I was curious if the combat roll that was displayed in the gameplay video would be the only manner of dodging attacks. I'm hoping that there will be some variation on this aspect as I can't imagine a Warrior in full plate combat rolling. Well, I can imagine it, I'm just wondering if there's going to be a variation. Of course, this is a game where anything is possible, but at the same time I think it would add to the immersion if different classes had different ways of avoiding attacks.

Also, I'm curious if there will be a "kick bash" for non-shield bearing protagonists. Staff bashing for Mages?

We don’t know how the dodge or roll will be implemented in the game so we will have to wait for developers to show us more combat.

I would imagine they may have a variety much like Mass Effect and Mass Effect multiplayer where diffent races had different types of dodges.

I didn't see any kicks, but there's certainly timed blocks for Warriors and rolls, although I don't know if they are class-restricted. I believe they will provide a lot more information about combat at E3 so we will have to wait and see.

Thanks for this. Having not played Mass Effect... much, I didn't know this. Still, are you referring to ME3?

During last PAX, the roll was an ability exclusive to warriors. It was a talent (with a cooldown I guess), and Allan once said that at the moment when you paused the game a small AoE popped out to direct where the character goes with the roll (keep in mind that it could be completely changed now); the mages got a type of short-distance teleoperatori ability (Vivienne used). Don't know what rogues have, or how much things changed since PAX.
It's interesting to note that the rogues seems to use the chain/hook the warriors have in a different manner. The warriors used it to get the enemy closer, the rogues to get themselves closer to the enemy (that was shown on the last trailer).

ME3 MP. Based on your race/class the dodge is different or limited (i don't recall if it was even absent for some character).
In the SP the dodge is the same for every class Shepard can be.

I hope dodging isn't a key part of DA:I combat.

Yes ME3.  Humans have a roll, Asari have a dodge slide, Drell have a flip, Vorcha have kind of a low crouch slide.  Since BioWare seems to use animations in a variety of games they might have somethings like these.  Even ability they talked about of a chain toss and pull the opponent towards you sounds like 'lash' from ME.

Agreed, I hope it is something that a person can use if they wish but not be a must.  If I recall people commented on the Witcher 2 as if a dodge roll was imperative to having success.

This is something that has been on my mind for a while when judging the differences and advantages between playing in third person view and Tactical view. I can see some players who prefer Tactical view as their primary(possibly only) method of playing and getting upset if they feel that not precisely controlling the character(dodge rolling timed blocking which is all done in third person view) would be disadvantageous for them.

If I recall, Laidlaw stated that the roll was an ability that you have to unlock as (example) Taunt (there was a misunderstanding because he used the word 'purchase' and he had to clarify he meant the normal talent unlock system). I doubt it'll be fundamental if it's optional to unlock it.

Lets hope DAI dont become Witcher 2. CD Project stated that they fixed rolling lets hope Bioware dont have to say that for DA4.

If Dodge abilities haven't changed much, they're probably designed to be used to evade high-power Area-of-Effect attacks. I doubt they're turning it into Dark Souls "Dodge or Die" style combat, where you roll more often than you attack.

That might also depend on Class.. I could see Rogues having a very short cooldown dodge ability, allowing them to mitigate damage, albiet at a higher skill ceiling than other classes. Warrior is meant to shrug off all but the most devastating attacks, Mage's probably get the short-end of the stick, low durability and a high-cooldown evasive action.

That's just my theory based on the hearsay so far though.

I could've sworn I read that they said the combat roll is an ability like the rogue's "evade" was so it is on a cooldown

AHHH! Now this is what I like to hear. What got me thinking of this is another game I played (read: am playing). Out of respect for this thread and this community I won't mention it's name, but suffice it to say that players with magical abilities are able to teleport out of harm's way and/or through an enemy (in some cases with a lingering effect). That mages could possibly have this ability in DA:I is definitely a plus.

This is true, but from what I understood there were those who hated it too. Put me in that category.

Dodge roll in a party-RPG... let me just sigh and groan in silence.
