So, I know we've all heard that backgrounds are going to be based on a combo of class and race, but what sort of backgrounds are you hoping these combinations will produce? Some of my ideas are:

  • Dwarf/Warrior = Noble
  • Human/Warrior = Soldier
  • Elf or Qunari/Warrior = Mercenary
  • Elf/Mage = Dalish
  • Human/Mage = Circle Mage
  • Qunari/Mage = Apostate but treated even worse
  • Dwarf/Rogue = Casteless
  • Qunari/Rogue = Thief
  • Elf or Human/Rogue = Spy

I'm sure there are more creative combos, though. What do you guys think?

I think I read somewhere that the backgrounds are mostly based on race alone, with only the different mage classes getting slightly different backgrounds.

That's a little disappointing, but thanks for letting me know. Still, what do you think the backgrounds for each race will be, then?

The only actual word on this is that "all elves will be Dalish."

Wether or not that means everyone else is also just one background per race remains unknown to my knowledge.

Now that we know the Inquisitor is present at the peace conference, narrows the possibilities of what their "background" could be.

For human mages, at least, being a part of the mage rebellion would explain why they would be there.

Are there going to be backgrounds...or they going to play the amnesia card?

No, I've definitely heard there will be backgrounds of some sort.

There will be backgrounds, but there may be an amnesia card. Especially if you're really a meatsuit for a fade spirit, for example. Or rather, you are the fade spirit using the meatsuit with the background.

There are backgrounds, but it doesn't mean there is no amnesia card (at least for how you get the glowy hand and maybe a few other things).

So Revan? Reveal your own mysterious background as you go.

Will a human mage have a different last name from a human rogue or warrior like in DAO? I know the last name given for humans is Trevelyan. I'm just curious if the name applies to all classes.

Well, we don't really know, but I guess that if there was a name difference for Mages they would have revealed it at that time. It was pretty obvious that the "loading game" part was a extremely sneaky way for them to hint at the implementation of the races and their different background.

Because it was my favorite origin and I hate having to be stuck playing as someone raised by the Dalish. The only way I even make it fun is if my Inquisitor will be like Toph.

The fact that people will listen to a Qunari Inquisitor pretty much destroys any "They won't listen to you" arguments.

Actually, we have more than just the elves:

Elves are all Dalish Elves (so no Alienage Elves), including Mages.

Dwarves are all Surfacers.

Qunari are all Vashoth (born and raised outside the Qun, so not part of traditional Qunari culture).

The only one that's in question is the Humans (and more specific details about the other three).

So, pointy-eared Dalish would not have listened to my magic-hands fade manipulating veil-tear closing pointy-eared protagonist because he was raised in slum instead of a forest? Would have killed them all just for that stupid reasoning.

I've seen other mention that about the Dwarves and Qunari, do you have a source for that? I was only around when they commented on the Elves.

While the "City Elf" origin was hands down my favorite one to play in DA:O, I can understand not having that background as a choice in DA:I. I mean, there are a few scenarios with the ending of DA:O where the Alienage has more freedom and rights, so possibly they join the Dalish as the background story in DA:I, wanting to leave the place that held them in a nasty realm of racism and servitude. I think it would be a big task to include the previous Origins backgrounds for the PC in DA:I while considering ten years+ has passed in the timeline. I still see many here trying to tie their Warden experience as some expectation for a totally new protagonist that more than likely has no relevance to it.

The boons in Ferelden have no effect in Orlais.
