In theory. In fact, we've seen absolutely no Dalish clan beng different from any other Dalish clan
We only saw the Sabrae clan.

I personally hope that they leave the backgrounds ambiguous. I never wanted to play a Dalish so I'm going to play my elf as someone who turned their back on the clan. I don't expect Bioware to pander to my headcanon, but I'd like to have a little bit of agency in my character's background since they said they weren't going to have the same prevalence that they had in Origins.
Bioware isn't going to leave the background ambiguous - that would be a pretty big reversal from how they've handled their games in the past. Not even DA:O did that.

We saw Zathrian's clan, Merril's clan, and we had the clan in the most recent novel.

Yeah, they'll probably go "You were a very loyal member of the clan" or some nonsense.
Maybe they'll go the Mass Effect route.

I think it's more likely they make you Keeper, regardless of class. Which would mean that you'd have to have a heretical clan. And they'll either have you run into your clan or have others comment on it.
The point of not giving an origin is to have reactive content sprinkled through the game about both race and background.

Keeper, no. First, maybe.
I meant why the 'Oh geez
' attitude.
To answer your question, I have no problem with people being able to play Dalish Elves. My problem comes from us ONLY being able to play Dalish Elves.
Keeper, no. First, maybe.
Maybe. I think Bioware will give a background that justifies the leadership role in the Inquisition.
Oh, my mistake.
It's okay.

On the same token, they've never had you start as an actual leader of something, always at most a second.
In Mass Effect, you were the XO of Anderson
In Origins, you were either:
City Elf: Nobody
Dalish Elf: Hunter
Dwarf Commoner: Thug
Dwarf Noble: Middle child aka the spare
Mage: Recently-Harrowed mage
Human Noble: Second child aka the spare
In DA2 you were either an apostate or volunteer militiamen.
It's okay.
Don't get me wrong, though. I said "Oh, geez" and "Best news I've heard" as a joke, but I was also curious when they decided to make all elves Dalish and not have at least one of city origin. Has BioWare ever gave a reason why there's no city option? Because to be 100% honest, I probably would've played a city elf if an origin caught my attention in DA:I.
No, they have given no reason that I know of.

But in DA:O you had a legit basis to say you were an elite skill in something, e.g. trained by your amazing, out of this world mother (CE) or greatest talent as a young mage at the circle, incredible warrior in tournaments (HN Warrior), etc. What mattered in DA:O was that you were awesome enough to justify Duncan recruiting you to begin with as a GW. DA:I's equivalent is leadership, one would think. Beside your superplot powers.

I don't like roleplaying as Dalish Elves.
No matter anything else, this is a constant.
That's just preference and that's fine. I didn't mind playing the Dalish Origin, although I only did it twice. I played the CE origin at least 7 times. In the end though, many are going to be happy with the backgrounds they get and many will be bummed. I just want something different.
If we're Dalish then I think warriors and rogues will be the clan's chief hunter and the mage will be a Keeper's First. That way they're in positions with plenty of weapons/magic training and have some minor leadership experience.
