This can be seen as a general question for fantasy in general, so feel free to use broad examples.
Why do we see in most fantasy longed lived races like elves fall in love with humans? Aren't they setting themselves up fro heartbreak doing that? Considering they will most likely out live their partner? Just seems foolish to me that they wouldn't find romantic partners outside their race that will live just as long as they will.
Why do long lived races fall in love with short lived races?

Tragedy is ~Romantic~. Also, elves are no longer particularly long-lived, so it's not really an issue unless they restore Arlathan to original flavor glory.

Are elves long lived?
I don't remember them ever mentioning it, for elves or dwarves.
I remember elves claiming to have been long lived, but I think that's just fairy tales, they probably just stopped practicing blood magic or something and it caused their lives to shorten.

Because... why the hell not? They have the rest of eternity to get over it and try anything they want.

In Dragon Age, all races live about as long. The elves are believed to once have been immortal though.

I don't specifically mean Dragon Age Elves. Merely as an example considering in most fantasy they are shown as long lived.

I think because most of the time even relationships between two short-lived species doesn't last twenty years or more. So, a series of relationships is probably less likely to end in killing your spouse than if you were married to the same person for five hundred years.

Yea, i don't think this conversation actually belongs in a Dragon Age forum. No races live that much longer than humans in the DA universe.

I thought it was because humans are the most...relatable (??) race in any fantasy story so they get all the hot people with magic falling for them for no reason. It's what the people want.

Now I really want a fantasy story where instead of having the ~perfect true love~ you get elves who are just way too stubborn about being married.
Although I think A Discovery of Witches/Shadow of Night handled Ysabeau and Phillipe's relationship when it comes to the reality of multi-century relationships not being monogamous pretty well, even if the rest of the vampire stuff is utter bull.

Mass effect covered this with the asari in ME2, one of them explained offhandedly that marrying a human or salarian was just a short term thing, like the equivalent of dating. Marrying a longer lived species was a more long term affair in their perspective.

They were. Dalish elves canonically do live longer than other elves.

If you were a member of a race which takes at least 5 years to commit to something, that perky, impulsive human is probably going to look pretty exciting.

That's not a fact, that's a preference and a possibility.

Nah, I want to be a hot person with magic.
And you certainly chose the right race in Tera for that. I applaud you.
Also i thought it was mentioned that dwarves have the shortest lifespan...though my memory of Origins dialogue/lore is pretty hazy.

I assumed it was because Humanity's rashness is considered endearing.

Unless you are an eldar. Then you'd think that humans are freaking snails.

I believe the best reason would be the old cliche "tis better to have loved and lost, then to have never loved at all". If you truly love someone you are going to lose them so they can cherish the time they have together. Love is funny like that.
If you truly love someone you might as well die along with them. ![]()

The idea that a relationship is a failure if you're not together for the full duration of your natural lives is the problem. A 2-year relationship isn't that long in the grand scale of a human's total life (say, 70-75 years on average) but that doesn't mean that those 2 years aren't a significant amount of time or significant in themselves.

Depends on the type of relationship. Some people like to share their world with someone, and that sharing doesn't stop until their world is over.
