Since the semester is coming to an end and I keep finding myself thinking about playing Mass effect trilogy one last time. However, I only played it once as a soldier an felt that I didn't receive the best gameplay experience I could of had. In RPGs have classes I always choose the mage/caster class then make them into a spell-warrior type or in dragon age origins arcane warrior/blood mage & da2 blood mage. Recently I realized I only use soldiers main abilities an spam concussive, AR, and grenades more than actually shooting down targets. I want to know if its best for me to play an adept or a vanguard. My perspective of both are adepts to be squishy an vanguards to be suicidal. I want something not squishy or suicidal but something good for close combat and still cast biotic powers. Let me know what you guys think. What class would be best, what weapons, talents, gear, etc. should I be looking for. Much appreciated.

I'd recommend the Sentinel. He has Warp and Throw which make really nice biotic explosions, he has grenades, has overload so shielded enemies become laughable and has Tech armor which can give you up to 50% damage reduction (perfect for you since you don't want to be squishy.)
Only downside to the Sentinel is that he doesn't have an ammo power. I personally never found this to be a problem since you can take a squadmate with an ammo power specced for squad-ammo or take the Armor Piercing ammo bonus power.
As for weapons, any weapon is good on him really. Since you want something that's good for CQC, I'd say go with a shotgun. Wraith is my personal favourite but you can take whatever shotgun you like and it'll perform well in close range. I would also recommend taking a secondary weapon that has a bit more range than your primary shotgun (I like the carnifex pistol) just because some levels are designed for ranged combat and trying to snipe enemies with a shotgun can get frustrating.
For squadmates, take Liara and Kaidan (if you didn't kill him in Virmire.) You can chain biotic explosions and do crazy high damage in a very short time with those two squadmates:
1) Kaidan casts Reave
2) You cast throw (BE)
3) Liara casts warp
4) You cast throw (BE)
5) You cast Warp
6) Kaidan casts Reave (BE)

Adept is slightly more consistent throughout the trilogy.
Vanguard changes radically between ME1 and ME2.

Sentinels aren't my style but I'll give them a try in multiplayer. If I find them fun than adept and vanguards ill consider a play through using sentinels.

Adepts aren't really squishy, they have the same health and shields as other classes. You can also take Fortification or Barrier if you feel you need the DR.
Likewise, Vanguards aren't really suicidal if you use a little care in charging. Charge -> Nova is a really powerful combo. But if you want to cast powers much, Vanguard may not be what you're looking for. The typical build uses most of it's cooldowns for Charge.
If you want a biotic caster I'd suggest:
1) Adept - Focus on Singularity OR Pull (don't need both), Warp and Throw. I like Barrier or Warp Ammo as bonus powers because they're passive and don't use cooldowns. Against mooks you Singularity/Pull then Throw. Against bosses you Warp then Throw. Rinse and repeat, guns are optional. I always have at least one squadmate with me that has Overload for shield stripping, though Warp -> Throw works just fine against shields.
2) Sentinel - focus on Warp, Throw and Overload. My style with this class is to Overload EVERYTHING that isn't armored for crowd control then shoot it to death, with biotic explosions saved for bosses and/or armored units. No reason you couldn't use biotics more though. Bonus is usually Warp Ammo but taking Fortification can make you a super-tank.
In either case, taking Liara along will greatly speed up the frequency of your biotic explosions. Her Singularity has a crazy-fast CD.
For CQC take a good shotgun or maybe the Talon pistol, which also has great range if you fire it from cover.
My armor tends to vary a lot. Adepts get very little out of power damage bonuses, and recharge bonus is only good if you're not traveling light (I usually stick to a single weapon). Sentinels can make good use of power recharge to offset the Tech Armor penalty, or go with Health/Shield armor to compliment your DR. Sometimes I just slap weapon damage on there because I shoot a lot more than I have to with either class.

You really should have Pull when you are an Adept, just because Guardians are a thing. 1 point isnt a bad investment for a skill not likely to get alot of use outside of that, unless you are using something more derpishly powerful that makes the shield irrelevant. Like Flarebomb combos. They literally can clear rooms if you build your explosion range up.

You will not get a good idea of what the SP Sentinel is like by playing MP. The only MP Sentinel that comes close to the SP Sentinel is the Turian who has Warp and Overload. The lack of Throw is a rather substantial detriment since it prevents you from combo'ing as rapidly as you otherwise might.
As ShadyEngineer noted, Sentinel seems to fit your description of your preferred playstyle. Another possibility is an Engineer with Fortification, but in that case you miss out on the biotic combos. The Sentinel can combo with both biotics and tech. So can the Adept by using either Throw or Warp as detonators. Vanguard is somewhat like Soldier in that you focus on one power, Adrenaline Rush in the case of Soldier, Charge in the case of Vanguard. Vanguard is hardly suicidal, though. Getting your shields restored every 3 seconds makes the Vanguard a very durable class, especially if you take Fortification as a bonus power. About the only thing you can't Charge safely is a turret. (You also need to be somewhat cautious with Banshees lest they grab you.)
My own personal favorite is Sentinel with AP ammo as a bonus power.

Yeah, a single point in Pull is a fine investment. There are so many points to go around anyway.
On the other hand, Guardians are easily neutralized by an armor-piercing mod, AP ammo, Liara's Singularity, any power that knocks their shield aside, or good ol' fashioned mail-slotting.
Either way you won't go wrong.

And thanks to DLC, almost every weapon has an AP mod that you can put on a weapon to eliminate the need for AP ammo.
Pull is cute to have, but once you got that mod, you could and probably should relocate that point until you need a point dump.

Pull + Flare turns any class into a pseudo-Adept. The biotic explosions that combo can provoke are tremendous.

Anything that expands Flare's devastation into the 20m range is a tremendous primer. Warp is my power of choice in that regard cause nothing protects it from sticking and priming.

I'll try bringing Kaidan or Liara along and try those combos in my next NG+. Although with a Venom X and my current build, I'm afraid even Insanity will be way too easy ![]()
I may even change the shotgun to a Geth Plasma, or Wraith. But now without the Venom, I feel like "nude" against Brutes, Banshees, Primes and Atlases.
