Not sure if this has been done before. I performed a little experiment using the Skydome placeable from the tiny Fake Exteriors tileset, and the result is shown below. In the left half is the normal dome with default lighting in an 8x8 area; at right I added a glow map. The result is interesting...

Unfortunately the glow map won't take a tint. But it seems that it should be possible to create a variety of outdoor-like sky views using different textures and glow maps.

P.S. The other two changes I made to the model was to reduce the specularity to zero and scale up the UV map to fit the full texture height.

This goes with the adobe double height room you just built.

Some one has done a large set of fake sky domes I believe. It might be Kamal or MGS. I will go and look tonight. I intended to anyways as i will need this pretty soon.

It was kamal_

His seem to be a collection of textures though and not a sky effect as you have done?

I made this sphere by Mokah's request for her mod.  It uses nothing but an illumination map, if I recall correctly.  Blank diffuse texture map, since it's unnecessary.

Hellfire made some custom skydome placeables. Basically the top half of a sphere, textured on the inside.

Very cool in combination.  I get a lot of mileage out of fake exteriors, and have used the variable terrains in the RWS deep cavern sets, combined with a slew of distorted/flattened placeables from the standard and OLM to create forest floors (ofc, Kamal's project makes this a lot easier).  I'd be a big and enthusiastic user of additional variable-terrain tilesets.

That's what got me thinking about it, just looking at that big ugly black sky.  ;)  There are several sky dome textures in the MotB material set that will work, although they are specialized. I also saw some while browsing with the NWExplorer, but now I can't find them. They may be too small though.

Are those available somewhere? I don't think they were ever posted, but I may be mistaken.

I don't know if he ever released them, but I know how they are made.

They are used in Wizards Apprentice 2 if you want to grab one.

Well this blows. I tried a skydome on an interior area with some tiles having an open roof. The game engine is projecting the dark regions of the area onto the skydome above:

I changed the dark areas to open tiles, but the same thing still happens.

I will try casting Summon Hellfire next time I see him in irc.

In this case, it may work best by just setting the Skydome Z scale to 0.001 and thus flattening it to a near plane. Just a suggestion...

Just doesn't work quite as often anymore.

Remember this? Well I tried an alternative approach where the skydome is a placed effect rather than a placeable. The idea is that shadows aren't supposed to be cast on visual effects. So I created an SEF of a dome model to which a sky glow map was applied.

Unfortunately, it fared no better:

...and that is the sound of air leaking out of my flotation device. This experiment has failed, alas.

Eguintir is right. Using tiles in exteriors makes this unnecessary, though it would still be easier if you could do it via interiors. Now where did I put that thread?
