It's funny seeing this thread - I've been rewatching B5 this week to keep me occupied until ME2 comes out, since they have a similar 'feel' to them. There are certain obvious similarities, but it's definitely not something as tangible as that which has them associated in my mind.

Babylon 5 is a Space Opera. Mass Effect is a Space Opera. All Space Opera have things in common with each other. I doubt it's B5 specifically that ME takes a lot of inspiration from.

I think "Mordin" is a reference to "Morden" from Babylon , though.

The similarities are indeed pretty common sci-fi tropes. Still, one thing I hope ME2 will be able to do, thanks to bringing story choices in from the first game, is raise the bar for the strength of story arcs as B5 did for TV.

I suspect there's at least one B5 fan among the writers, as I recall there being a shout-out or two. For instance, Anoleis has an Ivanova line about being "in the middle of nine things, all of them annoying."

yeh but mainly after jms refused
to tweak his concept to fit the star trek mold, he admitted as much in
a book he wrote years ago they basically wanted the space station idea
but not the rest so he toom his idea to warner bros who let him make a
pilot then the word came down that ds9 was being made and was similar
in concept but through the star trek mold.

The story's actually a bit more unfortunate than that. They didn't ask him to make B5 into a Star Trek; there was nothing to refuse. They expressed some interest in B5, then abruptly turned it down.

and they both have a character singing the same Gilbert and Sullivan song... its impossible that they havent borrowed from babylon 5, but i feel that the series had some great ideas and didnt get the publicity it deserved, tbh i'm glad that they took great ideas from B5 and worked them into ME2.

I'd love to see a comprehenseive list of definite references (not just loose parallels) eg. Morden - Mordin

I am glad I am not the only one to see the similarities. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended in somewhat the same fashion...

Also, as much as I like Liara, she is no Delenn..

The Collectors look like the Shadows on Z'Ha'Dum.

I just ran into someone named Delan (Delenn - but it was a dude).

Bioware also borrowed from Wheel of Time for DAO--Logain, Blight were two that come to mind.

I'd say it has more in common with Halo.

If it turns out in Mass Effect 3 that the [REDACTED] reason for doing what they are doing is to protect us from an even greater threat, I totally would not be surprised.

Mass Effect has borrowed heavily from a number of sources. It's not EXACTLY like anything, it's EXACTLY like everything.

I've noticed similarities with: Star Wars, The Dune Series, Cowboy Bebop, Firefly, Descent: Freespace, Sunshine...there's really not much end to it.

Not really, of course. But the similiarities are great enough that the comparision can be made. I haven't seen any other threads about this sort of comparision (although granted I didn't go past 10 pages or so...this forum moves so quickly!) so I am curious: Do any other fans of B5 see ME as sort of a surrogate B5 RPG?

I see some simularities but enough differences as well that it comes across as its own IP and not a direct rip off.

Now if angels start flying around the Citidel and saving us from falling to our deaths, well all bets off :)

I will humbly contribute to the list of similarities
Earth Alliance is newcomer in galactic comunity, but became quickly major player on the field. Recently fought (against superior enemny) in the war caused by misunderstanding. John J.Sheridan is a member of alliance military and well known war hero. He tragically died only to be brought back to life. Than he played crucial role in uniting galactic races againts ancient and dark enemy. He is using advanced starsip of cross-species design (later he has whole fleet). Hmmm...

Dark Star - club in both Citadel and B5
Asari eyes turnig black when they touch mind of other person - telepath Lyta Alexander
Scene with turian and his ceremonial dagger at customs - begining of episode 5 - The Parliament Of Dreams

I gues there are dedicated fans of B5 in Bioware. ;)
