I disagree. The problem is that those games were released in that time, with that technology.

Baldur's Gate series will always be one of the best games when it comes to character development, story etc. There is no way it will be inferior to new games, heck, games are usually doing worse and worse in depth.

It's about BG2 being BG2 with everything in the package.

Yeah, seeing the characters' faces while talking, seeing the emotion change is great. But will it make it as good as imagining Minsc? Or will they be able to do it at least as well as imagining?

That's where the problem lies.

I actually would rather in NOT be remade. This might work for games like Final fantasy VII, where the graphics were at a point where they didn't leave much to the imagination, but also didn't convey much emotion either. BGII's 2d graphics and design meant that the atmosphere was there, the cutscenes worked great because they were complimented by my imagination, there was no need for sub-par virtual actors. Also, the game just wouldn't be the same. It's strange, but as much as I love to hear about old greats being remade, BGII is a game I think deserves to stay where it is. It's truly timeless.

I tried going back to BGII so many times... But everytime I try these words of wisdom brings me back to reality.

If games are like porn, then old ass games are like the sears catalog... Cannot satify a bone in my body.

It's not that I hate BG2, I played that game so many times. Played Icewind dale a bunch, and Fallout, and Torment, but nostalgia does not do it for me, I just can't get into infinity engine game anymore. I just get this urge to do other things when I boot it up, play another game, read a book, watch a movie, do the dishes... can't grab me anymore.

So maybe a re-make would be good. Maybe it would grab me again.

I wouldn't mind seeing it remade, simply because then it might have a ruleset that I could stand. It's weird, every other IE game I can play and deal with the combat (even if it is stupid easy) but I absolutely detest the mage-centric nature of high level D&D combat.

Admittedly, I prefer my mages as blasters, not as debuffing/cc machines, and direct damage is worthless in high level D&D combat.

In the end it's all because BGII had all those elements making it so unforgettable.

I guess what we need now is something equally intriguing and has the same timeless appeal...

I think DA:O won't last that long, though. I believe it's up to DLCs and sequels to pick us up again and so forth.

Ah no.
Because all this new tech limits your games. BG would suck that way.

hmmmm....how about a happy medium? 3D models like what troika did in temple of elemental evil? enhance it for larger resolutions, and all else the same. keep the second edition rules too. i'm in for that. heck, i still play it as is.

Remakes rarely do the original production justice. I think most of us who actually played the original Baldur's Gate games would end up disappointed by the final products. Folks who have never played the originals may get a kick out of them (I consider the originals without question BioWare's best work so far), but at the end of the day what's the point?

Anyone who wants to play Baldur's Gate, Tales of the Sword Coast, Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal and do not own copies can find them easily enough through online retailers. They all work perfectly fine on modering operating systems, and as long as you can get past the dated graphics they're enjoyable games with enjoyable stories despite the "generic setting". Honestly though the Forgotten Realms isn't inherently generic; Mask of the Betrayer is a fine example of how the setting can be interesting and original with the right location and writing team.

If a 5+ year old game still makes you wanna play it, I'd say it's a good game. Your personal preference over visualization is another issue. "It's not the game, it's you". The game still draws you into it, isn't that right? :)
