Does anyone else have uncontrollable yawning while playing a bunch of UNC missions in a row? I'm fighting thorian creepers for a sidequest and I can't stop it :(. It's especially bad when looking for everything in a map. :o

I don't start yawning, but I definitely feel like it's time to minimize the game for awhile and watch an episode of Star Trek.

No yawning either, but these parts of the game are not my favourite.

 

Still, I always end up doing every assignment in my journal.

Gee, and here I thought everyone agreed that driving around featureless planets in the world's worst designed ground vehicle was what made ME1 the best in the series. (That, or nostalgia. Not sure which.)

I can´t do many unc missions in a row. 3 planets (3 star systems) is my daily limit. Otherwise, it´s as boring as a marathon of first season trek tng episodes.

 

During most of my plays I just do the main-side missions, but not the collectibles, aside from the matriarch´s writings. You know, in order to have verner alive and be able to use his file.

 

Becoming a completionist can be a pain. Another thing I hate are the mini-games. I just skip them, unless I´m on completionist mode. Games were supposed to be fun, not boring.

I see collecting missions as a lack of imagination, a way to pretend the game has more content than it does. I will never buy another Ubi-Soft game in part because of their fetish for mindless collecting objectives. (There are a few other reasons I find UbiSoft games less than desirable.) I'm glad to see BW dropped the collecting stuff.

 

OTOH, I did enjoy finding all the unique items in Skyrim. There was no quest objective involved. It was just fun to wander about the map finding all the unique stuff hidden away here and there, like some anti-Troll axe found on the corpse of some guy who had been killed by trolls. I would then spend an hour or two decorating my houses with the stuff I had found.

 

As to planet scanning, I never had too much of a problem with that. Having the long service achievement helped for all my subsequent playthroughs, of course. And I remember the first time I played it was kinda exciting to enter some planet's orbit and hear EDI announce "Anomaly Detected." "I wonder what we'll find?" Reading the short blurb about what was detected and then trying to figure out which team mates to bring based on the limited intelligence provided. Too many people mash together planet scanning for minerals with finding new "dungeons" (for that is what they amount to). If the resources part hadn't been a part of planet scanning I think people would remember that part of ME2 more fondly than the treks in the Mako where all you ever found was one of 3 different types of dungeons.

UNC doesn't bore me that much. I do alright driving the Mako, using ME Wiki to find all the locations, reading anomaly descriptions, etc.

 

I just have uncontrollable yawning. I can't stop it. So I only do these missions in batches. I think I only have a few left now (Tali's Geth bit, Cerberus chain, not much else), thank the Maker.

Now planet scanning DOES bore me. Thankfully used resource bonuses and I do full sweep of missions for resources so that helps. And really one doesn't have to scan that much for most upgrades.

 

ME3's scanning, for what it was, kept me interested.

 

ME1 - inspired, fun, makes me yawn

ME2 - uninspired, unfun, doesn't make me yawn

ME3 - uninspired, fun, doesn't make me dawn

 

For my rating: ME3 > ME1 > ME2

But now for my yawniness: ME3 > ME2 > ME1 :(

As a rule, I don´t like mini-games or sub-modes that escapes from the gameplay. Mass Effect is already both a shooter and a rpg, and that´s rich enough for me. I see no need to add puzzles, searching, driving vehicles, controlling turrets, 

 

Bioware will always be haunted by Baldur´s Gate 2. The game take could take up to 200 hours. So in order to mask the fact that Mass Effect 1 is actually a very short game, they always make as walk or drive long distances with a slow character or a slow vehicle. Not to mention the forever lasting elevator rides. 

 

I would gladly exchange all the mako segments, the star systems and the collectibles for half a dozen more side-missions, or one more planet hub like the deleted one from liara´s recruitment mission. 

 

Most of the times I´m on completionist mode I feel a certain guilt. As if I´m not being responsible with the urgent matter at hand. Saren, Benezia and Sovereign are hatching a scheme and here I am trying to find gas deposits and minerals across the universe. I feel like I should be penalized for not taking my priorities seriously. I feel this during most of the side-missions, but most of all while collecting items.

 

Strangely, no matter how I decide to play the game, either with a speedrun mentality or as a completionist, Saren is never on a more powerful position. In ME2 at least it helps to be prepared prior to obtaining the reaper iff, and if you delay rescuing the crew, there´s a cost. If you delay too much, it´s even costlier.

Oh, I hate the me3 collecting system. it seems so rushed and unimaginative. The characters won´t even discuss the matter with you or with potential team-mates. You just happen to overhear them saying something about an object that could be useful, travel to place, obtain the item and deliver it. It´s mechanical and uninspired. 

 

The side-mission stages were also rushed. You don´t even interact with new people, it´s just Hackett delivering a briefing prior and after the mission. 

 

Not only most of the main missions in me3 became linear, but the side-missions became a big letdown.

 Now wait a minute. What about Ms Sato on Ontorom? Or that Riley character at the reactor? Personally, I don't like the N7 missions much, but they weren't as arid as you make them out. And there are only, what?, 6 or 7 of those? Other side missions, the ones where you meet old crew members, were quite substantial.

 

If anything, I thought a few of the main missions were a tad too short. Priority: Tuchanka was one of the few times we got to fight Reapers, yet altogether there actually weren't that many of them: 2 ravagers; 1 Brute; 2 ravagers; Some mooks; Some mooks; and then the Brutes. I thought the 2nd Leviathan mission (the one where you find Bryson's daughter) had it just about right. Thessia was pretty good too, right up until Kai Lame.

I completely agree on that second Leviathan mission. I loved the layout, and good pacing from start to finish, and a total b**** on insanity, at least for a noob like me. 

 

One thing I thought ME3 did right was replace the hacking minigames from the first two with a neat little omni-tool animation.

Once you know to expect that Harvester the mission becomes much easier. That Harvester ate my lunch one or twice as well.

You´re right, Cap, but I meant in the sense of obtaining the mission. In ME1, you could find decrypting objects, opening certain files, talking with people on the citadel, entering a new system. There were several ways to obtain a certain mission. The exceptions here are the monastery mission and the ones with the turian and krogan leaders. 

 

 

Aside from that, missions are liberated in the same order, and they always start and end in the same way. Despite its shortcomings, I still think me1 had the best side-missions in terms of story. Of course, the repetitive use of caves and structures was a pain, but story-wise, each mission had a fresh feeling.
