Until recently, I've been a casual player; I cared more for the story than the combat. This time around I really paid attention to building my character and companions properly, getting the right equipment and strategy when fighting. Wow. What a difference. I bumped from casual to normal. Too easy. Then hard. Nope, easy again. Finally, I took a deep breath and bumped up to nightmare, fully expecting to be struck down immediately. Nope. Now, I know what you all have been talking about. This game is easy.
I thought you all were full of it when you said nightmare was easy.....

It's a matter of understanding how to play it. Easy was hard for me when I first played it. I just didn't understand what the hell I was doing or how to control the team very well or even the best design for a team. In that case, easy is very hard. Once you've played around with it though, the difficulty isn't really so bad. For me, it's a matter of how fast I feel like going through the game. I like to run characters and so the fights are less of me being my character. The character comes out in everything else. But when I'm in a gaming mood, I bump up the difficulty and it's more fun that way, being more tactical about choices, controlling the team... all that stuff makes it more fun and it's still not bad once you get the hang of it. I think Ser Cautherin was my biggest challenge when doing an attack during the rescue on nightmare.

Yep, thats the only battle in the game I can remember giving me trouble the first time around.

Yeah, I was the same way. I didn't really care much for getting into the nitty gritty of all the stats and what not. Easy was enough of a challenge and I died a lot, I mean alot on normal. I'm just really amazed what a difference a proper build and appropriate gear can make. I haven't gotten to the Cautherin battle yet. Almost there though. I'll report back on how difficult it is for me on nightmare.

But yeah, the right gear and build make even the hardest battles almost trivial. Gimping yourself with unoptimal (but RP friendly) builds makes things a bit more interesting, so does having no healer in the party and using no potions.
Ser Cauthrien battle is the best battle in the game, it's how a proper boss fight should be setup, not just making it a single bullet sponge affair.

I like the idea of no potions and no healer. I still rely a lot on my healer to save my butt when I stop paying atttention and get drop kicked to la la land.

I'm more for the role play... mostly have been, so I'll bump up attributes a bit but raise the game to normal or hard. I have no idea where I actually am because I want all my spells and skills. To get them I have to have to add xp at least. Then part way though I want the challenge and fly through the game or start another just to have the challenge. And then when I start I see all the spells I love to use because they are so much fun, that I feel compelled to give them to myself. It's so hard to not run with fun spells. Not because it makes it easier, but I love how it feels when I see how to plan things out and I decide what to use... do I grease/fireball that mob and hold my team back? Do I let them come at me and COC them? Do I put them to sleep? That's the part I'm in love with and honestly, the start of the game bores me to death now... the wildes are so damn boring that I run around and take out everything and do what little quests there are there just to make it more fun. I get sort of completionist about it.
Maybe someone here can give me a good way around this so that I have cool spells that are fun but it doesn't give me an edge. How can I gimp myself but still have some fun with the magic because I love setting up tactics with spells and planning that out and having just one or two is so damn boring. Any thoughts?

But that's a pretty integral part of the game. It's the challenge to stay alive and orchestrate things so you stay alive. I actually like it when I have to use potions. That's when I know I have to get really smart about things. It's not like you just run around shooting crap. Now maybe if you could gimp yourself there that might be something. Limit your potions or something? It would make you think differently about how to deal, but if you weren't almost dying then the challenge aspect wouldn't be that fun. That's why when I do a game that's sort of strictly roleplay I find myself not having fun with the battles because I set it up to be easier and breeze through it. Then I'm like... BORED NOW. So I just stick with the story and the game, the actual non RPG gaming part where you are fighting is not very fun to me. But I've played it so many times now that boredom has set in.
I added some preset head morphs because I was bored with the ones that were there and couldn't change them that much... and during adding the files I needed for them a bunch of things like the eyes of different NPCs got all screwy and white - possessed like and I don't know why so I have to go back to scratch and download the game and everything again because NPCs look WRONG. Yet I'm just not as into the game anymore (for now) so I'm not going to bother. I'll do it piecemeal here and there. But part of this was probably because I stuck with RPG aspects and didn't really have as much fun with the challenge part. Next time I'll have fun with the challenge part and not get so wrapped up in the RPG aspect. I'll be drinking those potions whenever I need them and be proud of it. HA!

Next step, gimp yourself hard and impose restrictions and still find the game too easy, lawlz.

Ser Cauthrien really made me rethink my tactics. I was kind of pissed that I couldn't replay it if I got captured. I wanted another chance to fight her but then I got more curious about the rescue which was fun. But I really wanted to savor the tactics there because that is one you really have to plan out how you will do it because you've got so many things to contend with - cauthrien, the mages, the stuns from the archers.... that is very tactical. The house with the blood mages and traps all over it in denerim back alley was another one that felt really fun to me. If those mages lock onto you with crushing prison I think it is, you are so screwed. That was another really fun one. I had to be strategic about that one as I did it early on. I think more mages would have really made it much more interesting because they can really screw you up and you have to be clever especially if you are a mage.

