Hi,

has there been any info regarding the overland map of DA:I?

I would prefer a 3D overland map with animals roaming around, clouds drifting by, waves crashing to the shores, birds flying by etc. But the map mechanics would stay the same as in DA:O. So you would move around on the map by clicking on discovered locations. The party then "walks" to the location and enters it. Just like in DA:O but graphically more detailed and more "alive".

Graphically I would imagine something like this:

Or this:

I don't think so. Then again, I could be proven wrong. Either way, I prefer the simple "paper" map.

I prefer the old way, if the in game map is anything like the one on www.dragonage.com but with more detail and wear and tear then i'm happy, a map like that is more immersive as if your character is getting a map out of a backpack or pointing to somewhere on a war table and saying "we go there!" the 3D map idea you have i think pull you out of the game and you realize you are in a virtual world more.

Hmm, I would see it the exact opposite way. When traveling on a 3D map it would look like a zoomed out view with you still being in the world, just looking at it from a different angle/perspective. This would create the illusion of a seamless world.
Do we know if the player will pull out a map or will the map just pop up, wenn we leave an area? If it pops up it could break immersion a bit due to the hard transition to a completely different and different looking element. The softer the transition the less immersion breaking it will be, imo.

I`d rather have an old-school "ancient map"" thing, to be honest. 3d would be ok too, I guess but...I dunno. Sticking with the classics is never bad.

I miss traversable 3d overland maps, but that ship has probably sailed. Having it 3d just for show if it just functions like the DAO map, though, seems like a waste.

It could be seen as a graphical evolution. Also free movement would of course be cool, but maybe too hard and costly to implement. Roaming monsters would bee cool though and you could choose to engage them or flee. And of course a day/night cycle and weather effects would add a lot to the atmosphere and immersion.

Really, i don`t like these 3D-Maps... don't know why, but  to me  it somehow kills the atmosphere... and it never worls out. skyrims Worldmap was the most dreadful and unreliable i've ever seen.

Maybe i just like those paperscroll-like things more... seem like the old treasure-maps from adventure-books and they remind me of the good old pen&paper times.

Well... what also would be cool is a mix-kinda thing like shown in the intro of the game of thrones Tv-series. Something that looks static at first but then  comes to life when getting closer. Stylish.

It'd be nice to have a map that we could place markers on. Like "Come back to this cave later"  and "stay away from this part until more levels" and "lol shoved Cassandra into a pit here"

It would be a nice 'bells and whistles' type of thing to have. Though, in DAO the map was really a glorified loading screen too, so if you're actually going to represent travel across the map in full 3d with avatars and roaming monsters and such, it may get to where you need a loading screen for your loading screen...

I still get all nostalgic when I hear this though:

So if anything can bring back that feeling, I'm all for it.

The journeys from place to place could be very atmospheric with a 3D map. Imagine your party would have to travel quite a bit to reach the next destination. On the 3D map the journey would be presented in a very atmospheric way. You would see animals roaming around, clouds drifting by, maybe a thunderstorm is raging. Night sets in and you would have to think about resting somewhere. It would be cool if you could discover hidden locations on your journey and then stop to explore those areas. This could be very immersive.

But I think that DA:I will have a classic paper map. But maybe they can include some animations there as well like drifting clouds for atmospheric reasons.

I'd like a 3D map if we can explore it, like in Storm of Zehir. If it's just for the visuals and it has the same functionality as the previous dragon age ones, I'd say its better to keep it simple. It serves it's function, looks good enough and reduces loading times.

Skyim's map is a perfect example of how to make something less functional to make it look cooler.

You gotta be kidding! That map... that dreadful map... it was just taking the 3D-landscrape and putting the camera several miles above it, so that even clouds got in  the way and blocked sight to the ground - it killed the overview. Even big cities were barely seen. In the end it was all about "oh, theres that icon symbolising this or that, so put a marker there and go in that direction" but with almost no ability to plan the best route possible.

One of my first mods fpor skyrim was replacing that map.

The purpose of a map, is to keep orientation and making it easy, to find your way... in this regard those paper-like maps from Origins or dragon's dogma did a better job.

If you really want it that bad, then - as i mentioned - why not mixing it with the art-style of the game-of-thrones-intro? Like first having this plain paper-map you can use to distinguish your route and then, by zooming in ormoving the party, the map would come to life by forests, mountains and cities growing out of it.

That would work and look cool.

Fair point. It wasnt the greatest map. It was a nice map to look at though.

The structures appearing as you zoom over them would be pretty interesting.

The map of Skyrim is a very bad example. Better is the map of the unfortunately cancelled Chaos Chronicles or Storm of Zehir.

A map like the one that is seen in the Intro to Game of Thrones, where different Keeps pop up as we build or conquer them, would be amazing.  A ton of work to design and render, but I think it would be cool.
