So I'm pretty sure we had a thread in the old group with book recommendations. Anyway, I'm starting to catch up on my backlog of books, and I really need some new ones for the pile.

And of course I'm sure others might like some recommendations too.

For me, I love Sarah Waters and read all her books, so if you're familiar with her, something along the same lines would be great.

Like Fingersmith, The Nightwatch, and The Little Stranger. I didn't like Affinity.

Anybody got any good stuff? If you recommend a romance, make sure to say if it's sappy. I'm not interested in it. Romance with an actual plot aside from the romance is best, imo :P

Books from games are good too.

So if anybody here still reads, then what y'all got?

I am more of a classics reader these days, and my favorite book (incumbent) is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, and yes I realize I sound like a school boy but there it is

I know some people really dislike Dickensian work but I think my defense for it is that pious ideas such as repentance and contrition are humanized through characters' portrayal. I think schools are jumping a gun a bit when they push this novel to kids because it dwells on very mature themes, themes of which school goers may not appreciate fully... a little too ambitious indeed

I have finished reading George Orwell's 1984 recently, and am reading Plato's The Republic at the moment, but find it hard to continue on

@Ash: Great Expectations has romantic elements

I read Great Expectations in school and I actually liked it, but I had and older sibling who loved it and played it up. I think I was one of three or four in my class who did. It was freshman year and I agree it's too soon.

I'm gonna put it in the pile. I'd love to read it again.

Hmmm, how's 1984?

I'm reading Ursula Le Guin right now, 'Rocannon's World'. Going to read the whole 'Hainish cycle'.

It's good, she has beautiful and unique worlds. I'd recommend it, along with the 'Earthsea series'.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel, some people think the Hunger Games series bares resemblance to it, and I agree to some extent. It is a famous and an important work for Orwell. I think a lot of pop cultural references were made from this novel... I would like to see the movie adaptation of it as well

Ah, I am glad you liked Great Expectations, I put it off for years before resuming reading it, and I am so glad I picked it up again

Not a fan of the Hunger Games myself.

Other books I read recently that y'all might like are Ghosts of Ascalon and Destiny's Edge. Both are based on Guild Wars2, but Ghosts of Ascalon is a good book by itself. Lots of adventure, very fun. Destiny's Edge is really just flavor for the game.

Another is If You Follow Me by Malena Watrous. I liked it a lot for the most part. Kinda of romance though.
