We've been told that if we cheat on our LIs from the first game, that decision will come back to haunt us in Mass Effect 3 (was it Casey that said that?). I personally think that's a bit unfair.

Now, before I continue, there's a pretty big spoiler here, so stop reading if you don't like spoilers...

Now that we know Tali can become your partner in ME2, I really regret getting together with Liara. Before this was revealed, I was planning on staying faithful to Liara. But now that Tali is an option, I get to make the decision I wanted to in the first game, only to have it bit me in the *** in the next game. This really irks me. Not only do I find Tali more lively than Liara, but her romance scenes are also more powerful, IMO (she's also much more adorable when she gets embarrasedPosted Image). I really hope that we can break off our relationship with our ME1 LI peacfully, and not have a situation where they walk in on you and your new LI together and causing a scene.

This happens in real life. You find someone you like, find someone you prefer, you have to break it off with your previous lover, it hurts but it's worth it in the end. There are undoubtedly going to be many players who find that they like the ME2 LIs much more than the ones in ME1. I hope damnation is not the only thing that awaits us if this is the case.

You don't have another playthrough where Shep is single?

I don't remember that comment...I thought he said if you cheated you'd become a statistic...of course I'm sure I've missed some of the comments.

Did they really say that it will haunt us? Not just something like "Your decisions will have an impact"? I just find it a little hard to believe that they would confirm that cheating will lead to bad things happening.

I think it's a tad ridiculous to go through all of the events of Mass Effect one, just to create a Mass Effect save where your Shepard is single out of all the decisions you have to largely repeat.  I also don't regret my Shepard's romance with Ashley.  I just hope that there's an option to handle the fact that Shepard has feelings for two women maturely.

A break-up scene, some tears, and maybe some understanding.

IT  *IS* possible for a partner to understand that their lover has moved on.

I am currently making sure I have two identical save games.
One with Liara.
One with no one.

That way I can pursue both. Simple as that. And yes, there are people that are going to regret taking a love interest in the first game... but it's been known for quite a while now that choices have consequences in the sequel... and I would think romancing someone is a pretty big choice... thus you could have known this from the start. And I think he did say they'd count the amount of cheater achievements, yeah, though that would be very unreliable... I'd get the achievement on like a very late playthrough which I'll abandon soon after I get it... just to get it. :P

TC, I actually do agree with you. That said, you can just do the option of bringing a single Shep into ME2 to get around that problem. As you said though, from a realistic standpoint you should be able to break off one romance and move into another without being punished for it. That's assuming you get the chance to.

I've heard Liara tries to dump you in ME2 anyways. Just let her do it.

yes it does happen in real life, and there are Consequences. makes sense that doing so in game would also result in consequences. it's not like you'll die and lose your save games over it, it'll be a plot point to deal with. BioWare have done an excellent job writing characters in all their games so far, there's no good reason to sacrifice that character depth

I hope they haven't done something stupid, like punishing cheating with Renegade points.

Hey, I'm technically dead. I've got the right to a fresh start.;)

^ Good call. Remember, she wasn't really against it in ME1 (Ashley was).

In real life, if you cheat, people get angry. People cheat anyway, just live with it. Worse case is likely some unpleasant dialogue, not a shotgun shot to the head. (Although you never know, if you cheat on Ash.)

Personally, I just finished a runthrough with no LI, so I can have guilt free nookie with Miranda or SuZe. And I've got a save with Liara as LI, and will stay faithful (and unless she hardcore wants to break up, I'm hanging on. Mmmm, Liara.)

Thought the same thing.  Let's see, everybody thinks I've been dead for like two years...makes sense that they would move on.  It would be nice to have the option of not taking that part of the story with you (as much as it would be awesome to keep that story going into ME3)

or

Ashley lures liara to one of the security monitors

Ashley: "hey Liara I thought you'd want to see this.....you know after what happened between you and the commander I think you need some entertainment"

Liara walks over: "by the goddess what  is Shepard doing to Tali?.........I am going to be sick.....wait...she is ENJOYING THAT?!?!?!"

Ashley: "payback's a **** isn't it you blue freak?"

Well, if you do, she'll probably have moved on in ME3, and then you'll be the one left out in the cold. If Tali either dies or dumps you by then, you're on your own, mister.

Until they reveal the ME3 love interests. Captain Kirk 2.0 always finds a way.

Why should cheaters be punished? Because the entire point of this trilogy is that there are consequences for the decisions you make.

Exactly. You can't eat your cake and have it too.

Welcome to the new Mass Effect fan. They rail against their choices having consequences, and they lobby Bioware to remove character customization options.

Thanks for saying that phrase correctly.

Best solution to not be a cheater: New playthrough with no romance.

Other option: Get ready for awkwardness in ME3.

Awkwardness is the best.
