That is like the most horrible comparation I've ever seen.

Smells like Digital Foundry.

Yea...as someone who bought it on PS3 and then upgraded it to PS4, I can say for sure those screenshots are "bad" lol. The difference between the games graphics is MASSIVE. BF4 also runs pretty rough on PS3.

BF4 was painful to play on PS3.

You're absolutely right I think. I even said I wasn't happy with it, but you can see some differences if you squint and zoom in a lot.

I saw bigger differences in the X1 and PS4 comparisons while I was looking for a useable screenshot. I think I'll spend even a little more time looking now.

I'm ready to spend $2000 on my first gaming PC, I can't believe people are hesitant to drop $400 for a new console. It makes no sense - all the big devs will eventually abandon the 8 yr old dinosaurs that everyone owns. Might as well get an xbone now and keep the funbox till next gen games start rolling out. And improvements on better tech involve much more than graphics. More memory, better animations and particle effects, as well as new developments down the line. Just to name a few.

That's why I don't put much stock in screenshot comparisons. They never tell the entire story and usually the people who do them do so in a biased way. I like seeing the games in motion. That's when you see the real differences. But yea, absolutely no way is that screenshot accurate. The AA alone in PS3 is so jaggy around the edges from what I remember that SS has to be fake on PS3/PS4.

That DF comparition is completely worthless, their setup wasn't even capturing what PS4 showed on the screen.

The funny thing is that they admited it but didn't take down the article anyway, meanwhile several amateur Youtubers were able to make a vastly better comparisons than journalists who supposed to be specialized on the technical part of the games, but I guess the misleading reviews come with getting that sweet Xbone money (in addition to several months of damage control).

It's sad though, Digital Foundry used to be a pretty decent source a few years ago.

It's not always hesitance so much as lacking even $400 to play just the one game. For me, I just don't play a lot of games. I play the ones I have a lot...but I don't buy a large variety as I'm on a fairly limited budget. And dropping that sort of money on a console (which is my preference for gaming) to play one game...especially since I'm not too keen on having voice and motion activated crap forced on me just seems silly.

But I might...if I see a special. I got my 360 when they were doing a promotion for it and got an awesome deal.

Judging by how badly X1 is selling compared to PS4 you might see a deal sooner rather than later. In fact, I saw a deal other day that had the system at $500 but gave TF and a year of XBL Gold free so you saved over another $100. It will probably have a price drop by the holiday season seeing as PS4 is already 2 to 1 in sales and no slowdown in sight for demand.

Obviously. Technological hindrances don't allow a game for PS3 to be as good as its PS4 version.

Are you FO REAL? :P

Do you realize that not all humans have all that disposable income? How old are you? Do you realize people pay bills, have emergency house repairs or accidents or health scares? That people have kids that always need crap?

Or that some people prefer to spend a few hundred bucks or thousand bucks on, say, travel, or something other than gaming?

Will the last generation versions be inferior?

Of course they will, but that doesn't (shouldn't) mean that the older generation version will be bad.

I think the key factors are:

  1. Commercial
  2. Technical
  3. Gamer expectation

Commercial

BioWare look to be doing all the right things, but commercially, I think a successful launch (given recent bumpy history) is rather important. Freezing out the last generation console owners is just too big a commercial risk. It's a big ask and a brave move to be that company that 'forces' a console upgrade on their fans - something that it looks like CD Projekt are risking (and so are wisely passing on mad October), but I understand entirely why BioWare has chosen not to. They've taken the time to do a good job (because they need to) so they don't want to limit sales to current generation only.

Technical

The shift comes when you build a game in one generation and upscale it for the next, or build the game and nerf it back to work in last generation.

I think you'd need to be a dev to know for sure, but I imagine for DAI there's a bit of both there. I can't believe releasing a 360/PS3 version is an afterthought.

Gamer expectation

Right now, new generation enhancements are more about being pretty than functional. When the processing required to make the gameplay and AI function have to be cut down, then we've reached the point to drop last generation - we're probably not quite there yet.

Last generation console gamers are used to the quality that produces, so better graphics look like a bonus, rather than that the 360/PS3 look like a nerf.

In 12 months things will be very different as gamers steadily buy into and become used to that higher bar.

Go back a few years and you can see massive differences.

Example: BioWare's Knight of the Old Republic - the difference that 10 years makes!

I loved playing KOTOR but it's tough to back now, however good the writing, because we've moved on.

Even if they are a bit nerfed, I'll still get the ps3 version. I can't justify spending 500+ on a new console! when history has show. That if you wait a year or two there are massive price drops.

That's probably why spears were cut as a weapon for us to use.

I'm personally waiting until Destiny comes out to grab one, PS4's indie library is expanding very nicely, but my PC can actually run those.

Yeah that's a good reason to wait. If you wait for a huge price drop you could even re-purchase DAI for ps4 and still save money in the end.

I probably WILL get it for DAI, though. So... fingers crossed the price goes down a bit in the next few months?? :P

Expect longer load times, a lower framerate (with more drops) and significantly poorer visuals (resolution, textures, particles, lighting etc.) on the last gen version. DAI isnt going to look quite as good as it could as they have to take the previous generation of hardware into account, but you can expect a pretty noticable different between the last and current gen versions. Only you know whether or not this is something that bothers you, however.

Yes, exactly. Not ot mention how badly Australian gamers are ripped off in prices. Take back omega was 30aud as opposed to the 15 us got.

Meh, I still play PS1 games that even work better than some newer dlc ridden games. So graphics don't really bother me in the least, but price tags do, especially Australian Price tags.

You got like a Trademe or Ebay or whatever specific to Australia? In NZ I've bought pretty cheaply priced games on Trademe in the past. On those rare occasions where I was willing to wait a couple days or so for shipping, that is. :P

This will be the norm for a while I'm guessing. Games that feature on both Current Gen and Last Gen won't be as good as they could be. This was the case for AC Black Flag. The new AC - Unity, is PS4/X1 only and from what has been shown of the gameplay thus far, it's looking quite amazing.

Won't be as good in what way? Graphically? I'd agree with you there, but Black Flag had absolutely tremendous gameplay that worked fine (as far as I understand) on the old consoles.

There are a few tech differences, like having more memory, but most of the console differences are graphical and won't affect gameplay much.
