Suffice to say, things can go a lot further in the DLC than they do in the main game. Luckily, it's not forced.

On the bright side, that's still preferable to at least one other 'one night fling' in the Citadel DLC.....

I've read that a fling with him is possible in the DLC (and varying opinions on the quality), but no auto-flirts?

And the other one is Javik, right? What leads up to that one?

1) Legion

2) Mordin

They get top two spots for the best conversations ever to take place in a video game, alongside Morpheus conversation in Deus Ex 1.

3) Tali

4) Garrus

For being adorable and awesome, in that order.

5) Kaidan

For being simply a cool, level-headed guy.

6) Thane

He gets ahead thanks to touching dialogue.

7) Liara

8) Wrex

Nuff said. From now on it's real close. It's not like I don't like Grunt or Samara, I do.

9) Jacob

10) Miranda

11) Jack

12) Ashley

13) Zaeed

14) Kasumi

15) Grunt

16) Samara

From memory, and it's been a while since I played it, the Javik thing comes right out of left field.

Blame it on the alcohol. It was all a dream.

So they were both drunk? Okay then. Are there options that lead up to this (certain dialogue choices, making Shep drink too much, etc.) or is it an automatic part of his Citadel content? I would hope it's not automatic, but with these games, sometimes you just can't see the ninjamance coming.

Again, from memory, Javik is only an option if you don't already have a LI.

Sounds like Shepard got depressed that she has no LI and had a few drinks too many.  :o Well, as long as it's not ninjamance...

I hope that ends up being one of the things he likes about this cycle, exactly like how Sten found cookies to be one of the few likable things about Ferelden..

It's sort of a ninjamance. I mean, you don't deliberately pick it.

But at the same time, the Citadel Party is pretty autodirected anyway. Whatever happens in it, happens. As Shepard, we only customize aspects of it. In the end, everyone parties hard, drinks up, and wakes up happily or with a hangover. The 'ninjamance' of Javik/James isn't SO important when put in that context, but can just be taken as the 'Citadel experience'.

Though I found the James part to be even more uncomfortable than with Javik, ensuring that my FemSheps will have a Kaidan/Liara/Thane/Garrus/maybeJacob/Samantha romance beforehand, just in case. Thanks Bioware.

ME3? Oh, I'll just do all. 2 picks per game: the first is the best gameplay wise, and the other is story-wise (or my preference :P)

ME1: Liara & Liara

ME2: Thane\Kasumi & Legion

ME3: Liara & EDI/Javik

Blergh. I guess an unattached femShep with enough alcohol has some kind of Collector fetish.

COMMENTS:

A lot of these rankings don't really reflect the depth to which I care about given characters. For example, in ME2 Mordin was awesome, but I liked pretty much everybody else in the squad to about the same extent. (Minor things, like the amount of companion dialogue in certain areas or the squadmates' general availability for missions, ended up accounting for the bulk of the ranking order.) Then after Kasumi or so, that approval dropped off a cliff. I really wasn't a fan of ME2 Zaeed and Jack.

Amount of content relevant to the character was also a factor. Ash and Kaidan were pretty high on my list in ME1 because they actually talked and had interesting characterizations. By comparison, the nonhuman squadmates in ME1 were relative latecomers and mostly served the purpose of being walking Codex entries rather than interesting characters. But in ME3, Ash had very little interesting content as a squadmate, whereas Team Dextro, by comparison, did have that content. (Yes, her romance helped change that. Fair enough. But if I need to take the romance line to get most of a companion's plot, that's a problem. Especially since it locks me out of stuff if I'm playing a Shepard that can't romance that companion. Jack's arc in ME2 was broadly similar.)

The rankings also don't really reflect the extent to which I brought characters along on missions. Gameplay was my primary focus, especially in ME2, due to the importance of cracking enemy protections on Insanity. So I'd almost never bring, say, Samara or Thane on a Blue Suns mission: they just weren't very useful compared to other squaddies. Despite his high ranking, Mordin only came out of the box for the Blood Pack and husk missions, which were few and far between. These sorts of things were somewhat mitigated in ME3, fortunately.

If these rankings do clearly demonstrate one thing, it is that I am a sucker for krogan.

EDIT: Subsequent post reminded me that I forgot Anderson. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Anyway, he's up there, but not particularly high up because he's barely there as a squadmate and because of "I was born in London". This was Hackett's game anyway.

