act 3 Quest, "Merrill, Friend or Foe?" was not completed.

Coolio, thanks for the correction.

Huh I didn't even get her to turn on me when I did those two...I literally spoke to her twice and she still sided with Hawke.

This. Although I was also max friendship because I wanted to support everything that was bad while at the same time condemning it because the game lets me. Dunno.
