Imagine massive scale production and 2010 technology...
We get to relive it!! Only this time it's 20+GB of kickass D&D RPG.
It might lose its "cult" attraction then but what the hell.

Ah no.

Because all this new tech limits your games. BG would suck that way.

It just wouldn't be the same game, but it would be the exact same game. I think the novelty would wear off pretty quickly.

Well think of say Street Fighter IV
Nothing new with the gameplay but everything else was new and downright awesome!!
And it had an average rating of 94/100 with the critics. A huge commercial success too.
Personally I think it ROCKS!!

Not really to be honest. While BG and BG2 were great for their time, Forgotten Realms remains a pretty lackluster and "flat" setting (the most generic of the AD&D ones)

I'm actually glad that Bioware decided to go with an original setting and did away with AD&D.

It could have the same story and NPCs, those are ageless. BUT if it's supposed to be state-of-the-art production, it's going to cost. And to make a big production profitable, today it has to appeal to the mainstream of console and casual gamers. That means that the mechanics would definitely have to be dumbed down. Do we really want to see that? :?

By the way, given the legal problems that float around D&D and it's collateral intellectual properties, I'm pretty sure we can forget about it.

I would like them to adapt it for portable media, the DS say, it would be nice to play on the train...

Honestly, no. I don't want the wheel re-invented. I'd like to see a game with the same core values. But I do not see the need for playing the same game all over again. It was fun and amazing in its time. It's still fun to play now. But that doesn't mean I want to revisit it.

That's what laptops are for. I think even the crappiest laptop out there can play Baldur's gate perfectly. Actually, I might just install Baldur's 2 on my laptop, now that I think about it :D

A whole genre is basically dead yet you don't sound all that upset.

I'm used to look forwards instead of backwards. I see a lot of great games incoming every year, and I don't think 2010 will disappoint me. So why letting Nostalgia spoil the fun?

Also, nothing is dead, CDs are pretty much eternal. I'm installing BG2 on my laptop right now, in fact. If you want to play an older game, you can just take it out of the case and play it. is graphics that important?

No. BG2 is highly overrated, in my opinion. A lot of the world was wasted space and a lot of the dialogue was even more cliche than DA:O. The entire game relies on a flawed combat system (AD&D 2ed) and a very overused setting (Forgotten Realms). Bleh.

I'd much rather more Dragon Age. The new setting is much more interesting than FR.

Nostalgia could sell pretty good. One can't begin to name all those entertainment remakes that scored big.

You're right, though.

If we're quite sure there would be no remake, then we just need to let go... very sad.

I'd love to see Baldur's Gate 2 done up like Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil, - 'painted' backgrounds with 3d-characters on them are really beautiful - and D&D is actually kind of interesting when it's turn-based and incorporating such things as attacks of opportunity, reach weapons, movement speeds, and so on - all things that BG1 and 2 had to cut out or abstract because of it's kinda shoddy RtwP combat system...

And yeah forgotten realms is generic and all, - but its fun to romp around in a familiar place - my only contact with it is through BG and IWD anyway so it's not like it wore out its welcome!

What made BGs fascinating for me is the Infinity Engine. Drawn backgrounds, it's like the game is all a work of art. Today, with 3D games, it's just about a static object and you put on textures you might have gotten from real life, like picturing wood and put it as a texture... I did so with a few of my Morrowind plugins... and it worked. It's like photography : It can be beautiful, but it doesn't have the same appeal to me like old drawings from big legends. I seriously envy the ones that made the background of the game.

Having a game with the same great story and a 3D engine could be nice, on that I have no doubt, but the Infinity engine added the final essence.

It's NEVER going to happen for two main related reasons, in my opinion:

1. Limited appeal.

It takes a certain mindset to really appreciate the Infinity Engine games. You have to be the kind of person who finds detailed 2-D art beautiful. One must have the patience to appreciate a story that slowly unfolds (BG 1 in particular) like acquiring a taste for a unique wine. One must enjoy reading text, and get gratification out of finding hidden  gems like clicking on the gravestones in BG 1 (ha ha). If you didn't like reading the codex in Dragon age, then it's highly doubtful that an Infinity engine game would appeal to you.

2. Which bring us to  the number 2  reason why a re-make would never happen:  Money.

In order to garner enough sales, they would have to make changes to the Baldurs Gate "essence" and "atmosphere" in order to appeal to a wider audience that wants more instant gratification, flashier graphics, and a faster paced story that is less dialogue heavy. A re-make would only appeal to a few cult fans if they tried to really stay true to that indefinable "essence" of the Infinity Engine, and this would mean much less sales, which means "no way will this happen !"

Dragon Age tried to skirt both worlds and appeal to both the old hardcore IE fans, and the new people who never played that type of game, but with mixed success. However, it did do an excellent job of getting new people introduced to the world of dialogue-heavy RPG's because the marketing campaign made them think that DA was a faster, action packed game than it actually is.   I don't get the impression that the new players who were attracted via the marketing would be willing to plunge deeper into an Infinity Engine style game without getting bored.

Actually DAO made me miss AD&D and the Forgotten Realms setting.
For 15 years I'm now playing PC games set in the Forgotten Realms. Can't throw that away.

Hillsfar

Pool of Radiance (one of the best ever)
Curse of the Azure Bonds
Secret of the Silver Blades
Pools of Darkness (epic story)

Eye of the Beholder 1, 2, 3

Gateway to the Savage Frontier
Treasures of the Savage Frontier

Menzoberran (Underdark forever)

Pools of Radiance 2 (boring)

Icewind Dale 1 & 2

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Tales of the Sword Coast
Throne of Bhaal

Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2
Shadows of Undrentide
Hordes of the Underdark (my favorite NWN1 addon)
Mask of the Betrayer ( Chris Avellone writing is again astonishing. I like when he get serious. The only guy I would put before David Gaider)
Storm of Zehir

Descent to Undermountain (buggy)

Ok, next one is not set in FR but you can't list so many good CRPG's without mentioning the best ever.

Planescape: Torment
This game separates the hack&slay from the true RPG players.

Also I prefer the AD&D combat mechanics. Nevertheless DAO has a very well staged story.

Kinda sad but so very true.

I like old-school RPG-s so much and it hurts to see how today's market has killed the genre.
