But what if the book was part of a spell? If it was a grimoire, it might have been filled with knowledge or very old forbidden magic or something like that, and the book was sacrificed to weave a very powerful spell.

Maybe it is just a different type of spellcasting altogether? Maybe circles of Magi are slightly different depending on region and this particular mage was raised in the Anderfels or in the North of Tevinter or wherever, where floating books are part of magic. Just because mages in Ferelden and the Free marches do not do it, doesn't mean that a small circle in Tevinter woulnd't use books.

We are missing context here. It might be it's supposed to be strange because the mage is weird. Who knows?

Its animation for a certain spell (or maybe a few spells. We'll see) & I think it looks really cool. It's not a big deal.

Oh, I think I get it. The "spellbook" was more like a talisman containing magical power granted from some unknown source.

Perhaps the power of whoever leads the Venatori is just so immense that he can portion it out to his followers.

Tevinter is known for good magic knowledge.
Also no one deserves anything.

Could also be someone from an unofficial Rivain. Or an apostate trained in Antiva. Who are we to know? There appear to be many types of magic all over Thedas.

There is only one type and it's called magic.

Magic might be magic, but some are powered by spirits, others by blood. Why not books? We only had a pretty small window into the world of Thedas and magic appears to be more complicated than we can currently judge.

How can the Inquisitor close Fade-portals if he is not a mage. Mages appear to be the only ones to be able to properly interact with the fade, while the average person is not aware of it while sleeping.

So why shouldn't it be possible for some magic to use books, especially if it be might an uncommon spell?

Why stop at books? Lets power spells with towels, mugs, how about socks?

Having grimoires is not the same as casting with them. Of course there will be books filled with information and various spells in them , that doesn't mean mages should start chanting from them for power. Magic never worked like that in Dragon Age, no reason for it to start now.

In any case, Gaider did say that it is just one enemy type and that wasn't a spell book. I'm not too bothered by it, just saying that it would be lame to see the return of the "cliched use of magic" when they did a great job with the style from DA 2(one of the few things I liked in that game over Origins).

I wonder how many people there are like me who never drink potions in games unless they're absolutely required (as in, the only method of healing) because I find them analogous to drugs.

Made countless potions in Skyrim. Never drank one.

Never get high off your own supply?

Real life is not a video game; not exactly a fair comparison.

Very rarely. For common colds and aches, I just tough it out.

It probably has more to do with video game potions being along the lines of 'performance boosters.' Boosts your stats and all that. Magic steroids. Healing potions, I kind of tend to avoid since it's touch to imagine gulping down a potion in the middle of a fight.

Mmm. It might just come down to them making games a little too easy.

I don't see an real problem with it, seems more like a simple mage buff than anything and Mages do use Grimoires in the DA universe so no real issues. Seems like a pointless nit pick honestly, if anything you could simply not use it all

I just thought of something. What if that mage we saw using that book is unleashing a demon sealed within it?

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't one of the forgotten ones sealed in a book? There was a side quest in da2 where shades/demons will attack you if you destroyed thier books.

Forbidden Knowledge is the name of the quest. And yeah, it does lead to a forgotten one (Xebenkeck) being released from a book -- the Fell Grimoire.

If so, that wouldn't be a bad idea.
