I was playing origins for the umpteenth time today and started a dalish elf. Something Tamlen said during the origin made me think of this. What if the Golden city was a trick, an idea planted in the minds of the old Tevinter magisters by ancient elven dreamers. The elves manipulate the magisters into opening a portal to what they believe is this wondrous city they see in the fade but actually leads to the sunken Arlathan. Upon their arrival the vengeful elves release their taint weapon and then send the now darkspawnish Cory and company back to destroy their old foe (and every innocent bystander in sight but who cares about that stuff when you've been trapped underground for that how long). If what we have been told about uthenera and the ability of some elves to draw sustenance from the fade is true then I believe that it's possible that some of these ancients could have survived the sinking and plotted their vengeance. This would explain what Cory said about it already being black and it was supposed to be golden. It would also explain what Tamlen said about the city underground full of blackness that turned him into a darkspawn. The fact that the city is now black in the fade I guess could be the dreamers taunting the survivors.

Tl/dr the golden city was a trick by ancient elven dreamers to unleash the taint.

Not a bad idea actually. With the eluvians tainted the magisters then became darkspawns. And according to TME elven dreamers were often killed by thier servants.

With the masters + war with tevinter and eventually the 1st blight these eluvians remained tainted since no body alive knew how to work them anymore.

But not sure darkspawns will seek out the old gods.

I don't like it. Imagine how worse the elves lives are going to get if they are blamed for the Blights too.

A final FU to Tevinter by poisoning their Gods.

I'm currently playing a Dalish elf origin and I recall Tamlen saying something to that effect though I didn't read too much into it at the time.

They deserve nothing really. They are content with being second class citizens and wild outcasts.

Actually, thats right. Now that they are kinda mindless the the last thing they remember and obsessed about was Dumat. Reading the wiki it was suggested that the magisters were already looking for Dumat way before they entered the city.

Which kinda explains the belief that old gods being tainted is also a form of punishment.

In the end it was still mages that did it. Talented elf mage can still become magisters in teventer

No it wasn't. It was again their ancestor's choice. You don't get to choose where you are born.

Elves don't have that freedom. That's like saying the Casteless get to choose what to do with their lives. Both have a set range of options, all of them terrible.

If everything is terrible what's the point of living?

Because they have family and friends?
