The means and the reasons are different but the end result is the same!  imo. Both are too weak to rely on there own strength so they resort to using something they know is dangerous, ending with them getting killed (while killing everyone in there path). I feel that red lyrium is very similar to blood magic in a sense that it makes the user very powerful while at the same time driving them mad in one form or  another and they eventually turn into an abomination or in the red templars case a giant behemoth. I mean are Red templars just non-mage blood mages?

Also if there is already a topic that talks about this "specifically" please provide link!  :D

I like your theory. Although I dont think blood magic necessarily drives the user mad. Of course if they consort with demons then the situation can go badly for them but I remember in DA2 Anders mentions to Merrill in a party banter asking if she just cut herself and realized the power. Leading to believe that not all blood mages necessarily have to learn it from demons or turn into abominations.

As for Red lyrium, it certainly does operate very similar to blood magic by granting the user powers beyond the normal limitations.

Red lyrium... Is more or less more corrupting than blood magic, I believe, at least. Red lyrium is an actual substance that messes with peoples' minds. Blood magic is a school of magic that's associated with demons and corruption. While some blood mages are crazy and self-destructive, blood magic isn't necessarily as problematic as red lyrium. But hey, they're both somewhat similar, I suppose.

Blood magic is dangerous because it is powerful, powerful magic tears the veil which is what allows demons to travel through into Thedas and possess things. In itself it does not corrupt, but power corrupts blah blah.

Red Lyrium is essentially toxic and has adverse effects on the body and mind, i would say red lyrium is more dangerous to the individual, blood magic can have more far reaching consiquences.

Which is more dangerouse/stupid? Who is to say, we haven't even played the game so until we do nobody can say which bad thing is more bad!

Red Templars seem a lot more dangerous to me than the common blood mage.  Just saying.

Well if you ignore the fact that blood mages can dominate a persons mind bending them to their will, and they can summon demons then yes there certainly are similarities that can be seen, such as how it enhances the users power and such.

But I think people are forgetting that mages could also use red lyrium to enhance their power, its not like it's exclusive to non-mages, if it is processed like regular lyrium then a mage would be able to use it. A mage using red lyrium would definitely be more of a threat than a templar using it.

Imagine a blood mage who also uses red lyrium, that would be a pretty big problem.

A blood mage using red lyrium would be a serious problem. Maybe one of the "agents of chaos" will be a blood mage that uses red lyrium!

Watching Meredith with the Red Lyrium pressed on her already hatred of mages after what her sister Amelia had done to her family and many others before being stopped.

Meredith - "I tried to have sympathy! Maker knows, I've tried! But how can we allow them freedom when so many would use it to commit atrocities? They control minds, they become abominations, they began the Blight itself!"

The Red Lyrium from that cursed idol fueled her and she siezed more power in the end the power of the red lyrium took her can Red Templars be far behind Meredith in this?

So are we going to see some more red lyrium induced mecha templars?

Both are bombs. One is just bigger and unstable.

Also, Blood Magic doesn't turn anyone eventually into an Abomination. It's just that most blood mages tend to use demons to do their dirty work and are often overpowered by them and turn into abominations. It's not a natural occurrence, just a frequent one.

I'd be more worried about red lyrium using blood mages. :P
