Why do players complain about overpowered/strong weapons in a personal game?

Having one or two strong/overpowered weapons shouldn't be a bad thing in a personal game. I can see if you were playing a multiplayer online game, but offline one or two weapons or spells being strong should be a problem.

Simple. It ruins the game by taking away any challenge and making fights ridiculously easy. Most of us don't like playing as demigods.

I'd be careful about that "most". Many people play the game for the story rather than the combat, and others love feeling like all-powerful beings. Others want to roleplay more realistic fast-paced combat without lowering overall difficulty. In a related note, my sister played Sim 3 with cheats galore. I never understood why so I asked her why she didn't bother to be challenged. She said it's fun to just get to the point and build a mansion.

So I believe that those that buy weapons DLC know what they are doing and  want flashy overpowered gear. If you don't want it, don't buy it. I wouldn't ever buy them, but I know many that would.

---

In any case, I assume you are talking about the pre-order weapons? I don't know where I read it ( I think it was the Twitter thread), but Mr. Laidlaw said that the weapons aren't super-powered compared to "regular" gear. They just look flashier and dragon-themed. It's not like we're buying them anyway. They're just a pre-order bonus.

Yeah, I mean it makes it pointless having any other weapons which makes a part of the game a mute point, but in the end it boils down to being hard to not use them when we have them. It doesnt bother me at all that other people have them, but me having them does make me become a tad wistful whenever I get a good weapon of that type but why bother I have the best.

TBH my unfortunate love of axes pr much guarantees I never get to use the best weapon in the game, so this has never been much of an issue for me. Then again, I am a casual-difficulty player in part so I can keep my character and my companions decked in lore-appropriate gear.

Every time I start a new DA:O game, I begin with about 13 bonus items of various OP-ness. What I do, is delete them all and keep one that fits with the RP of the character. One OP item isn't going to make or break the game when you play on max difficulty with combat mods.

For example, when I played the Dwarf Commoner Thief playthrough, I kept the "High Regard of House Dace" necklace cause I pretended that I had stolen it from a rich noble. When I played the Human Noble Power-hungry playthrough, I kept the "Wicked Oath". When I played the Dalish Archer playthrough, I kept the "Sorrows of Arlathan" bow and only used it after I had finished the Dalish questline.

---

So basically, use them to your advantage in every aspect of the game, but don't go overboard. That applies to everything, really.

You could just destroy them and not be affected by them, if you think it's "ruining your experience". I mean it's not like you're forced to carry them.

As others have said if you have a choice to have a overpowered weapon or spell don't use it. There are plenty of players/fans who do like have access to power.

Part of what I'm paying for is a balanced game.  It shouldn't be my job to work out what is so powerful it'll spoil things

I think it has something to do with bragging rights to be honest. Can be tied to the idea of it being 'to easy' and ruining the balance of the game because it's there, but I tend to notice that some people complain about it because oh it's messing with the challenge of the game.

I can understand it in a multiplayer game, like how people where panicking about the weapons for Dark Souls 2, because that becomes rather pay to win like and the balance of the multiplayer duels was put into question, but even then that game has some massively impressive OP weapons and spells.

But in a single player it's a nonpoint and people will complain over anything that they think a game should and shouldn't have. If it doesn't feel good to a person to use OP weapons then don't hagger the people who do use it.

It also depends on what sort of OP weapon is being talked about. Perorder OP weapon? Well I have never seen a weapon from a preorder able to carry beyond maybe a level or two then becomes useless like any other loot one can find. One you find in game? Then it's apart of the game and was probably put there by the developers for people to find and use feeling the reward of their efforts to find it. After all, there will always be a 'final weapon' in a game no matter what that will more then likely have the highest stats in game, or is a bonus for finding it somewhere you probably aren't supposed to be at. There has to be a weapon like that, unless it's a RNG based weapon stat system. Then the RNG just loves you if you get an OP weapon with it.

-high five-

That rogue talent that let me dual-wield non-dagger one-handed weapons? Perfection. I got a beheading animation for the Sacred Ashes dragon and it was a beautiful sight to behold. -wipes away single dramatic tear-

Because self-labelled "hardcore gamers" base the worth of themselves and others entirely on their "l33t sk1llz", and they can't brag about completing a game if it's "too easy" or panders to the "casuals", aka "the cancer that is killing games".

I dont' really understand this either. I can't tell the difference between a "normal" weapon and an "OP" one. But i'm assuming OP weapons ruins some sort of strategy, though you'd think the people complaining about it would have looked up stats beforehand and planned accordingly.

Unbalanced content can damage the setting.  Why doesn't everyone use this insta-win spell?

No, "casuals" benefit from a well balanced game too.  Probably more, since they're less likely to go on the internet/do the math to learn which are the good weapons.

Well, I did that until I learned to edit items.

Well, they don't have to, the games show you the traits of equipment right on screen, and will even tell you which stats are raised and often by how much.

As long as the developers do not take the OP weapons into consideration when designing the combat encounters for normal play then it is fine. If the developers do take into account those OP weapons in the combat design for normal play then it does become a problem.  Normal play becomes different (harder) because of taking the OP weapons into consideration. That unbalances the stock game for everyone who chooses not to use the OP weapons..

I'm a Casual gamer as I work 48 to 56 hours a week I fit in the time to play my much loved games and then try and fit sleep in there somewhere that's why I stopped playing online game's the Hard core people were making it difficult can't always be there and geared for the raid that is scheduled, work must come first.

I myself like flashy cool looking weapons and I like Daggers and Bow's the best not so much the stats of the item if I can craft it and place runes in it and a cool looking gem to boost it's flashy look I'm all for it.

My problem is that the leveling scheme in a lot of games has the end result that you never feel more powerful than you are at the start. That's why I love things like Morrowind, where you can become powerful as hell - but there's always something stronger somewhere. Just not around every corner thanks to scaling HP bars, equipment, and so on.