All right, here's my rankings, just for ME2 and ME3, ME1 just needed someone with enough skill to open the damn boxes (although I liked Ash and Kaidan's Citadel sidequest banter)

ME2

-High Tier-

1.) Mordin - Absolutely hilarious, fun to listen to, fun to talk to, utter fantastic story

2.) Legion - Compelling character, really made me think

3.) Zaeed - He's just fun!

4.) Samara - Of all the characters, she's the most alien. I like that in sci-fi games

5.) Thane - He was cool, and his philosophy, although not as alien as Samara's was very different

6.) Kasumi - Very cute, bright, and bubbly. Everyone else was doom and gloom, and the contrast was helpful

-Mid Tier-

7.) Garrus - I liked him, but there wasn't enough of him. His story was interesting, though

8.) Miranda - She started out strong, but I wasn't as interested in her loyalty mission, and she kinda just fell into the background.

9.) Tali - The supporting cast in her story (the idiot Prazza, Veetor, and Kal'Reegar) carried it more than she did. But her romance dialogue did give her some depth, and her context in her loyalty mission was nice.

10.) Grunt - He was kinda fun to hear his childlike battle quotes, but I didn't care so much for the constant talk of krogan

11.) Wilson - Massively underutilized. I did want to know more about him.

12.) Jack - Violent thug with no real backstory outside of romance. The paragon interrupt to stop her from killing Aresh was the only real interesting thing.

13.) Kenson - Combined all the exposition fairy parts of Jacob in something I had to pay extra for. Fun to kill, though.

-Low Tier-

14.) Morinth - Sorry, but Samara made too much sense when she pointed out that Ardat-Yakshi can't be the destiny of the asari because they are sterile. Other than that, just blue vampire space babe

15.) Jacob - The interesting parts of his loyalty mission had nothing to do with him (Ronald Taylor was just someone you could love to hate and leaving him to the feral males was cathartic). Other than that, he was Navi without the blue wings.

16.) Liara - Some foisted blue (expletive redacted) I had to pretend to care about and be nice too. Why couldn't I kill her?

ME3 (not including Arena characters)

-High Tier-

1.) Garrus - Finally got the buddy aspect down

2.) Kaidan - Moved on past Horizon, had some utterly fantastic and sometimes heartbreaking(or warming) dialogue, but he dropped off after the second half of the game.

3.) Tali - I felt for her more, putting her on Rannoch gave her some much needed context

4.) James - He didn't do anything to aggravate me in the vanilla game (except for a little too much krogan worship), and ultimately, I thought he was a fun guy. Freddie Prinze did a good job.

5.) Anderson - I'm a self-confessed Keith David fanboy, but Anderson's character was very, very awesome.

-Mid Tier-

6.) EDI - Absolutely, positively loved her character development and interactions. Absolutely positively hated the sex bot aspect. It cancels, for the most part. If EDI needed a body, it should have been more like her personality: A rabbit that specialized in trollface

7.) Ashley - She had "some" interaction, that was good until it got ruined.

8.) Javik - Yelling and criticizing Liara is aces in my book, but the dialogue with him was too black and white. You either supported his "millions die" philosophy, or you were too ideal. Some middle ground would have been nice. Still, agreed with the "weak links hold us back" one

9.) Nyreen - Massively underutilized and her story read like a 12-year-old's xeno/FemSlash fanfic. But I liked the aspect of her being a soldier and discriminated because of her biotics. Now if only Garrus/Kaidan/Ashley got to talk to her about it

-Low Tier-

10.) Wrex - Character shilled, massively annoying, fake best friend who defies physics for the sake of creating someone unbelievable. If my party is going to rib on each other, don't stop to give Wrex tons of praise. Forced Big Good in a way that defies all culture reasoning. Fortunately, easy to kill off. Even better, the story is richer without him.

11.) Aria - Before I got to the base, I was screaming at my TV: "Shut the (expletive redacted) up, Aria!" And she didn't, throughout the whole thing. The first paid DLC I ever deleted, and she was the reason why

12.) Liara - Forced best friend, constantly coming up to my cabin, not actually my friend, never get a chance to kill her without dooming the galaxy. Don't even get the option to call her on the deranged stalker she is.

Honorable mention - Miranda is High tier in ME3.

Co-sign. Wrex was a lot higher on my list 'til ME3. I miss his ME1 (and 2) persona.

Just not a fan of his squeaky-clean character in ME3, and it's obvious why they made him that way.
