This month's challenge is "Technomancy":

Where magic and machine meet, such as Mystaran Blackmoor, Warhammer40k, Spelljammer, Sons of Ether, Wizardry CRPG Series, Rifts Atlantis, Final Fantasy Series (esp later games)

This theme was suggested by Carcerian.

Guidelines:

  • It must be fully working in game.
  • Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine.  Just remember that NWN textures must have dimensions in powers of 2 (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.).
  • Teamwork is welcome.
  • Beginners most welcome. Don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!
  • "Custom Content" includes many sorts of things: models, scripts, prefabs (areas, items, creatures, conversations, quests, etc.), sounds, portraits, or anything else new for the game.
  • All submissions must be finished, working, and emailed to NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com (or a non-Vault link provided) by June 1st, 2014. Sooner than that is perfectly fine too. ;-)

Somethings you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:

  • 2da lines needed.
  • Screenshot from in game for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie). Formats: .bmp, .jpg, .png, or .tga
  • Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie. Placeables and monsters should include a portrait.
  • Inventory icons (if needed) of your new goodie.
  • Any credits you would like listed.
  • If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).
  • Also if you would like an invite to the CC Makers group, send Rolo Kipp a friend invite. The group is nothing spectacular, mostly just documentation on 2da lines.
  • If you are doing tileset content, *please* let me know ahead of time so I can get you the set and itp files to work with. I'm horrible at merging those so this bit you will need to provide.

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity, and surprise!

This thread is for all sorts of discussion about this month's theme: ideas for things to make, questions/concerns, announcement of what you intend to make, screenshots of work in progress and/or finished projects.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or wish to submit ideas/themes for future monthly Challenges, please post in its thread here.
When submitting a new theme, please provide a title and short summary of the theme.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can:

Submit theme suggestions.
Vote for June's theme.
Email content to: NWNCCCMakers@gmail.com

Would some of these be appropriate? Like the magitech charging station? Or is it too sci-fi?

<necroposting...>

Cestus will be renewing his acquaintance with the Necromancer... probably the only recurring NPC/DM that gives him the willies ;-)

In Terran terms, you might consider the Necromancer a cyborg. You'd be a little off the mark, as, by the time of the Fall of Man and the Plaque of Demons (his origin), the Pyrellian Empire had combined Tek nol Gi with the arcane to such an extent (following the Fall) that they did very nearly destroy the world. Hence Tek is an abomination to this current era. (Edit: On Amethyst, those filthy little tekkies make their flashlights and tasers in dank cellars behind hidden doors wired to banks of earthen vessels filled with acid)

But the Necromancer endures.

  • Cestus will certainly craft the Necromancer's Wards (rather protective/possessive Tek ioun stones... sorta). (Think of them as a metallo-plasmic multi-body swarm artifact ;-) <he means familiar>
  • Perhaps he'll get to a Battle Troll (who are as much like normal trolls as Musashi was like George of the Jungle - same species, whole different order of mayhem, er, *intentional* mayhem).

Edit: The Necromancer (Taker, Harvester of Souls, etc, etc, ad naseum) is also the second oldest mortal creature on Amethyst. He is older than Rolo (who doesn't count as mortal anymore) by a couple centuries.

@ rjshae: I think some of those have potential :-)

As you pointed out, though, some are very sci-fi (don't really have an arcane element, just fancy versions of Big 5 hardware :-P ), but if you can give it an arcane twist, go for it!

My opinion, of course :-)

I do not reflect the view of the establishment.

Establishments.

Well, anyone, really. <he broke his magic 'goodolboy' mirror *raven snicker*>

Okay, so maybe a wand charging station with a weird techie look, crystal power source, and an arcane wand in the holder. Thanks.

<getting his...>

Prototyping the Tek Ward (with monster nodes, btw ;-)

(Edit: It's "looking at" my nimble assistant)

This will be an effects-heavy creature, with at least 5 emitters planned.

On the other hand, the mesh is pretty simple (except for the... well... let's have at least a *little* surprise, shall we? ;-)

TekWard_001.png

The iron golem is a stand-in for the Necromancer, who's about that size, depending on accessories...

(Edit: Ok, back to finishing the Orcs... I haven't forgotten, just had to get this started :-P )

And Warhammer 40K Tech Priests invade NWN. FOR THE EMPEROR!

Although a great look, I would HIGHLY avoid adding anything that remotely resembles Games Workshop IP. They are infamous for defending their material like a rabid dog, even going so far as to trademark common names like "space marine," and shutting down anything that doesn't feed their coffers and which they do not directly control. Over the years their hit list has included fan sites that had summaries of background lore, wikis with the rules broken down, and anything that remotely resembled their IP.

