Anyone else find it strange that Dragon Age has gone down the "spellbook" road. I always play a mage and seeing a mage using a spellbook in the earlier gameplay looks really... underwhelming. It's so cheesy and definitely not suited to be something in Dragon Age.

It's like seeing mages ride broomsticks or using wands (There was even an Easter egg teasing this!). It doesn't fit well with how the game is meant to be portrayed, as a dark fantasy. It'll also make the mages look inexperienced and basic, I want my mage to stand out, not to be reading a book whenever he wants to cast a spell. So please Mike, Mark, David and the rest of you guys, reconsider this?

EDIT:I think the animation is what bugged me the most. Seeing it floating around is what makes it look out of place, If the mage were to hold it while casting the spell then I would be more for it rather than against.

Yeah it was one of the earlier trailers, as said in my post. Still though, the fact of seeing mages using it is ridiculous.

I agree. However the spell book makes a very neat alternate weapon. Like Warriors can have 1 handed and 2 handed weapons, mages should have a choice as well. Mages have a ton of utility and the ability to use one weapon to do many things, it's still cool to be able to switch it up!  However, I LOVE LOVE LOVED the battle-staff from DA2. It actually lets the mage feel like they are a part of the combat. Going into melee mode up close is so sick!!!

This is true. When I first noticed it, I thought it was out of place. Even though it's not my place to judge whether or not such things belong in this universe(Dragon Age I mean), they certainly felt weird. I think a lot of people agree with me when I say that a modern-style spell casting fits Dragon Age a lot better than the old cliche ones.

They should really continue with the style of DA 2 casting, that felt a lot more believable, for lack of a better word. Please don't bring back mages casting spells while chanting stuff "all dark entities come to me!".

I believe the book is simply an animation of the spell and not an actual item.

So mages using spellbooks means that it isn't a dark fantasy? Have you played Dragon Age: Origins because there were three things pre valiant in the circle tower, 1 was mages 2 fleshy disgusting stuff and 3 was books. I mean books were everywhere, I doubt you could go 10 feet without seeing another bookcase.
I would also like to point out that Vivienne does not use a spellbook so it's not as though you will be forced to.

It also seemed as though very little reading was done in the casting of a spell with the books it was more along the line of burning and tearing out pages. I would say that the spellbook root is very fitting to the Dragon Age universe as there has been several quests tied to doing spells that require you to read a book and/or scroll in order to complete a spell. Whether you like it or not is entirely your opinion and is perfectly valid but saying that it doesn't fit Dragon Age or that it makes Dragon Age any less of a dark fantasy without anything to substantiate the claim is a bit foolish.

I'm pretty sure it's for that particular enemy faction's mage. I quite liked it myself.

You use a wand in the mage origin of DAO. There are also various control rods.

Agreed. I want magical floating books as a weapon. Also slapping people with them would be hilarious.

Kind of off topic, but I always wanted to see more book use in fantasy games.. but more along the lines of more intense summonings and rituals. Average spells would be as we usually see them (via hand gestures), but it'd be cool when engaged in those more hardcore spells that require a lot of reading and chants, like you see in novels and movies. Not everything should be so game-y and button mashing. Magic is dramatic.

Look at you all. Like fat Dathrasi you feed, and feed, and complain only when your meal is interrupted.

Who's complaining? Not "all". Looks like opinions on this are split 50/50. :D

I HAVE played DAO, I'm criticizing about actually seeing a mage using them in combat is out of place, not the fact that mages could use books before battle or to learn new spells.

Yes, this is about combat though, seeing a mage using a wand in a cutscene or a spellbook doesn't matter as much as seeing them using it while trying to attack something.

It does feel like a bit of an out of place DnDism.  Though maybe it'll make sense in context.

That's not fair.  We complain all the time.

I'll take just about any periodic casting animation over what started happening in DAO.. especially in Awakening. It got to a point that the average build would stack so many sustains that it was an eyesore. Especially Arcane Warriors. Some of the warrior sustains were almost as annoying, like that one that does the thump/pulsing noise.
