...So your entire argument is that in the early trailer you saw an enemy use a book? Not even consistently, just one scene without knowing whats even going on? Weak.

This is such a shoddy argument that it makes puppies sad. And you don't want to make puppies sad.

i don't think it's cheesy, i think it's very DnD, which is where Dragon Age has it's roots.

This. I think it's fantastic. I prefer my RPG characters to have flaws, that is, to be powerful and well-versed, but not a 'spellslinger', rather someone who needs reference material like a spell book. I like to think there is so much magic in the world, how can one hold that much knowledge in one's head? I think the spell book animation is a great little nod to that.

DA2 was too 'pew pew' with spells for my tastes.

Really...? I thought it was pretty cool, it adds a bit of flair and realism. I mean maybe there are in fact spells that have verses that must be uttered in order to work, and if so that's just adding more complexity to the mage class IMO. I think the animation for it looks awesome, and I hope BW doesn't scrap this idea.

I wouldn't worry, I'm fairly certain that it was an enemy mage, from the Psycho Fanatics faction.

Though I wouldn't be opposed to the option of using a badass glowing fire book.

I think it takes away "realism." Does a mage really have time to focus on a book in the middle of combat? Doesn't he know the spells when he keeps casting them over and over? Why does he need to look them up in a book every time?

I would think they would have time, given they're ranged fighters in the first place and teammates help keep the enemy away, besides it's not like the mage is stopping and taking their time to read through the book then activating the spell. Have you seen the animation?  Also It's not like the book is for every magic spell, it's probably for the more powerful ones. I think the book would just be the equivalent of a spell that takes time to power up. Example: look at Origins, when Morrigan is about to shapeshift the spell takes time to charge, and in that time she's waving her hands in the air. Well instead of the mage waving their hands in the air like a moron, this time there will be a book animation.

I do believe this also adds realism, due to the fact there may be numerous amounts of spells and I'd doubt mages would try to memorize them all. Plus some spells may require a verbal rituals of some sort and I'd also doubt they'd memorize every verse of every single spell that has been created.

It's really hard to mix realism with mages when we can summon meteorites at high velocities onto our enemies, and then the fact that most would be able to survive that.

Pretty sure you can't summon meteorites in DA. Can you? But I get the spirit of your comment.

Well, it would be nice for a casting mage to have more options than the staff.

I like the floating spellbook. Also, if it has to be equipped as a weapon it should have +10000 damage vs giant spiders.

Perhaps there's a narrative reason for such things. Maybe mages outside ferelden are accustom to spellbooks or by using one it optimizes a mage's mana pool.

Agreed. I want magical floating books as a weapon. Also slapping people with them would be hilarious.

Like this. :P

I liked it. So here's a thought: if you didn't like it, don't use it. There nothing lost or changed for you. Removing it entirely changes nothing for you but quite a bit for those who want it. Kind of unfair no?

And in any case, we saw a single one second clip, we know NOTHING of it. Maybe it's not even a weapon at all.

Considering what was present in combat from DAO DA2 and some talents in the DAI PAX demo, I wouldn't say it's that worse. I don't really care one way or another though.

A fire spell in the PAX demo looked close enough.

The mages featured on Dragon Age class page are equipped with staves, not spellbooks. I don't think that sky is about to fall just yet.

I doubt that the mage PC and the mage companions will be able to equip books. I do think that some mage enemies will use that book animation.

Why do people see something they personally don't like and then ask that it be removed? Why not just not use it yourself? Plenty of gameplay footage with mages using a staff and not a spellbook.
