Assuming just ME3 (because there was a similar thread in the ME1 and ME2 forums):

1. Garrus. What do you know, Garrus actually became really interesting.

2. James. Too many people never gave him a chance as a character. Which is too bad, because he is a very interesting and likeable character.

3. Wrex. I missed you, bud.

4. "Maya Brooks." A shame you were evil. (Note: I nearly put this number one. And considering that she and Wrex are 3 and 4 on this list, it shows you what I think about the rest of the squadmates as characters.)

5. Kaidan.

6. -

7. -

8. -

9. Ashley, Liara, Tali. Returning characters that never really improved (Tali, Liara), or seemingly ignored by the writers (poor Ashley).

10. Javik. I know he has legitimate reasons for being grouchy, but what a sourpuss.

11. Aria, Nyreen. Meh.

...

100. Go away, EDI.

Guess I'll do this one, too:

1. Aria

2. Liara

3. Garrus

4. Javik

5. Anderson

6. Ash/Kaiden

7. Tali

8. Vega

9. EDI (I like her, but I liked her more in ME2 than ME3)

Game-play: Garrus, James, Javik, Ash, Liara, Tali, EDI, Kaidan. Tali joins the squad too late to be placed any higher. Could say the same for the VS I guess, and by the time any of three join, I'm usually settled into what I like for missions. Ash gets bumped up the list a bit because really she's just interchangeable with Garrus. Liara places higher if I'm playing a biotic shep, but only early in the game. Later on after I'm in a good place with cooldowns I find she's redundant.

Role-play: Javik, Liara, James, Garrus, EDI, Tali, Kaidan, Ash. Really close to call here though; more like a four-way tie at the top. The VS' stubborn shep mistrust just bums me out so they get the bottom of the list, with Kaidan edging Ash out here. Again Tali joins the squad too late, but she'll place higher if she's LI.

For the Citadel DLC Wrex tops both lists because Wrex.

Out of all 3 games?

Legion

Tali

Garrus

Zaeed

Mordin

Javik

Thane

Wrex

Samara

Grunt

Jack

EDI

Kaiden

Liara

Kasumi

James

Ashley

Jacob

Miranda

Mind you, I do like all of them.  Legion/Tali/Garrus are my three GOAT though definitely.  The back end of the list get a little more dull and uninteresting.  And Miranda I'm a little shaky on; while I do like her character she gets irritating at times.

And I'm not counting the jobbers like Jenkins and Wilson obviously.

1. Tali
2. Garrus

4. Mordin
5. Kaidan
6. Wrex
7. Grunt

The rest I'm rather indifferent about.

I use Tali/Liara or Garrus/James.  Of course there are situations that call for different combinations.

I occasionally use EDI, rarely use Ashley/Kaidan, and almost never use Javik.  His powers just don't work well with Engineer Shepard.

Outside of combat:

Tali/Garrus     -- My favorite squad mates throughout
James             -- I surprised even myself with this one
Javik               -- Alternate scenes are great
Liara               -- Probably be better if LI
EDI                  -- Liked her better in 2
Ashley/Kaidan -- Meh. Whiny. Prefer Ashley, voice easier to tolerate.

in order of personal preference

1) Kaidan

  2) Javik/Zaeed/Aria

  3) Miranda/Kasumi/Samara (very close 3rds)

  4) Grunt

  5) Mordin/Legion

  6) Jack (her constant bravado is tiresome)/Wrex

  7) Tali/Garrus

  8) Thane

  9) EDI/Nyreen (her goody two shoes shtick is VERY tiresome)

10) Liara/Vega/Jacob/Ashley (yep tied for last place - can't stand them equally)

I think I played through the vast majority of ME3 with Garrus and Liara. Tail got an occasional look in, but outside of the forced choices, that was about it.

Across the trilogy, the same is probably true, but Miranda particularly, and Samara to a lesser extent, both had major usage in ME2.

Garrus, Tali, Kaidan, EDI, Vega/Liara.

I don't really care for Vega or Liara, so I can't make up my mind which one should be last going by ME3 alone. Maybe I'll feel differently when I play a MaleShep through ME3, since most of the dialogue with Vega that I don't like is exclusive to FemShep (auto-flirt on the Citadel and the nickname "Lola", as opposed to "Loco" for MaleSheps which I think is awesome).

I can't count Javik since he's not in my game, but from what I've read about him, he'd probably be in the top 3.

I hate the way my female Shepard sounds around him, but it's even worse in the Citadel DLC. I was like really Shepard. Did they teach you any boundaries in the academy?

Are we talking about usefulness in combat, best mission dialogue, or both?

Well, judging by the way she speaks to Jacob in the previous game, the answer is "no."

In ME3...

Love: Kaidan, Garrus, Javik, Thane(even thought not a squad-mate anymore)

Like: James, Tali

Dislike: EDI, Liara, Aria, Nyreen

Utterly despise: Ashley (but thank god she dies in ME1). Still, this category needed something in it.

1. EDI (just like her... a lot.. except for camel...)

2. Kaidan (would be lower, but he's my m/m LI)

3. Liara (she does well for her role, but could be better)

4. Javik (I have some problems with him, but I can't see a MainShep playthrough without him)

5. James (not that interesting, but okay)

6. Garrus (I don't see the fuss about him)

7. Ashley (no problems with her, but nothing that outright attracts me)

8. Tali (I'll enjoy her story but little about her is very appealing)

I picked Synthesis the first time so I wouldn't lose EDI. Sucked it up and picked Destroy after.

I can't kill Kaidan.. he's my LI...

I bring Liara sometimes but she isn't 'go to'.

I bring Javik sometimes but he isn't my 'go to'.

I enjoy James but not enough to be invested in him.

I enjoy Garrus but not enough to be invested in him.

I let Ashley die on Virmire... but I don't hate her.

I can be slightly annoyed by Tali, but enjoy her story and role in team.. even though I'd be fine with letting her down on Rannoch in alternate Shep files.

ME2 ones that attract me more than most of the ME3 team: Samara, Legion, Thane, Kasumi

Ones I enjoy but don't get super invested in (aka 'ME3 level' of investment): Mordin, Miranda, Zaeed, Wrex

Ones I can do without, even if I like em: Jacob, Grunt, Jack, Morinth ... though I do truly like Jack

The auto-flirt on the Citadel that I mentioned was from the base game. It was even more annoying since my FemShep had already told him not to call her "Lola", so I was hoping the conversations would have stayed professional after that.

I don't have the Citadel DLC. What happens?

I thought he doesn't call you Lola anymore?? Where was the auto-Lola?

No auto-Lola, as far as I remember, but there was an auto-flirt during one of their conversations on the Citadel. Vega flirted and then FemShep flirted back no matter what dialogue option I chose.  :pinched:

Suffice to say, things can go a lot further in the DLC than they do in the main game. Luckily, it's not forced.

On the bright side, that's still preferable to at least one other 'one night fling' in the Citadel DLC.....