Personally, I love GW but their legal department - aka Norman Bates - is PSYCHO.

I always loved this staff from the movie Nine (animated, not musical). It's a really simple mix of technology and would be an option for the TOP of any quarterstaff or mage staff. Various coloured light bulbs could be added to match with the colour options of the light source given off.

A possible idea for a creature. I'm thinking of you, Mr. Plush! :D

I'm going to make a chilled heavy crossbow, where the bolt sits on a piece of para-elemental ice to be chilled before being fired (weapon model and prefab w/unlimited cold ammo).

Thought I'd start fairly simple, so here's an ectoplasmic containment vessel shown in NWN2 ('cause I haven't quite worked out how to port it yet)...

I think so, but I'm prejudiced... I like almost everything :-) <wait...what?>

I said I liked... <yeah, got that part, it was the oxymoron that threw me>

You do know how to hand those compliments out... <with the left wing, I know, boss. that one was old when we were young>

You could still let me finish...<...your sentences? why would i do that?>

*sound of teeth grinding* <*raven snicker*>

I'm quite happy... <...>

Aren't you going to finish for me? <can't expect me to do *all* the work around here>

*sound of teeth grinding*

I'd be quite happy if... <the dwarf does most of it>

Silence, bird! <right. that'll happen>

*visibly gathers the shreds of his temper*

I'd be quite happy if someone felt like working on a couple custom spells based off the beholders for this. I'm putting in the monster nodes, but not sure how to write a spell that *uses* the bloody things :-P <you promised me snails>

Is that what this is all about? <a year ago>

Right. I'll get right on that. <*rainbow* snails, from the bay of stones>

Got it. <*big* ones>

Yup <i hid your pipe>

Villain! <*flaps frantically out of reach*>

Witch! *Crow!* <big ones, on ice, please>

I'm doomed. <long long ago>

The good news is I've got the lightning connection with the shards...

The bad news is the emitter is emitting an absolutely fixed size of lightning that totally ignores size changes...

TekWard_018.jpg

...which really sucks for the 'deploy' and 'retrieve' anims :-(

Solved: To fake lightning (since I couldn't get either lightning nor explosion type emitters to work on a creature), I used a fountain with random cels of the fxpa_lightning2 sprite atlas. The problem was two-fold; aligning the long axis with the models and sizing it using the size x and size y parms of the emitter.

The short version: Use "Billboard to local z". Anything else will bounce bricks :-P

TekWard_019.jpg

TekWard_020.jpg

(Emitter count: 9 and rising ;-)

Now I can start animating it.

Anyone interested in writing a spell or two for those monster nodes? Something electrical or plasmic?

You'ld need a MDB (NWN2 3d format) plugin to import it in your 3d modeling program; like "3ds Max MDB ImporterExporter" or "Blender MDB ImportExport Plugin".

Also you would need a MDL (NWN1 3d format) plugin, to export it, like neverblender or NWMax.

Yo have to be careful because NWN2 models are complex and have many faces. NWN1 engine can't manage the shadows of complex geometries. So you would have to remove shadows from your model. reducing the number of faces from your model by your own, or create a liked simple version of your model, just for shadows....

Thanks. It has just over 900 faces, so hopefully it's not too bad. But I can always decimate it if necessary.

I think the Crone had about 5,000 faces...

Somehow I don't think you'll need to decimate :-)

Might need some skull-trickery with the glass and viscous fluid inside... ;-)

Something like what I did on the Homonculus Bottle?

Gah. Well I hadn't planned anything too fancy with the goo. I do have the specularity turned up to 80%, but it's not showing up much, alas. I wanted a shiny glass look, but perhaps I need to burn it into the texture?

Nah :-)
We'll help you get it sorted.
Make the glass mesh a separate element of the model and make the cylinder of goo a separate placeable model with an interesting goo texture :-) put a plain white texture with about 20% alpha channel on it on the glass.

I'll walk you through the rest when I'm not on this tiny phone :-P

First I'll need to modify the export script so I can activate the 8-bit alpha on individual parts. Be back when its ready...

Seeing the topic of this challenge, I can't resist pitching in a little bit. I am currently working on some magical tech-wings, they are still in a rather primitive stage. I will post images when they are more finished.

It's time for me to take a little break, but I got the techno-magic wings to a suitable state for displaying here. Still highly unfinished. They look Tronesque, just a tad, but I promise that won't last once I jump to work again.

cTbSTMe.jpg

I am considering adding some crystals, runic symbols, or just some shiny emitters in place of the glowy bits you see. My plan is just to give it a much more techno-magic look, and not just techy.  Hope you like what becomes of it so far.