During this playthrough, the only time I ever really need potions is when I start rushing through the game and not planning my attack. Needing to use a potion lets me know that I'm doing it wrong. So, I'm sort of liking the idea of at least ditching potions to make myself pay attention. I think I still keep my healer though. Not ready to let go of all my safety nets right now.
Right now, I'm at the Arl of Denerim's estate and didn't use the disguise. I threw a repulsion glyph down at the door with the marbari's and then cast storm of the century. Unfortunately, I didn't cast it far enough back in the room and my character and Wynne got caught in the storm when it clipped through the walls. We both died. Oops! Allistair ran a bit too far forward and alerted some more guards in other rooms and the repulsion spell wore off. He was quickly surrounded by dogs and gaurds. Thankfully, he and Leliana still managed to take everybody out without dying but I did have to spam potions. Almost to Cautherian.
I'm a bit torn though. Will I get more xp if I let myself get caught or if I win the fight with Cautherian? I plan to save before the battle anyway just to see if I can take them down on nightmare but I'm not sure whether or not to let myself get captured later.

I've always found the deserted building to be a challenge. This time, I used my AOE spells to sort of scan forward and see where the enemeis were at before moving in so I could plan my attack. (didn't have any points in survival) That really helped as I could hit them hard with spells to soften them up before they were activated.

If you don't like Cautherian then save before and then keep at it until you kill them. XP wise, there's not THAT many to kill in the prison escape and it really isn't as challenging as trying to whip her butt. She's a freakin archdemon! So if you don't care too much about the XP, the challenge in beating her is probably more worthwhile and satisfying than escaping the prison which isn't really that hard. Alternatively if you don't do the escape you can pick who rescues you which is kind of fun. I did zev and leliana recently for fun. It was fun messing around with their stealth in fights. But the xp goes to their characters I think. So it really depends on what you want. Personally I think winning against Cautherian would have been WAY more satisfying and likely some good XP as she is a boss.

hmmm, my warden does sort of like being almost naked in the cell with Alistair though. Decisions, decisions!

I slaughtered Cautherian and her goons! As soon as the fight started I took off through the door towards the hallway leading to Anora's room. Alistair followed as did several of the guards and Cauthrian. Stupid Wynne and Leliana stayed behind and got killed before I could do anything about them. My arcane warrior has revival though, so I made my way toward them and revived them. Then, I took control of both of them and moved them into the hallway, both at range. Next, I cast chain lightening to soften up the guards in the hallway with me. There were a few archers standing at the door in a line shooting at us, so I ran over and used cone of cold on them followed by shock. Then I focused on killing the remaining guards and Cautherian in the hallway. After that, I went out the door and used mana clash on the mage. Alistair finished him off. There were four archers left in the far corner at this point. I stayed at range and cast blizzard on them. They froze and I cast any other spells I could while Wynne hit them with arcane bolt and Leliana shot them with arrow. Allistair mopped up and the battle was over. I'll deprive myself of almost naked Alistair and won't reload. Gotta' say, that was fun and satisfying.

Good fight...
And this is why it rocks to have mods on a PC ... all the half naked time you want with alistair.... though it loses the amusement factor after a little bit.

But I have to agree that slaughtering everyone and walking out of the front door is very satisfying and quite badass at that.

When you got a balanced team and use well your abilities and tactics system it's a piece of cake.
If you go to Anora's cell when the scene ends and if you have one good tank it's "easy". She hits hard. That's the tactic I use too. ![]()
Only battle that give me big problems it was on Golems of Amgarrak dlc, the final combat, but it's a little of luck and a little of tactic.
I'm now with DA II on nightmare mode, well, I was until I reach a companion quest and I saw why many people get complain about waves of enemies.... really frustrating. When I down the difficulty to Hard it was like another game.... you really enjoy it.
It's not like DA:O that you have always and idea of what to do, here it's a crazy battle one after the other, makes you mad. ![]()

I'd heard that some people were upset with DAII combat. I never cared about the waves as I always played on easy and just bumbled into every encounter slashing away. So, I'm guessing with the 'waves' of enemies it's a pain because you can't really plan out your battle on harder levels where it matters?

This is the case with the majority of Bio's games. Starts out moderately challenging (due to few hitpoints and abilities to use, etc.) and then the difficulty completely plateaus partway through once these things are a nonfactor, as opposed to things getting progressively harder.
The DA2 Ogre is a ****** to fight on nightmare, aaaaaaand then the rest of the first act is a complete cakewalk thanks to DLC gear twinking and having access to haste on Anders & Bethany/Hawke. Only the deep roads dragon gave me a hard time.
I just recently made a 2|18 Consular on KotOR and it completely and utterly unbalances the game. Etc etc
