From favorite to least favorite (story-wise, not gameplay-wise), what would be your order in me3?

Just to completely de-rail the thread, gameplay wise I am loving the Tali/Ash combo in ME1. Murders everything.

Exactly in this order, of favorite to least favorite:
Love and Adore Like Dislike Despise
|---------------------------||------------------------------------------------------------------------||--------------------------------------------||---------------------------|
Miranda, Javik, Mordin Legion, James, Thane, Samara, Zaeed, Jacob, Grunt, Wrex Kaidan, Kasumi, Garrus, Jack, Morinth EDI, Liara, Tali, Ashley
I suppose that if we're adding temporary squadmates throughout the trilogy (not including temporary squadmates in one game who are full in another):
Again, ordered favorite to least favorite.
Aria, Anderson, Jenkins, Kenson, Wilson, Nyreen
I'm not a terribly huge fan of any of the temporary squadmates. I really only ranked them on how they perform their part, and how I like them in the story. Aria is the best because she's by far the longest temporary squadmate with the most amount of narrative importance, as well as her role outside the playable parts she's in. Anderson isn't appealing to me. I didn't like the forced father-figure stuff, and the forced moments at the end of ME3. But he did serve a narrative purpose. Jenkins I suspect is here for how much I dislike the other characters. He's an eager, earnest soldier, and he doesn't die out of stupidity or lunacy like most others. He dies following his orders and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kenson had some value, but her utility as a squadmate is terribly limited. Otherwise, she's a forgettable character that gets a dull surprise in being indoctrinated. Wilson is a traitorous moron; after a few seconds of conversation, I could tell he was definitely setting up for something. He also came off as bitter and resentful in his logs, and that definitely told me that, aside from pre-characterizing Miranda as a severe ice queen focused on the job (and who's execution of Wilson validated), told the tale that he had a motivation to be resentful as well. Nyreen, despite her narrative role as being the opposite of Aria, is too much of naive, holier-than-thou idealist who rubs me the wrong way.
*edit*
You meant in ME3 alone:
Javik, James................................................. Kaidan........................................................................... Garrus.... EDI.......... Tali...... Liara, Ashley (I switched Tali with Liara for ME3.)
Really, there's only 2 squadmates I like in ME3, Javik and James. I tolerate Kaidan, and he can be a bit more insightful. The rest can die painfully. After breaking their spirit and motivation down to dust and watching them break as characters of course.

Garrus, Tali, Kaidan, EDI, Vega/Liara.
I don't really care for Vega or Liara, so I can't make up my mind which one should be last going by ME3 alone. Maybe I'll feel differently when I play a MaleShep through ME3, since most of the dialogue with Vega that I don't like is exclusive to FemShep (auto-flirt on the Citadel and the nickname "Lola", as opposed to "Loco" for MaleSheps which I think is awesome).
I can't count Javik since he's not in my game, but from what I've read about him, he'd probably be in the top 3.

Ignoring the Citadel DLC, in descending order, here's my list:
-James
-Garrus
-Kaidan
-EDI
-Ashley
-Javik
-Tali
-Liara
I'm with Massively here; I felt that the squadmate pickings in ME3 were rather slim; for me, James wins essentially by default (and also by virtue of his impressive tech skills). It's too bad because the list includes some characters who I had really liked in previous installments but who were either derailed with some questionable developments (EDI) or just plain given up on (Ashley).

Glad to see some James appreciation. I felt that his character was given a lot of unfair judgment.
Ditto. I thought he was going to be a bit of a holier than thou alliance jerkass, the male version of Ashley. He comes off as a bit thick-headed too, but he shows a lot of hidden depths as well as a character. Along with Javik, he's the only character worth a damn on the ME3 team squad. Which may as well be the ME1 squad minus Wrex.

Indeed. Sometimes I think it would have been a good idea if James, or a James-like character had been in Jacob's place in ME2; James' blue-collar perspective could have provided a more interesting contrast with the uppity Miranda, as opposed to Jacob's rather vanilla personality.

I've never seen how James was blue-collar. If that was the intent, it failed. Not that I mind. I'm very scathing and dismissive of 'blue-collar'.

Well, that was the explicit intention for the character according to "Art of the Mass Effect Universe" which came with the game if you pre-ordered it back in the day. Here's the original text:
"The idea for James Vega was to create a blue-collar military officer-a heavy-muscled tank of a man. We gave his armor more heft to imply that James is an unstoppable force. The team added a beard, scars and tattooes to make him standout from the other Alliance marines, notably Ash and Kaidan, who are both very clean-cut."
As for the whole business about being "scathing and dismissive" of all things blue collar, I have no doubt that pursuing that would degenerate into yet another "I don't like civilians and think they're better off dead" debate, so I'll leave that alone.

I know, I own the Artbook. I'm just saying that he didn't come off as Blue-collar.
And it's just my opinion on the simplistic, repetitive, and rather un-intellectual (and anti-intellectual) ideologies of said people. I'm an elitist, intellectual bastard. I like being uppity and sophisticated.

Story wise? Hmm, well sorry Liara (<-- #1 easily gameplay wise).
Javik: For many of the same reasons as other people will state or have stated. Well written and an interesting character, with probably some of the most memorable lines in the game.
Kaidan: A lot of this is bias from him being my #1 FemShep paramour but I've always appreciated his insight. Shame though his Renegade version doesn't transfer over.
*EDI: I find her content great except for her sexbot body and I her relationship with Joker was a missed opportunity (which pretty much encompasses all my major frustration with the character in ME3, which are major enough to warrant the asterisk). Otherwise, she is one of the few characters who actually gets an arc, so that's something. And she did find a good use for Joker's porn collection.
*James: I really like his character, although I do find his role (though no fault of the character) of explaining things for the new kids to get grating after a while, which sours bringing him on missions.
Tali: I wish I had more of the little Quarian. I think she's at her best in ME3, or at least for me. Still don't know why she's on the ship though.
Garrus: I still like him as the token Turian. However, I've never felt like we were close friends as it still feels like Shepard is some sort of mentor dealing with the same issues that have appeared over the last two games. I feel like his coach who has to give the same pep talk each and every game.
Liara: I just find her uninteresting because her character changes so greatly and so erratically between games. I never liked her progression to a simple information broker, so I find her roll as the Shadow Broker sigh worthy. Fortunately, her interactions with Javik put her up on my list. I think they're the best content Liara has gotten in a long time; so, hurray for Javik!
Ashley: She was one of my favorite characters back in ME1. Back then she was interesting. Unfortunately, her ME3 self doesn't progress past the shallowness of the Horizon encounter and the interesting bits about her were stripped away and replaced with quirks like her being a heavy drinker(?!?!?) and uncharacteristic make over. I wish I left her behind on Virmire more often, so I could live with the memory of awesome Ash, instead of whatever being replaced her. Even in the Citadel DLC I think they recognized how dull her character had become.
